“I’ve got an obsession with death, but I think it’s like a celebration of life rather than something morbid.” Damien Hirst

Authority is our belief that art can open new channels of communications between diverse nations, peoples and histories.”

This exhibition follows in the footsteps of Hirst’s major retrospective at Tate Modern in 2012, which became the most visited solo exhibition in the gallery’s history. And it didn’t matter that the last big showcase received mixed, if not more critical, reviews, because, for Hirst, it’s all about encouraging opinions.

He once told Reuters, “It’s always healthy to have both views - people love it, people hate it. I once said as long as they spell my name right I don’t mind.”

We’re sure that his instantly recognisable works, which, no doubt, most people are looking forward to seeing, will attract much attention, intrigue and wonder. We can’t wait to fly over to Doha and check out what is, undoubtedly, one of the biggest and most significant art happenings of the year. EXHIBITION: internationally renowned writer, critic and curator, Francesco Bonami. It forms part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture which celebrates and showcases the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK.GO: Fly to Doha with Gulf Air and catch the Relics at Al Riwaq Doha exhibition space from October 10, 2013 to January 22, 2014.

    DAMIEN HIRST

The GCC art scene is being treated with an upcoming ex-hibition. Doha has been buzz-ing with gallerists and artists, their collectors and curators for the past year but no show has been more highly anticipated than Relics, Damien Hirst’s first ever solo exhibition in the Middle East. The capital is finally ready to see the larg-est collection of Hirst’s work ever assembled, spanning over twenty-five years. Here’s why you should hop on a plane and go and check it out for yourself...

Art lovers and culture vultures get ready for a truly special exhibition as world-renowned British artist, Damien Hirst is heading to Doha with the largest showcase of his work ever to be assembled, ready to go on display.

He has been described as “one of the most influential artists of his generation” (Tate Modern) and it’s no secret that Damien Hirst has divided art lovers and critics alike with his interesting and intriguing work. Now, he’s ready to bring that debate to the GCC.

As part of the cultural projects initiated by the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) to promote and support local and international art, the Al Riwaq Doha exhibition space will house many of Hirst’s pieces, some well-known and others unseen, in this retrospective showcase titled ‘Relics’.

The British creative genius, who is also an avid collector of art himself, is famous for his artwork series of preserved dead animals as well as for selling his work at wallet-busting prices.

Hirst first came to public attention in London, in the late 80s, with his exhibition Freeze, displayed in an abandoned warehouse and showing his own work and that of his friends and fellow students at Goldsmiths College. He has since, in the quarter century since that momentous show, become one of most prominent artists in the world.

His countless series of now iconic work is commonly attributed with ushering in a new era for contemporary art. As part of the “Young British Artists”, he was a member of the most prominent group that dominated the contemporary scene back in the 90s.

So, it’s safe to say that this special exhibition is somewhat overdue. It will be the artist’s first solo show in the Middle East and all the art appreciators in the region will be happy to know that the display, which starts on October 10, will continue until January 2014.

The pieces selected for this showcase are taken from a cross-section of Hirst’s most important series. They include parts from the Spot Paintings and the Natural History series of animals preserved in formaldehyde, as well as what is by far the most exciting piece, for us, his famous diamond encrusted skull: ‘For the Love of God’ (2007).

‘Relics’ explains, “art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else … there isn’t anything else.” Hirst’s work investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the tensions and uncertainties at the heart of human experience.

Hirst claims that his work is a testament to his fascination with love, life, and death; he channels the different stages showing interaction of life with death and the decay of the human body. The introduction of such a series by the QMA is part of their cultural plan to foster appreciation of artistic practices and hence open the door for cultural dialogue.

It also aims to bring local and regional audiences to take part in debates and discussions about the arts and to challenge and recreate new perspectives and understanding.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani explains, “Underpinning the work of Qatar Museums

    24 HOURS IN VIETNAM

FACT was invited onboard Etihad Airways’ inaugural flight from Abu Dhabi to Ho Chi Minh City, a new route launched ahead of the airline turning a decade old. Here, Shabana Adam runs down the best of this unforgettable short trip and why you should consider a visit to one of Vietnam’s most fascinating cities...

7:00Kick start the day with a traditional Vietnamese breakfast in Market 39, at the InterContinental Saigon. Try Pho, the famous (and delicious) rice noodle soup with pieces of your chosen meat and lots of greens.

