Pushing LimitsPushing Limits

Our lunch drive over to Columbus was a well-turned out event with eight cars taking part. There would have been nine cars except the group unknowingly left the Hasbroucks in the lot of Off the Leaf. This is another example of why we really need to improve with RSVPs if you are attending. The weather cooperated and made for a great day. The Big Sky Region Driver’s Education is scheduled for May 19 and 20. To register go to the website, http://bsk.pca.org/DE.htm, for the Big Sky Region, click on the DE button and look for the “Sign Up” link. This year they have moved to Mo-torsports Registration from Clubregistration.net which means you’ll need to sign up for a free account there. Lewistown is still the best deal for a DE in the entire country. Registration for the 57th Porsche Parade in Salt Lake City opened on March 27. As of this writing there are over 550 entrants. Early registration is very important if you’re thinking of participating in the Concourse, Autocross, Time Distance Rally or Technical Quiz as these events fill up quickly. So far, there are six Absaroka members heading to Salt Lake City for all or part of the week’s events. I hope you are able to make it to Parade, even if only for a few days. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Our next event is what has become our region’s official sea-son kick off, the Tour to Chico Hot Spring Resort. The over-night option and dinner in the Wine Cellar sold out, which is great, but there are still lots of opportunities to come out for the drive and lunch. April 21, is the start of National Park

Week which means the entrance to Yellowstone is free. There will be plenty of time in the afternoon to take advan-tage of a nice northern park tour or simply to discover what’s at Mammoth, and the Terraces. It will be a fun time. Our Next Event: Tour to Chico Hot Springs Resort When: Saturday, April 21, 2012 Time: 09:00 AM, Billings Group, depart at 09:30 10:00 AM, Bozeman Group, depart at 10:30 Where: Off the Leaf, Grand Avenue, Billings Rest Area at Interstate I-94 & 19th St, Bozeman Rendezvous: 11:00 AM, Albertson’s parking lot in Livingston, MT RSVP: Please let Fred, Steve or myself know if you are coming on the drive Thank you to Greg William & Mary Ronan, Scott Cranston & Kathy Korum, Ed & Ann Rice, for your recent renewals. Absaroka News — February Meeting

February 25th was the date for our 2nd Spuds Baked Potato Bar. This year we held the event at Dana Motors, our gra-cious hosts. In attendance were Greg Kohn, Jim and Francie Hasbrouck, Daryl and Stephanie Haider, Drew and Stephanie Mitchell, Jo and myself, and our hosts Del McCormick and Mark Seitz.

February is a tough time to hold a get together. Weather is always a factor and the distance for members outside Billings to travel is certainly an understandable obstacle. Still, it was good getting together and catching up on lives, cars, and friendships.

This year’s topping were less exotic than last year, but were delicious. They included Francie Hasbrouck’s wonderful BBQ Chicken, Dan’s Indian chicken Tikki Masala, Drew Mitchell’s bacon bits, and the standbys of butter, sour cream and chives. Drew was amazed that a whole package of ba-con ended up as a cup or less of bits. No wonder bacon bits are expensive! Drew also made some killer brownies, which if you love chocolate like I do, were too good to pass on.

In the form of a club meeting we reviewed the upcoming cal-endar, hyped the Chico trip in April, the Porsche Parade in July and introduced our new logo gear to the group.

Del McCormick told us about the new direction they are tak-ing with the loss of the Saab brand. They have purchased the Porsche specific Durametric diagnostic tool and are going to work toward expanding their used car business and ser-vice. They already sold a Boxster S and a Cayenne turbo in the past few weeks!

All in all, it was a simple and fun meeting with laughs, jokes, and good times. No one drove their Porsche which proves it’s not the cars...it’s the people!

Taking advantage of the beautiful spring weather for the drive to Columbus were Fred Magers, Susan Finn, Stephanie Haider and her friend Debbie Brown, Shane, Natalie and An-nabelle Lorenz, Greg Kohn, Dan Cole and his granddaughter MacKenzie Mercer, Tom Agnew and new Porsche owner and prospective new member, Joe Hayes. Unfortunately, we departed without Jim and Francie Has-brouck. That’s probably my fault for not waiting a bit longer and knowing for sure who all was coming. Please RSVP so we know who to expect. Joe Hayes joined our group at the invitation of Greg Kohn. Joe is the new owner of a silver 2000 911 Carrera Cabriolet. Joe lives in Billings and we look forward to having him and his wife, Victoria, as new members in our Absaroka circle.

The drive to Columbus, Montana via the Molt Road, Buffalo Trail Road and the frontage road from Park City really is a nice drive and easy length at about 60 miles. It has some nice straights, fun turns and beautiful scenery of bluffs, open plains and the Yellowstone River that is typical of our Billings area. The first part of the journey west down Rimrock Road towards Molt shares the road with cyclists on a stretch of road named after our past president, Dr. Jean Ellis, who in addition to being a Porsche fan was an avid cyclist. The road twists past the Iron Wood subdivision, and climbs up to the open Montana plains on a razorback ridge towards Molt. From the plains one has a great view of the Crazy Mountains and the nearby Beartooth Mountains off in the dis-tance. Just before Molt, we turned left on Buffalo Trail and headed towards Laurel. Buffalo Trail Road winds its way through the canyon down past the monument, which tells about the Nez Perce on their flight towards Canada and their fight with the US Calvary at the Battle of Canyon Creek on

September 13, 1877. Passing the Yellowstone Veteran’s Cemetery we arrived in Laurel. In Laurel we followed the old highway to Park City along the Yellowstone River towards Columbus. A flash of the head-lights from the Cayman S approaching from the west wasn’t a warning of Montana’s finest ahead, but rather Tom Agnew joining us from Big Timber. Reaching our destination at the 307 Bar & Grille we found a table (next to three Montana State Troopers) and enjoyed a nice lunch. Afterwards we took a group picture at the bank across the street. The secret plan was for all to wear a hat in honor of our dear friend, Lucy Magers, as a surprise for Fred. The plan succeeded. The group disbanded with some members heading home and others (Fred, Stephanie and Debbie) making a full day of it by driving over to Roscoe to the Grizzly Bar, and then over to Red Lodge before returning home. It was a fun day, beautiful top-down weather! It looked as if spring had arrived in the Absaroka Region; however, Mother Nature provided us with an early April Fools of about three inches of snow on Mon-day!

