Reminders of What’s NewChemistry Science Transfer Pre-Professional has been created to distinguish it from Chemisty Science Transfer. This was done to designate the program for students interested in Medicine, Dentistry, Physical Therapy or any other field requiring Biology. MAT 029 and MAT 031 were Enrichment Courses created for the 2009 Wintersession. These three credit-equivalent courses were for students who earned a "D" or better in their Precalculus or Calculus course. The grade earned in the enrichment course will replace the previously earned grade. The original grade will be expunged from the transcript. Both the original course and the enhancement course will appear on the student's transcript with the same grade for each course.

CHM 010 is now named Basic Chemistry for Health Technology students. CHM 020 is a higher level preparatory course for those students planning for the Science Transfer courses.ENG 122--Writing about Survival and ENG 253--Mythology in Literature are Honors Courses. CSI.AAS now requires CSC 161 and 162 in place of CSC 133 and 134. This is similar to the requirements for CSC.AS.

Some Common H“OOPS”

MAT 014 is a prerequisite for CHM 123 but not BIO 123.Students who receive the equivalent of MAT 014 from a different institution must still take the precalculus diagnostic test. Please remember the “contract” for combination Math classes.Only SPE 121 or a language course can be assigned to a RDG 009 student if she/he tested into ENG 121.PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE—Two 4-credit sciences for CJEmphasize CSC 106 over CSC 105.

If a student tested before 3/08 but never took a Math class at MCC, the gold grid is operative.Under no circumstances are we permitted to overload classes.Under no circumstances are we to evaluate other transcripts without corroboration from Admissions or the Registrar.Be aware of RDG/ENG/ MAT sections in the 50s (combinations). Please allow the student ambassadors in the lobby to assist students with finding sections. Please bookmark and utilize the Kean transfer guide for all EDPR majors.

NJ STARS Advising Guidelines

Most unsure new NJ STARS students should be in Liberal Arts. Changing majors multiple times will jeopardize graduation within the five semester limit.

Do your best to advise unsure first semester STARS students to take English, Western Civilization I, social science elective, foreign language & math.

For STARS students in career-programs (A.A.S. degrees) it is important to begin major courses in their first semester to ensure proper sequencing and graduation within five semesters. When in doubt speak with John, Terri or Don.

Interpreting Raw Scores for Proper Math Placement

Detail on the TSUM field in the SASM screen to verify an SAT score or to view a student’s raw math scores from the CPT (Basic Math/Algebra) or (Algebra/CLM). Refer to the math grid in the Manual for placement guidelines. It is critically important to read the grid carefully. Students will have raw scores in two levels of math. Be sure you are referring to the correction section of the gridThere are three sections to the grid:Algebra/ComputationAlgebra/College Level Math (CLM)SAT Math Scores

Math Advising Guidelines

Students with a score of 29 or lower in the computation section must register for MAT 010ABe aware of the “combination” math classes—MAT 009/013A; MAT 009/013; MAT 080/014; MAT 090/123; MAT 090/129A Remember that some majors have MAT 014 as a prerequisiteRecognize that MAT 010, 013, 014, 129 and 131 have two semester variations

Students may change to the “A” version of these math classes during the first four weeks of a semester

Consider transfer possibilities when discussing math classes & refer students to the Department of Counseling &Career Services in ED 100

Developmental Classes: An Overview

Developmental courses require at least a grade of “C”Students must include developmental classes in their schedule until they are completed.Students in developmental classes may register for no more than 15 credit/credit equivalents per semester. Appeals to exceed the 15 credit limit are heard by the Director and Assistant Director of Advising. In situations where a student cannot register for a developmental course (late in the enrollment cycle when a time or section may be unavailable), complete a Request for Registration Waiver Form. Developmental classes are credit-equivalent classes.Students must successfully complete RDG 011 before registering for ENG 122.

Developmental Classes: Guidelines

Students may place in to as many as seven developmental classes: RDG 009, RDG 011, ENG 009, ENG 010, MAT 010, MAT 013, and MAT 014.

Not all majors require MAT 014.Students in RDG 009 are not permitted to take any credit classes that semester except for the proper math, SSD 101, SPE 121 and an elementary language. Students in developmental math should be made aware of the two semester variations.

The Math Department urges advisors to alert students repeating MAT 013 to register for the MAT 013A option.

Depending on their major, students may need to take BIO 010 and/or CHM 010.

31
