12:00 P.M. APPLE BOX DERBY Rainbow Road. A n apple box derby racer is much like a soapbox racer only we
aren't using the official wheels associated with the latter. This leaves open a cheaper, more varied shape and design conformation that enables everyone to build and compete. They can be made of wood, metal, f ibreglass or any other material that works. This year we have limited the steering so safety wil l be maximized. Specification sheets are available in businesses around town for anyone planning on building one. Racers need to conform to these specifications for the sake of safety, and on or prior to June 9th, the car can be registered and safety checked at Salt Spring Island Glass or R. & R. Rebuilders. For those who didn't experience the 1 st Annua l Apple Box Derby last year, we had twenty-six entrants, of which all the cars were very unique in design, and a thrill to watch as they free-wheeled, one at a time, down Rainbow Rd. from the cement plant.
Our biggest error was limiting the age of entrants to six to twelve year olds. This year's derby has been expanded to include the young at heart, and that in itself means an afternoon full of fun and excitement for all.
The age groups this year are as follows: 6-8 year olds (Flintstone Flyers) 9-12 year olds (Rainbow Roadrunners) 13-16 year olds ("Indian-apple-is" Pacers) 17-up (Dynamic Dipsticks)
There wi l l not be a hard luck trophy this year due to the rising optimism spreading around lately. We wish every racer the best of luck.
For information & registration contact Dennis Marshal l at 537-9298.
