(See suggestions in Lisa’s report on page 8. ) On a personal note, two weeks ago, my youngest daughter and her boyfriend got engaged. They have not set a date yet; I think they might hold off for a while to save up. I asked my daughter to look on Pinterest and choose wedding ring patterns and colors. It should be a busy year. For our November meeting, Lyn Mann will be speaking to us about incorporating borders in our quilts. Lyn’s workshop, the following Saturday, November 4 th , will be teaching us how to make her ‘Swirling Tulips’ quilt with a curved ruler. It looks like a great quilt and there are still some openings on the sign-up sheet. And for the workshop she is teaching how to make her quilt twirling tulips with a curved ruler! I t looked like a great quilt, I was very excited to make it but it looks like we don't have anybody who is taking it accept me! I hope more people can take it with me! Happy quilting, Shar Our Quilter’s Game Night at the October meeting made about $300, which is pretty good considering the small turnout. The best news is that we have enough fat quarters left over to do it again next year and we won’t need to cut too many more. It’s too soon to figure out how much we made from the restaurant fundraiser at Aroma. Stay tuned for more fundraising fun. Happy Sewing, Shar Taira President

President’s Report – Shar Taira

I want to thank each and every one of you who have helped make Christmas stockings, cancer bags, handbags, pillowcases, quilts, fat quarters, or anything else you have done to keep our guild going. 2nd Vice President– Upcoming Programs & Workshops – 2017-2018 (Subject to change)

Phyllis Campbell Lyn Mann – November Presenter and Workshop. We are excited to present one of California's most popular quilt teachers. Lyn Mann is known for her mystery quilts, innovative quilt classes and trunk shows. Lyn has taught at the International Quilt Festivals, other major shows, and on cruise ships. She is returning to Acacia Quilt Guild after a several years' absence. Lyn will be teaching us about improving our quilts with innovative borders. Her trunk show will feature lots of quilts with fabulous borders. We still need sign-ups for Lyn's class, “Head for the Borders” on Saturday, Nov. 4. Swirling Tulips is a beautiful design that can look very different depending on your fabric choices: modern with batiks or solids, retro with 30's prints. Background fabrics will make a big difference in the look of this beautiful quilt. Susan Green has been able to obtain the recommended ruler for us at the discount price of $15. The pattern is free to those taking the class (a savings of $9). Short on time? Make just two or three blocks for a table runner while learning the technique, then make a larger quilt later. The class will be from 9 to 4, but if you aren't making the larger size, you could leave earlier. But you might not want to leave early, since Lyn's classes are always fun.

Desiree Habicht – January Presenter. Coming up on January 4, 2018, Desiree Habicht, artist, fabric and pattern designer, and quilter will be our speaker. "Have You Ever Wondered How Fabrics Are Designed?" is the subject of Desiree's lecture. You may see some of her work at desireesdesigns.com, or go on Facebook and search for Desiree's Design Studios or on Pinterest where you can follow her fabric line, and her art work.

Desiree also designs embroidery machine software, stencils, teaches group painting parties, and so much more. I have known her for over 10 years, and have never met a more creative person. Bring your friends, whether they are quilters or not. This will be a fascinating evening as we learn how quilt fabric is designed and produced.

(Programs & Workshops, continued)

Phyllis Campbell – January Workshop. I will be teaching our January workshop on January 6, 2018, by inspiring you to use your stash of floral fabrics to make watercolor log cabin blocks.

Christmas Ornament Contest & Exchange. Start looking for ideas! Our annual Ornament Contest and Exchange will be at the General Meeting on December 7th. Everyone is encouraged to participate and bring up to three handmade ornaments to enter in the contest and exchange with each other.

Every ornament must be made by you. It can be made from fabric, crocheted, painted, or any medium you like. There are many ideas on Pinterest, many with tutorials. I have received crocheted, Zentangled, quilted, and more in previous exchanges. Magazines also have ornament ideas. For some ideas, take a look at: http://www.bhg.com/christmas/ornaments/easy-christmas-ornaments (Be sure to click the "next" buttons.) There are many more out there. Be Inspired!

WAYS AND MEANS Michelle Smith & Mary Ann West

Brown Bag at November General Meeting Bring your new or gently used items for our Brown Bag to our Nov. meeting no later than 5:30 p.m. If you’d prefer pick-up of brown bag items from your home prior to the Nov. meeting, call Michelle at 714-856-3480. “Blue Bonanza” is here! Our 3 month Treasure Chest fundraiser features over 30 fabrics and a “Handi-stitcher.” Tickets are 1 for $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. Drawing will be held in November. Did you know Santa’s coming to town and he’s bringing a Quilter’s Goodie Bag especially for Acacia? A special preview night starts in November so don’t miss out at your first opportunity to get tickets for this terrific fundraiser. Thank You!! Thanks to everyone for their support and participation at our October fundraisers: Fat Quarter Game Night and Aroma Italiano Café. Both were a great success and a lot of fun! Special thanks to all the “dealers” at the game night and to everyone who assisted with the cutting of fabric and donation of door prizes. Once again, Barbra Riley won the top door prize of one of MaryAnn West’s lap sized quilts. Ways and Means thanks Bev Tyler for her donation of an adult coloring book/ gel pen set and Phyllis Campbell for her artwork and quilting of the Thanksgiving wall hanging.

Philanthropy Lisa Sullivan, Philanthropy Chair

Thank you to everyone for your continued support of our Philanthropy projects. Please be sure to finish and bring in all pillowcases and stockings to the November General Meeting. We will continue to make these in 2018, however, so if you miss this deadline, never fear, we will put yours in for next year. Be sure you get a ticket for the drawing when you turn in sewn items. If you missed getting a ticket, please see me. We have some beautiful fat quarter bundles from our fellow member and quilt shop owner, Sue Green. On occasion, I also find a gift certificate or Something Else to give away too. Don’t Miss Out!! Lisa’s Ladies will meet on Tuesday, November 28th, 6PM to 8PM at Phyllis Victor’s home. Bring water, cutting mat, rotary cutter (check your blade), scissors, and a smile. We always need stocking stuffers for our Thomas House Kids. If you are not aware of Thomas House, please ask me and I will fill you in on this worthy project. You may also go online and read about their work with transitional living for families. On the next page you will see a list of suggestions for stocking stuffers. This list is just to spark some ideas. The largest group is the 5 to 8 year olds. The older kids (14-18 years) really prefer gift cards to Target and Starbucks. $5 increments work best. These ideas are based on past years; this year may be different, but we won’t know until much closer to the turn-in date.
