�e San Carlos canal links the Maipo river with the Mapocho river, its

waters �ow from south to north.

San Carlos canal has approximately 32 kilometers in lenght and its

construction dates back to the late eighteenth century. �e speci�c

area of the Canal goes from the hydroelectric plant La Florida, to

Departmental Avenue, being this a stretch of about 4 kilometers long.

Within this area the canal San Carlos varies in relation to its edges

with di�erent instances, some with minimal equipment for public

spaces, others deny the canal banks leaving them without access and

others are large empty lots without any infrastructure. �is stretch of

the canal is part of the municipality of La Florida in Santiago. It is

located in the south east part of the city and is the third municipality

in population of Santiago (365.563 inhabitants), with a density of

9.356 hab./km2 (according to 2002 Census data).

The Space Maker: community upgrading through public spaces in post-Apartheid Khayelitsha.

ABSA Tower competition

The focus of my Thesis work was a strategy proposal for a set of public spaces in the district of Khayelitsha, the last area of Cape Town to be formally set aside for African residents during the period of Apartheid.The aim of this intervention wanted to be a statement against the architectural logic of divide and rule promoted by Apartheid: connect through public spaces to empower local activities.The proposed interventions envisioned the creation of public interpretable spaces characterized by a high level of reversibility and punctual implementations, that can hugely impact the inhabitants everyday life and could be implemented or reinterpreted very easily according to the local needs.This project created a public space interpretable according to the users’ needs by characterizing a space devoid of identity by consolidating services and functions.With this project, I wanted to improve the living conditions of people in the disadvantaged district of Khayelitsha by reconnecting its different parts, which were designed to be disconnected and isolated in the first place because of an Apartheid planning logic.

I decided to envision a series of punctual interventions that aimed to define a shared public space through light gestures, such as the creation of shaded areas and gathering spots around water points, in order to foster the process of social cohesion and community upgrading that is typically ignited by exchange of knowledge, thoughts and goods.My expectations were that the community of Khayelitsha would have acquired pride and self-awareness by recognizing itself in a space that was meant to be public, hence would belong to everybody and represents everybody, and would have started a virtuous process of growth.Khayelitsha’s urban asset is characterized by the logic of the three Ds: - Dense- Disorienting- DividingWe can find density in the redundant disposition of RDP houses, which are disposed in rows that fill empty land plots, while natural features are perceived as a dividing element; main roads are structured so to disorient instead of creating visual axialities.I decided to consider half of the district, which expands with the same logic from the central railway spine; at first, I overlaid the existing empty areas with the public use destination plots, according to development strategic plan of the Cape Flats district of 2016.

As a second step, I considered permeable, semipermeable and not permeable borders at a pedestrian level.The third step involved the envisioning of new possible pedestrian axis that have the specific aim of reconnect the different areas of the district, in particular through its cross sections.I then focused on the axis that went from the Kayelitsha CBD train station to the natural border of the driftsand hills on the edge of the district.

Practice of ReconnectionAs mentioned before, Khayelitsha district is a very problematic area that is currently struggling with issues of poverty and place related stigma:the proposed interventions were therefore focusing on the creation of public interpretable spaces characterized by a high level of reversibility and punctual implementations, that could hugely impact the inhabitants’ everyday life, but still can be implemented or dismissed very easily according to the local needs.

This gadget series that resulted in the creation of a Line of T-shirts and bags was designed in occasion of the Collecchio Multicultural festival (Collecchio_ Parma_Italy), the graphic layout is a reference to the 2008 U.S. presidential election poster “ Yes we can” designed for Barack Obama by Shepard Fairey.

NEST (Next Economical Socially Sustainable Transportable) is a modular living unit that responds to the growing request of essential, full-optioned, multi-purpose pods wich can be easily carried, stocked and built in very different places, at very low cost.The most important feature of the NEST is that it requires only a minimum of 25 square meters ground surface and a 4 meters height site to build a completely independent living unit that can be even combined with other modules in order to create bigger spaces for many different purposes.

