Hydrothermal Synthesis of Mesoporous Silica with MCM-41 Structure using Water

by

Abstract

Hydrothermal synthesis of mesoporous silica MCM-41 using water glass (sodium silicate) as a silica source

was examined. Obtained products were evaluated by XRD, SEM and N2 adsorption/desorption isotherm.

Mesoporous silica MCM-41 with regular hexagonal structures was able to be synthesized by the hydrothermal

reaction for 24h at 398K. However, its hexagonal structure was destroyed by heating at 1033K. The destruction of

hexagonal structure was presumed to be dependent on the existence of sodium ions. Therefore, sodium ions in the

mesoporous silica MCM-41 were removed by ionic exchange. As a result, the mesoporous silica having a higher

specific surface area and thermo stability could be synthesized. The quantity of methylene blue adsorption on the

prepared porous silica was almost the same. It is considered that the adsorption of methylene blue with large

molecules happens only on the silica surface.