Name for new Porsche SUV is Macan Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart’s new sports car in the SUV segment has been given the name Macan. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines suppleness, power, fascination and dy-namics – core characteristics of the new off-road car. “The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG. “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.” As the fifth Porsche model line, the Macan is a central plank of Strategy 2018, by which the sports car manufacturer wishes to expand its model portfolio. Porsche intends the

Press Releases

Macan to emulate the success of the Cayenne. The SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013. To that end, the site in this city in Saxony is being expanded into a fully-fledged production plant including body assembly line and paint shop – with 500 million euro of investment one of the biggest building projects in Porsche’s corporate his-tory. In the medium-term, the sports car manufacturer will be creating more than 1,000 new jobs here. Word names at Porsche have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics: the name Boxster describes the combination of boxer engine and roadster, Cayenne stands for sharpness, the Cayman is snappy and agile and a Panamera is more than a Gran Tur-ismo, capable also of winning the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race.

The Drendel family Porsche collection consigned to the Ame-lia Island Auction is recognized as perhaps the world’s finest private collection of its kind. It consists of both road going and racing cars spanning 25 years of Porsche history from 1973 – 1997. Amazingly, 10 of the 18 Porsches offered for sale are done so without reserve and for many it marks the first time they will have ever been made available at auction.

In order to accommodate the addition of this extensive 18-car collection Gooding & Company (the acclaimed auction house) has moved up the time of the auction to start at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 9th. This particular auction, located at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation, is but one of many that will take place over the 4 day Amelia Island Concours D’Ele-gance. See http://www.ameliaconcours.org/ for more info on the weekend and see www.goodingco.com for more info on this specific auction. The auction will be broadcast live at http://www.goodingco.com/auction.

Ranging in models from a 1991 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet to a 1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder there’s literally something for everyone at this auction. Here’s a sampling of Porsche below.

1973 Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder Chassis 917-30-004 Estimate: $3.25 – $4 million

The Porsche 917 racing program was one of the most suc-cessful in the history of motor sport and the 1973 917/30 Can-Am Spyder represents its pinnacle. With a 1,000 hp turbo-charged flat-twelve, American racing champion Mark Donohue’s 917/30 was so dominant that the Can Am Chal-lenge Cup was disbanded and the other manufacturers with-drew due to their inability to compete.

1984 Porsche 962 Chassis 962-103 Estimate: $1.75 – $2.225 million

According to Gooding & Company specialists, this car is the finest example of the Porsche 962 and one of the most suc-cessful racing cars of its generation. With only two owners from new, this back-to-back 24 Hours of Daytona winner will be one of the Drendel Family Collection’s most significant offerings at the auction with its immediately recognizable Löwenbräu livery, list of legendary drivers, unrivaled racing record and superb documentation.

1976 Porsche 935/76 Chassis 930 570 0001 (R14) Estimate: $1.7 – $2 million

The first 935 built, this car served as the prototype and devel-opment mule for one of the most successful series of Por-sche racing cars. This historically-significant example ran as a factory team car under the recognizable Martini & Rossi livery and its podium finishes at Watkins Glen and Dijon helped Porsche capture the Group 5 World Championship in 1976. In addition to its impressive provenance and great originality, this factory race car has the remarkable dis-tinction of being the first Porsche with a 930 serial num-ber prefix.

1997 Porsche 911 GT1 Evolution Chassis 993-GT1-004 Estimate: $900,000 – $1.2 million

This rare factory team car – one of just four built – has com-peted at top events (Le Mans, Nürburgring and Laguna Seca) in the highest levels of international racing with known drivers behind its wheel. Later campaigned by Rohr Racing at Day-tona and Harry Bytzek in the Canada GT Challenge Cup, GT1-004 has one of the most impressive racing records of any factory GT1.

1975 Porsche 934 Chassis 930 670 0155 Estimate: $800,000 – $1 million

The racing variant of the road-going 930, the 934 expanded on the success of the RSR, winning the European GT Cham-pionship as well as the TransAm Championship in North America. The second 934 constructed, this car was actively campaigned through the early 1980s, culminating in a first in class at the 1982 24 Hours of Le Mans. In regards to this car, noted Porsche authority Bruce Anderson was quoted as say-ing “it is the most successful 934 to race in international com-petition.”

US car owners award Zuffenhausen sports car manufacturer top ranking

“Porsche is the best European car brand”

Stuttgart. The sports car manufacturer Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is the best European car brand. This is borne out by the current Vehicle Dependability Study 2012 (VDS) unveiled today by the prestigious US market research Institute J.D. Power and Associates. The study focuses on the vehicles’ long-term quality in the US market. It was based on a poll of more than 31,000 American motorists who have owned their 2009 model year vehicles for three years. The Porsche 911 – the world-famous icon from the main plant in Zuffenhausen – is the best vehicle in its seg-ment. The European car plants’ review also gave top slot to the Porsche production plant in Stuttgart for the long term quality of its sports cars. And the Porsche brand achieved its best score in the VDS for freedom from er-rors. That makes the overall result for long term quality the best score yet awarded by J.D. Power