8:00Wander the bustling streets in the early a.m. to get a first-hand experience of the fresh- food culture here. Vendors sell fruit, veg, meat and fish!

10:00Haggle for a bargain in District 1’s Ben Thanh Market, with everything from traditional ornaments, souvenirs and Vietnamese silk on offer, spilling over a labyrinth of 3000 stalls.

12:00Settle for lunch at BO 33 MON, located on a lively street in Phu Nhuan. Run by two brothers the menu here serves up superb Vietnamese food inspired by their family roots – the fresh seafood spring rolls are super-tasty!

14:00Discover Vietnam’s rich and diverse past at the interesting and informative History Museum as well as the War Remnants Museum.

15:00Take a pit stop to people watch while enjoying a fresh fruit drink from a road-side vendor (the sugar cane juice is particularly yummy!).

16:00A fusion of exquisite architecture, go and be in awe of the Gothic-style Central Post Office and neo-Romanesque Notre Dame Cathedral, both worth a pic!

18:00Watch the sunset and city lights down by the River Saigon. Packed with street food outlets serving delicious BBQ goat’s meat and veggies.

20:00End your day with a four-hands massage in the holistic spa at the InterContinental Saigon. Hugely popular in Vietnam and Asia, two therapists work in harmony to provide the ultimate relaxation.

Getting Around TaxiTaxis run on the metre and are relatively cheap. Your hotel can call you a licensed cabbie and you can even agree on a set rate to have the same driver for the day.

On FootA true culture fix means setting off on foot around HCMC. All you need is some basic Vietnamese phrases and a sense of adventure to get you going.

VespaWant to whizz by city life? The roads of HCMC are packed with motorbikes, and one of the best (and exciting!) ways to explore the city is on a vespa tour, best booked before arrival.

PORSCHE HAVE GONE TO GREAT LENGTHS TO PRESENT THE MACAN AS ‘A GROWN UP 911’ RATHER THAN A ‘BABY CAYENNE’. SO, HOW SUCCESSFUL HAVE THEY BEEN IN THE DELIVERY? FACT HEADS OFF TO SCENIC RAS AL KHAIMAH IN THE UAE TO FIND OUT…

FROM THE OUTSIDE, there’s no mistaking where the Macan gets its DNA from, however Porsche try to present it. From a distance, many would mistake it for the Cayenne, and even up close they’re very similar. While the Macan is visibly smaller when the two are parked next to each other, the main tell is the one-piece ‘clam shell’ bonnet the Macan features. Interestingly, this is the biggest single piece of aluminium ever used in a car’s bodywork, according to Porsche.

The interior of the Macan is superb. Comfortable and cosy, it almost feels tailor made to the driver, with a figure-hugging sports seat holding you in place for fast cornering, and controls that are all literally

at your fingertips. It features the same large, raised centre console as the Cayenne and Panamera that makes you feel like you’re sitting in the cockpit of a jet, with all the Sport, Sport Plus and suspension settings conveniently featured.

The Macan is currently being offered in just two specifications, the Macan S, with a 340hp 3.0l V6 biturbo engine, and the Macan Turbo, with a 400hp 3.6l V6 biturbo. Both feature a permanent all-wheel-drive system, and Porsche’s superb and lightning-quick PDK double-clutch transmission comes standard on all models, which is something the Cayenne has never featured thus far.

The iphone 5s was finally unveiled. FACT sees if the handset

    lives up to the hype!

IPHONE 5S Apple’s ‘Make or Break’ Model is Finally Here...

The iPhone 5s is the long awaited progression from the much-loved iPhone

5, as well as being one half of Apple’s latest big reveal. For a long time, no other

brand could match Apple when it came to mobile devices (they really did start the smartphone revolution) but in recent years the competitors have started to play catch-up and have come pretty close to snatching

the title of best smartphone. So the big question was, could Apple

regain the smartphone throne with the iPhone 5s? There are some pretty cool new features, first being the colours. Apple have

banished the classic black and white models and replaced them with slate, silver and gold

that we’re sure will be very popular! Behind the appearance of the phone,

there are some great techie features with the most hyped being the fingerprint scanner.

The obvious advantage of this is safety, especially when using internet banking and

when buying apps, but it’s also insanely cool (if possibly a little unnecessary).

