ABSTRACTThe reason for this investigation was due to the needs, demands and uses of information we have on municipal archives of Escazu and San Jose, to evaluate the quality of services and propose suggestions for improvements and innovation. The implemented methodology was exploratory and descriptive, because the subject matter of the files users is new and because it describes and analyzes the topic widely studied.During the months of January to April 2003, the Central archive of the municipality of San Jos handled a total of 2058 loans of documents from 1956 which were internal and 102 external. There was an information vacuum eight months since that period ballots were discarded.In the central archivist of the Municipality of Escaz there were a total of 554 loans of documents during 2003, of which 529 were internal and 25 external users.The findings of the investigation indicated that there is a bibliographic gap on the issue of file-user studies. The research presented relevant data archival municipal task and the role played by the central archives for the proper functioning of those bodies. The municipal archives that were studied did not have all the archival services.

RESUMENEl motivo de esta investigacin se debi a las necesidades, demandas y usos de informacin que se tiene sobre archivos municipales de Escaz y san Jos, con el fin evaluar la calidad de los servicios y proponer propuestas de mejoras e innovacin. La metodologa implementada fue de tipo exploratorio y descriptivo debido a que el tema de estudio de usuarios en los archivos es nuevo y porque describe y analiza ampliamente el tema en estudio. Durante los meses de enero a abril del 2003, el archivo Central de la municipalidad de san Jos atendi un total de 2058 prstamos de documentos de los cuales 1956 fueron internos y 102 externos. Existi un vaco de informacin de ocho meses debido a que las boletas de ese periodo fueron desechadas.En el archivero central de la Municipalidad de Escaz hubo un total de 554 prstamos de documentos durante el ao 2003, de los cuales 529 fueron de usuarios internos y 25 de externos.Las conclusiones de la investigacin indicaron que existi un vaco bibliogrfico con respecto al tema de estudios de usuarios en archivos. La investigacin present datos relevantes del quehacer archivstico municipal y del papel que desempeaban los archivos centrales para el buen funcionamiento de esos entes. Los archivos municipales que se estudiaron no disponan de todos los servicios archivsticos.
