7. Explanation of the Change: The total credits required for the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree is 120 credits. Per BOR 2.5.13 policy this limits transferability of credits for community colleges and other institutions to USD to 60 credits. Transfer students must still earn a minimum of 30 credit hours from USD to graduate with the degree. This 30 credit requirement is easily met within the institutional and departmental requirements. Students additionally must complete non-departmental required courses which insures a robust liberal arts foundation.

However, the 60 credit transfer limit puts transfer students at a severe disadvantage to attend USD and they often go to another school that gives them credit for their previous education. The BOR 2.5.13 policy limit forces transfer students to take or repeat coursework. This is a huge barrier for USD admission, because it impedes a seamless transition to the degree and hinders marketability and growth of the as a degree completion program. This is a burden on the student causing the student to take on unnecessary debt.

Because of this problem we request consideration of waiving BOR Policy 2.5.13 for Health Sciences students seeking degree completion for the degree at USD and allowing junior and community college students transferring into USD’s program to bring in up to 90 credit hours toward their completion.

Graduates must meet regental, university, and departmental requirements regardless of the number of credits involved. The changes will also make the completion as equitable and seamless for a transfer student with an Associate Degree from a community college, or transfer student from another institution as it is for students who have completed one of the USD’s associate programs.

This is a request for a change in the name of the major. The Kinesiology & Sport Science division and major names were originally approved for fall 2011. In September 2015 we requested that the name of the current Division (Kinesiology & Sport Science) be changed to Kinesiology & Sport Management. This was initially approved at the April BOR meeting. It was the intent of the faculty that, similar to the current division and major name being the same, the new division and major name will be the same.

9. EXPLANATION OF THE CHANGE:

In today’s academic environment, curricular programs have both external as well as internal competitors.

From a marketing standpoint, we believe this name change from Kinesiology & Sport Science to Kinesiology & Sport Management will assist future students in recognizing the existence of the current Sport Management concentration. In addition, the faculty believes that re-branding our division will strengthen the academic program we offer to our current stakeholders.

This is a change to the KSS core. Two years ago, after a meeting with representatives from the USD administration, USD athletic department, Division of KSS, Faculty Athletic Representative and USD athletic academic advisors, it was decided to make KSS 494-Internship a variable 1-12 credits. This modification is to update the current program of study.

Explanation of the Change: The total credits required for the Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) degree is 120 credits. Per BOR 2.5.13 policy this limits transferability of credits for community colleges and other institutions to USD to 60 credits. Transfer students must still earn a minimum of 33 credit hours from USD to graduate with the BSSW. This 30 credit requirement is easily met within the institutional and departmental requirements. Students additionally must complete non-departmental required courses which insures a robust liberal arts foundation.

However, the 60 credit transfer limit puts transfer students at a severe disadvantage to attend USD. The BOR 2.5.13 policy limit forces transfer students to take or repeat up to 20 credits of coursework (the difference between the 60 credit limit policy and the minimum 33 credits for the BSSW degree requirements). This is a

huge barrier for USD admission, because it impedes a seamless transition to the BSSW degree and hinders marketability and growth of the BSSW as a degree completion program.

Because of this problem I request consideration of waiving BOR Policy 2.5.13 for BSSW students seeking degree completion for the BSSW at USD and allowing junior, community college students transferring into USD’s BSSW program to bring in up to 90 credit hours toward their BSSW completion.

Rationale for Request

The rationale for waiver of BOR 2.5.13 is:

1. Currently, USD’s BSSW program is not able to provide the seamless transition because of BOR Policy 2.5.13; therefore impeding the marketability of the program and the social work department’s advanced standing MSW program. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at http://www.bls.gov/ooh/community-and-social-service/social-workers.htm “Employment of social workers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by increased demand for healthcare and social services, but will vary by specialty.”

Graduates must meet regental, university, and departmental requirements regardless of the number of credits involved. The changes will also make the BSSW completion as equitable and seamless for a transfer student with an Associate Degree from a community college, or transfer student from another institution as it is for students who have completed one of the USD’s associate program.