One of the biggest improvements has to be the A7 chip, which means the iPhone 5s will be twice as fast as its predecessor. You’ll see this technology at work mostly in apps and games, meaning your average internet trawling won’t benefit as much from the improvement.

Another exciting feature is the picture quality, which is set to be sharper and clearer due to the 8-megapixel camera combined with 1.5 micro pixels. Talk time has been raised from around 9 hours in the iPhone 5 to 10 in the iPhone 5s, a short increase only, possibly due to the small battery and handset size.

Big changes were expected from this new model in order for it to overtake Samsung’s Galaxy S4 and other Nokia and Sony handsets. And though there are a few exciting improvements we’re not sure that Apple did quite enough with the iPhone 5s, in fact the handset seems a little rushed and, in our opinion, is still lagging behind its rivals.

    MY MOUTH IS FULL www.mymouthisfull.com

What tips do you have for bloggers?

Be true to yourself. You can get inspired by other

blogs, but ultimately develop your own style and

your readers will keep coming back for more.

Don’t let statistics and number of posts be your

motivation to blog. Enjoy what you do instead.

What are some of the local hidden gems in the city?

A nice little gourmet shawarma shop called Shish

Shawarma, where the bread is baked fresh right

in front of you. This shop is tucked away on an

inside street in Khalidiyah the queues here would

rival an Apple store on an iPhone launch day.

Where do you see your blog in 5 years?

    I don’t have a long-term plan. I hope to develop my

photography and styling skills more and be able to

attend more events. As of now, I’d like to take it

    one post at a time.

How did you build such a loyal

    following?

I had never expected to have readers or

this many followers. Nor do I keep that

as a target. I have been lucky that my

readers enjoy what I write and that my

    followers keep increasing with time.

    Describe the local dining scene…

You’re spoiled for choice as far as

    Middle Eastern food is concerned.

Breakfast and brunch options are plenty.

And since the capital city is a small

island, you will always find something

    interesting around the corner.

Your favourite places to eat in

    the city…

Lips Café in Marina Mall has a classic menu

with soup, sandwiches and salads. Their shish

    taouk is consistently good.

I would skip lunch any day for a slice of

    Magnolia Bakery’s Chocolate Cake, newly

    opened in Galleria Mall.

The royal ambience and the extensive Indian

menu has us returning to the Pepper Mill in

Wahda Mall on special occasions. Don’t leave

without trying the lamb Barrah Kababs.

    SAYANA RAHIMAN

Hi Sayana! Tell us a little bit about My Mouth is

Full – what made you start the blog?

This food blog is a project to chronicle all the

great eats I’ve tried and tasted in the UAE and

wherever we travel. It’s a personal record of

recipes I’ve read and learnt from family and the

fantastic community of food bloggers. When I’m too

old to chew or remember and have lost my sense of

taste, through this blog I’ll be able to relive my

life with family and friends alongside our food. I

have a sweet-tooth that is insatiable. This should

explain why most of my posts will fall under the

    sickly sweet category.

What are the pros and cons about being a blogger

    in Abu Dhabi?

Pros: The food scene in the capital is really

developing. As a foodie, this gives me a lot of

    choices to look forward to.

Getting first access to exclusive dining

    opportunities.

Cons: Most of the food events are in Dubai

currently, and are held on weekdays, so I end up

missing a lot of inaugurations, restaurant reviews

    and meet-the-chef do’s.

Most restaurants in the capital are either fine

    dining or cheap-eats. Dining options

to explore are currently limited, but

    restaurants are slowly sprouting all

    over town.

Where do you find your foodie inspiration?

I have always loved food and all my

senses are eager to trying something

new. My inspiration can come from

anything – from something I taste, read

or see. For me, it’s all about being

    open and exploring new things.

Staying true to his Vietnamese roots, Chef Bruce knows more than a thing, or two, about authentic and delicious Vietnamese food after being inspired to cook from watching his father in the kitchen. “My father really loved cooking for the family when I was growing up. I used to watch him cook and think ‘that’s what I want to do’,” he says.

Chef Bruce grew up in a tight-knit Vietnamese community where food brought people together. He broke into the professional world of cooking 12 years ago and has since worked in numerous restaurants in Hanoi and Macau (basically, he is the best of the best at Vietnamese cuisine that we have here!).
