NEW COURSE REQUEST Supporting Justification for On-Campus Review

Ginny Lewis 11/26/12 Request Originator Signature Date Ginny Lewis 11/26/12 Department Chair Signature Date School/College Dean Signature Date

1. Provide specific reasons for the proposal of this course and explain how the changes enhance the curriculum. The German major curriculum is being consolidated in conjunction with offering it in an online format. The current German major has a total of 4 composition and conversation courses out of the 8 upper-division courses required. In an effort to correct this imbalance toward language use over literature and culture, the redesigned major will require that students take 9 hours of “skills” courses, including GER 410 as a key option, and 12 hours spread over courses in the literature, civilization, and film of the German-speaking lands. These courses will feature various amounts of composition and conversation as instructional techniques to help students acquire the material. The new GER 410 course will give students an opportunity to pay focused attention to the pitfalls of German grammar that make communication difficult if left uncorrected at the advanced level. This dedication of an advanced course to the study of grammar falls in line with second language acquisition research, which indicates that a “focus on forms” is necessary in order for students to progress from the intermediate to the advanced level in language proficiency.1

2. Note whether this course is: Required X Elective

GER 410 will be one of the five courses that can be used to fulfill the “skills” requirement of the redesigned German major, of which three (9 hours) must be taken. 3. In addition to the major/program in which this course is offered, what other majors/programs will be affected by this course?

none

4. If this will be a dual listed course, indicate how the distinction between the two levels will be made. n/a

5. Desired section size 20-25

6. Provide qualifications of faculty who will teach this course. List name(s), rank(s), and degree(s). Ginny Lewis, Associate Professor of German, Ph.D. in Modern German Literature from the University of Pennsylvania (1989)

7. Note whether adequate facilities are available and list any special equipment that will be needed for the course.

10. If this course may be offered for variable credit, explain how the amount of credit at each offering is to be determined.

n/a 11. Add any additional comments that will aid in the evaluation of this request. GER 455 is being proposed in conjunction with the proposal to offer the B.A. degree in German in an online format. Because film has become a major vehicle for cultural expression in the modern era, it stands to reason that a dedicated course should figure in the German major to convey crucial information on this aesthetic medium.
