Substance abusers in the workplace significantly contribute to increased health care costs, disability insurance costs, absenteeism rates, employee theft, and accidents - as well as decreased productivity, product quality and employee morale. Though there is no exact figure, reports estimate that substance abuse is costing billions of dollars each year. How exactly does substance abusing employees cost their employers? Consider the following: employees who abuse drugs are less likely to show up to work on time or put in a productive day's work. Conversely, they are more likely to be absent from work without a legitimate reason, use their health care benefits, and file workers' compensation claims.  As many as 50 percent of all workers' compensation claims are related to the abuse of alcohol or drugs in the workplace. Drug users, as a group, use medical benefits at a rate 8 times higher than non-users. Substance abusing employees also are absent from work more often than their non-substance abusing co-workers, often resulting in increased workloads for co-workers and decreased employee morale. Performance here are many ways to measure workers' performance. These indicators can also help supervisors spot potential substance abuse problems early on. Is a certain employee's quality of work inconsistent? Is the employee's work pace slow, slower than usual, or sporadic? Does the employee have trouble concentrating on his work? Are there signs of fatigue? Other telling performance signs include increased mistakes, errors in  judgment, and a sudden inability to fulfill complex assignments or meet deadlines. Increased absenteeism or tardiness, both of which have a direct impact on the performance of the troubled employee and the co- workers who have to carry the extra workload, also could indicate that a substance abuse problem exists . Las personas que abusan de sustancias en el trabajo contribuyensignificativamente a incrementar los costos en salud, los índices deabsentismo, robo por parte de los empleados, accidentes así comoa disminución de la producción, calidad de los productos, moral deos empleados y los costos de seguros. Aunque no existe una cifraexacta, los reportes estiman que el abuso de sustancias en eltrabajo cuesta billones de dólares cada año.

¿Cómo exactamente los empleados con problemas de abuso desustancias les cuestan a sus jefes? Considere lo siguiente:empleados quienes abusan de drogas son menos propensos a llegaral trabajo a tiempo y de desarrollar un día productivo. Por lo

contrario, son más propensos a faltar al trabajo sin razón alguna,usan los beneficios del seguro de la compañía constantemente yarchivan los reclamos por compensación.

El 50% de todos los reclamos por compensación de los trabajadoresson relacionadas al abuso de alcohol y drogasen el sitio de trabajo.Los drogadictos, como un grupo, usan los beneficios médicos de lasempresas 8 veces más que sus compañeros, comúnmenteresultando esto en aumento de las cargas de trabajo en para losdemás compañeros y disminución de la moral.

DESEMPEÑO

Existen muchas maneras de medir el desempeño de los empleados.Esos indicadores también ayudan a los supervisores identificarposibles problemas de abuso de sustancias. ¿Es la calidad deltrabajo de un empleado inconsistente? ¿Es el ritmo de trabajo delempleado más lento que de costumbre, o esporádico? ¿Tiene elempleado problemas para concentrase en su trabajo? ¿Existensíntomas de fatiga?

Otro tipo de señal que determina el desempeño incluye elncremento en los errores cometidos por el empleado, errores deuicio, y inhabilidad repentina de completar una asignación complejao lograr fechas topes.

El creciente absentismo o retraso, el cual tiene un impacto directoen el desempeño de un trabajador con problemas y sus compañerosquienes tienen que soportar la carga de trabajo extra, tambiénpuede indicar que el problemas de abuso de sustancias existe. 

Otras señales en el desempeño del trabajo como consecuencia delabuso e sustancias pueden ser:

  Permisos por enfermedad excesivos. 

Frecuentemente deja el trabajo temprano. 

Comportamiento absentista (lunes, viernes, antes o después delos días feriados y luego de los días de pago)

  Tiempos de descansos muy largos. 

Uso excesivo del teléfono.

 Aspecto y Comportamiento

Los trabajadores que muestran un cambio repentino en sucomportamiento puede que traten de esconder un problema deabuso de sustancias tóxicas. Por ejemplo, irritabilidad, cambios deánimo, discusiones con los compañeros de trabajo oinsubordinación para con los supervisores son comportamientoscomunes entre las personas que abusan de estas sustancias.

Para los empleados con problemas de abuso de sustanciastóxicas, la apariencia personal puede perder importancia.Trabajadores problemáticos usualmente se presentarán al trabajoluciendo desarreglados, descuidados, sin afeitarse o vertidos de

manera inapropiada.

También puede que los gerentes o supervisores comiencen arecibir quejas de los clientes y otros empleados referentes a laactitud y calidad de trabajo del empleado con problemas de abusode sustancias tóxicas. Otras señales del comportamiento de unapersona con problemas de abuso de sustancias son:

•  Sueño.

•  Habla irregular.

•  Movimientos constantes y manos temblorosas.

•  Manos frías y sudorosas.

•  Pupilas dilatadas.

• 

Ojos rojos.•  Cambio de peso inusuales.

•  Olor a alcohol en su aliento.

•  Relaciones familiares deterioradas.

•  Pedir dinero prestado de los compañeros de trabajo.

•  Robar a la compañía y a los compañeros.

•  Pobre higiene personal.

•  Comportamiento violento, impaciencia y depresión.

•  Comportamiento emocional.

•  Habla excesiva.

Peligros a la Seguridad.

Los empleados con problemas de abuso de sustancias tóxicas noson empleados seguros. Dependiendo del tipo de trabajo querealicen, estos problemas pueden comenzar a manifestarse en losrecord de seguridad de los empleados. Este tipo de empleadosestarán involucrados en mayor número de accidentes que el restode los empleados, aunque no siempre sean los que salganheridos, algunos estudios dicen que la relación es 4 a 1. Algunosde estos empleados muestran descuido al trabajar con materialeso equipos potencialmente peligrosos. Otras signos del abuso desustancias pueden incluir:

  Comportamiento peligroso. 

 Aumento en la relación en accidentes laborales.  Daño a equipos o propiedad.
