ADU and ADSIC Signed a Master License Agreement to Use
Spatial Data for Three Years
Abu Dhabi University has signed a Master License Agreement (MLA) with Abu Dhabi Systems &
Information Centre (ADSIC) with the coordination of Dr. Rim Meziani, Associate Professor of
Architecture from the ADU side and Eng. Ahmed Al Messabi from the ADSIC side. The purpose
of this license is to use the spatial data being published in Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure
(AD-SDI) for a period of three years.
This license agreement will give access to spatial data, high-resolution aerial photos and Shape
files (GIS data), socio-economic and attributes data, etc., which are not publicly accessed through
the ADSIC portal. Some of these data are sensitive and/or confidential, which makes them
difficult to collect or purchase. Hence, this license agreement will facilitate the data collection and
the research tasks for our faculty and researchers. In addition, ADSIC encourages the beneficent
of this agreement to share their research outcomes and the edited data.
It is important to note that Abu Dhabi University being a Member Entity of the AD-SDI community
for many years has facilitated this license agreement. The other stakeholders of the AD-SDI
community are reputed universities such as, UAE University, Zayed University, Petroleum
Institute, MASDAR institute Sorbonne University, etc., governmental entities, companies, etc.,
such Abu Dhabi Municipality, Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Distribution
Company, Etisalat, etc. Furthermore, few years ago Abu Dhabi University had signed an MLA
with ADSIC in order to provide our faculty and students free licenses to use the Geographical
Information System software (GIS) and attend international and national GIS related
conferences, technical workshops and training sessions with no charge.
We congratulate ADU and ADSIC for this new agreement and hope for more collaboration in the
future.
Public Health Forum- An ADU/HAAD Initiative
Dr. Deena Elsori, Coordinator of the Public health program, and Dr. Aysha Al Dhaheri, Health Promotion Section Head at HAAD met recently to discuss the Public Health Forum initiative. Abu Dhabi University will host the Public Health forum that will be organized by the Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD), the regulator of the healthcare sector in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The forum aims to reinforce collaboration on all public health programs, initiatives and strategies for a healthier Abu Dhabi, and the target audience will be university students across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. In the forum, HAAD will discuss a number of its objectives, key priorities, and current initiatives related to public health. HAAD will also highlight pressing public health issues and strategies currently in place to address them. Cardiovascular risk factors will be featured heavily in the forum agenda as well as accidents and injuries as they are the second leading cause of death, Tobacco use and its harmful effect on health, the importance of detecting cancer early on, in addition to routine screening and vaccination programs available to people across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The event will take place in November and we are very much looking forward to this unique collaboration with the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi. The invitation will be open and free of charge to all of ADU students, Faculty and Staff.
Public Health Think Tank
The New York University Abu Dhabi Public Health Think Tank is a collaborative, interdisciplinary and locally engaged initiative, designed to catalyze public health innovation in and beyond the United Arab Emirates. At PHTT 2016, delegates will work in teams to devise interventions that aim to reduce the number of road traffic incidents in the UAE. Teams will be tasked with creating a public health intervention that they believe will contribute effectively towards reducing traffic incidents, ideally taking a holistic, feasible, economical, evidence-based, and locally oriented approach. Each team will be supported by a facilitator, and participants will partake in workshop and talks by leading public health experts prior to developing their interventions. The proposed intervention may take almost any form – perhaps a public health policy draft, a health education program, a computer program, or a public space. By the end of the two-day conference, each team must have devised an action plan for implementing their obesity intervention, and must be prepared to present their proposal to the delegation and panel of judges. The winning team will receive an award and may additionally have their proposal submitted to local public health authorities for official review. Tackling this massive public health issue will be an inter-university endeavor. The conference targets students from all higher education institutions in the UAE and seeks to improve the local awareness of ways of reducing traffic incidents and the participants’ ability to generate ideas and critically reflect on public health issues. Each team will be comprised of 4-6 students from different universities with complementary academic backgrounds and skillsets. The conference relies on active brainstorming and proposal-driven preparation sessions, along with public health seminars, skill-building workshops, and presentations of each team’s proposal.
The 2016 Public Health Think Tank conference aims to increase public health awareness in the UAE and to unite local university students in solving a problem of great societal importance.

students who submit high-potential research proposals to ORSP and demonstrate an excellent
academic record. Awarded students are asked to present their work in the Undergraduate
Student Research Competition that is held yearly.
The ORSP invited the faculty to participate in this research program by recruiting and supervising
their brightest students to engage in research. Faculty members can supervise up to two teams

My name is Bakr Talaat. I was a student in the Civil Engineering College-Abu Dhabi University
& an employee in ADU library as Reference & Research Assistant. I graduated from Abu
Dhabi University - Civil Engineering College in 2012. After that, I was the first ADU student to
join AECOM company which is one of the leading engineering consultants worldwide (No# 1
engineering design firm in the last 5 years).
I loved my time at Abu Dhabi University. I had wonderful teachers and I enjoyed my courses.
I’ve been invited back several times to attend Alumni events and it’s always great to see old
friends and new students. ADU has developed since I was there; it’s a fabulous learning
environment.
In 2012, I joined AECOM as a Graduate Infrastructure Engineer. During my first year, I was
elected to be the Chair for AECOM Graduates Engineers Community (Includes more than 85
graduates engineers). After one and a half years, I was promoted to Infrastructure Engineer
as I successfully delivered many infrastructure projects in GCC region such as Saadiyat Island
Infrastructure Development-Abu Dhabi, Al-Raha Beach Development-Abu Dhabi, Bawabat Al-
Sharq Development-Abu Dhabi, King Khaled Medical City-KSA, Lusial Expressway-Qatar, Al-
Madina Al-Shimalya-Bahrain, Al-Rumaila City-Iraq, Jabal Ali Wastewater treatment plant-
Dubai, Al-Ansab Treatment Plant-Oman……etc.
In 2015, my innovation design idea for Al-Raha Beach Development water quality was
selected as one of the extraordinary projects in the world for 2015 during Be Inspired Award
Ceremony in London, UK.
In 2016, AECOM awarded me “Impactus Award” 2016 (Technical Excellence Category) for
my innovation design for the project Al-Raha Beach Development.
After four years of success with AECOM Middle East, I have been transferred to AECOM UK
to work on the biggest infrastructure project in UK for the last 100 years which is called
Thames Tideway Tunnel (TTT). This project is a 25 km tunnel running mostly under the tidal
section of the River Thames through central London which will provide capture, storage and
conveyance of almost all the combined raw sewage and rainwater discharges that currently
overflow into the river.
“Lifelong Learning is a key success factor for any person looking for excellence”.
