S h e h a s b e e n b u l i m i c ,s u i c i d a l , a g o r a p h o b i c a n d s e l f - m u t i l a t i n g . Y e t , s h eo n l y r e c e n t l y was a b l e t o t e l l a n d b e b e l i e v e d a b o u tt h e s e x u a l a b u s e a n d h a s now s t a r t e d t h e r a p y . Whens h e was 3 0 a n d a b o u t t o g i v e b i r t h , s h e t o l d a d o c t o ra b o u t t h e a b u s e a n d h e r f e a r s . O v e r t h e y e a r s , we h a v e a l l l e a r n e d t h a t c h i l ds e x u a l a b u s e i s a much g r e a t e r p r o b l e m t h a n a n y o n eh a d i m a g i n e d . B r o w n m i l l e r l , R u s h 2 , M i l l e r 3 , B a s s 4 ,B u t l e r 3 , H e r m a n 6 , S g r o i 7 a n d c o u n t l e s s o t h e r s w r o t ea b o u t t h e p r o b l e m a n d women s t a r t e d c o m i n g f o r w a r dt o t a l k a b o u t t h e a b u s e t h e y h a d s u f f e r e d a t t h e h a n d so f m e n . T h i s w a s d i s p u t e d b y P o r t e r , C o l a o a n d M i t n i c kw h o , o n t h e b a s i s o f t h e i r w o r k , c o n c l u d e d t h a t t h er a t i o o f g i r l t o b o y v i c t i m s w a s much c l o s e r . T h e yi n d i c a t e d t h a t p e r h a p s 4 0 - 5 0 % o f v i c t i m s o f s e x u a la b u s e w e r e b o y s 8 . S i x t y - f i v e p e r c e n t o f t h e s u r v i v o r s who t r i e d t o t e l la t h e r a p i s t , d o c t o r , t e a c h e r o r o t h e r p r o f e s s i o n a l w e r en o t b e l i e v e d t h e f i r s t t i m e t h e y d i s c l o s e d . F e m a l e s e x u a l a b u s e s e e m s t ob e more o f a t a b o o b e c a u s e :

T h i s m y t h o f t h e b o y e n j o y i n g s ex w i t h o l d e r womeni s j u s t a s h a r m f u l a s t h e m y t h t h a t g i r l s ' a s k f o r s exf r o m o l d e r m a l e s ' .N o n e o f t h e women i n t h i s s t u d y f e l t t h a t t h e a b u s ewas i n a n y way b e n e f i c i a l , t h o u g h some h a v e s a i d t h a t

t h e a b u s e s o m e t i m e s f e l t g o o d . T h i s h a s c a u s e d themc o n s i d e r a b l e p a i n a n d c o n f u s i o n .Are women f o r c e d t o a b u s e by menI t i s o f t e n a s s u m e d t h a t , i f a f e m a l e h a s s e x u a l l ya b u s e d a c h i l d , i t must h a v e b e e n d o n e e i t h e r w i t ha m a l e p a r t n e r or u n d e r t h e i n f l u e n c e o f a m a l ep a r t n e r . Y e t , more t h a n t h r e e - q u a r t e r s o f t h e womena n d men s a y t h e y we re a b u s e d b y f e m a l e a b u s e r s a c t e da l o n e a n d o f t e n t h e r e was no man i n t h e f a m i l y a tt h a t t i m e . H o w e v e r , t h e n u m b e r o f cases i s s m a l l - 1 2 7p e o p l e . I t w o u l d b e w r o n g t o g e n e r a l i z e w i t h o u t properr e p r e s e n t a t i v e r e s e a r c h .Who a r e t h e a b u s e r sT h e women who were a b u s e d ( N = 9 5 ) r e p o r t e d t h a tt h e v a s t m a j o r i t y o f t h e i r a b u s e r s were r e l a t e d t o t h e m( 8 5 % ) . When a b u s e was p e r p e t r a t e d b y t w o a bu s e r si n t h e f a m i l y , t h e m o t h e r was a l m o s t a l w a y s i n v o l v e d( i n 100% o f d u a l f e m a l e a b u s e r s a n d 95% o f d u a lm a l e / f e m a l e a b u s e r s , t h e m o t h e r was one o f t h ea b u s e r s ) . The c o - p e r p e t r a t o r i n t h e s e cases was t h eg r a n d m o t h e r , a u n t , f a t h e r , s t e p f a t h e r o r b r o t h e r . Whena s i n g l e p e r p e t r a t o r was r e p o r t e d : 62% were m o t h e r s ,7% were g r a n d m o t h e r s ; 7% were s t e p m o t h e r s ; 13%were b a b y s i t t e r s ; a n d t h e r e m a i n i n g 11% were a u n t s ,s i s t e r s , t e a c h e r s a n d n u n s .T h e m a l e v i c t i m s ( N = 3 2 ) r e p o r t e d t h a t 91 % o ft h e i r a b u s e r s were r e l a t e d t o t h e m . When a s i n g l ep e r p e t r a t o r was r e p o r t e d ; 96% were m o t h e r s ; 4% weres t e p m o t h e r s . When two p e r p e t r a t o r s were r e p o r t e d ;

m o t h e r s w e r e a b u s e r s i n 45% o f t h e c a s e s , a l o n g w i t hs i s t e r s , g r a n d f a t h e r s , a n d o t h e r m a l e s ; 22% o f d u a la b u s e r s w e r e s t e p m o t h e r s ; a n d 33% w e r e b a b y s i t t e r sa n d f a m i l y f r i e n d s .C y c l e o f a b u s eT h e a b u s e d who a d m i t t e d s e x u a l l y a b u s i n g c h i l d r e nw e r e a m i n o r i t y i n t h e s t u d y .