The course in Town Planning was focused on the creation of a new residential settlement in an abandoned area near the town of Pioltello (Milano, Italy).The intention was to create a new center that would serve as a rule, model and device for subsequent urban developments and at the same time would address crucial issues such as ethnic integration and enhancement of the rural culture.The project was developed from the study of a low-cost housing unit that once combined could answer to the needs of different typologies of users.

The purpose of this project was to analyze the relationship between the consolidated urban environment and subsequent interventions thanks to the case study, a hostel in the heart of the historic city centre of Milan (IT).The work took into account all project stages, with particular attention to the hostel’s role in the global culture, a place of social cohesion and knowledge exchange for the global youth, with a specific reference to the case of Generator Hostel.

This visual campaign was designed for the exhibition “CRISTALLI!” held by the Chemistry Departement of the University of Parma (Italy) in occasion of the International Year of Crystallography.The Exhibition Logo shows one of the main landmarks of Parma, the Battistero, that turns in a crystal of quartz, so to symbolyze the bond between the city and the Exhibition.The graphic of the poster campaign shows the crystalline structure of the quartz that can be seen underneath the cuts on a green plan, so to say that chemical compounds and crystals are at the basis of the world that surrounds us.My contribution involved the creation of visual campaigns, graphic and logo design, merchandising and the graphic layout of the official catalogue.

This work was my graphic interpretation of the word “verso”, which means direction, opposite, but also poetry line or animal noise.This design aimed to depict what a person could hear during a night in the jungle: that is why I decided to place a series of open animal jaws and beaks on an empty page, so to show how the noises could appear and disappear out of the blue, in the silence of the night.

The Santiago Emergent Ecologies competition was the occasion to investigate the topics of possible environmental developments in fast growth scenarios, such as the reality of Santiago de Chile.The competition started from the need of envisioning equitable development and a sustainable future of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago;the competition aimed to display a set of proposals for the area comprised between the city of Santiago and the El Roble ecological conservation site, which is one of the major reservoirs of biodiversity in Chile: in fact, any action taken towards this major ecosystem pool would directly impact the environment and the quality of life in the Region of Santiago, hence influencing the potential economic development of the area.The objective was to take this site as an opportunity to generate new periurban scenarios for the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, creating a productive landscape that at the same time could protect biodiversity and promote a better relationship with the environment.

This research provided important lessons for urban policy makers in South Africa on how land management reforms, private ownership, enterprise formalisation and entrepreneurial investment have resulted in a dynamic high street economy for the district of Katutura in Windhoek (Namibia).The exhibition explained how an enabling policy environment in Eveline Street has resulted in rapid business growth and sector diversification.My role was to curate the design of the exhibition panels and the editing and publication of the book“Transformative Leisure Economies_Eveline Street, Katutura, Windhoek”.

The purpose of this spatial study was to define the core of cross border shopping activity in order to frame the survey of inner city shopkeepers in Johannesburg CBD. The mapping exercise delineated the retail space that is likely to accommodate cross border shopping in the inner city of Johannesburg. This exercise preceded and informed the sampling undertaken for a detailed qualitative survey of shopkeepers in the area.The spatial survey scanned the geographic area and spread of retail.My role was to contribute to the on field research and develop a mapping method which I did by geolocating every building in the focus area and cross-matching such information with the quantity and tipology of goods sold through a Geo information software.This exercise resulted in a set of interactive maps that provided an insightful perspective of Johannesburg CBD.

The aim for the Conceptual Spatial Framework for the Johannesburg Zoo was to improve the standards and visitor experience to make it a facility of international standing, demonstrate the value of a well articulate plan to guide growth and development and to optimise the Zoo’s assets and work towards a more financially autonomous entity through its existing and proposed resources. My role in this project was to create six scenarios that would immerse the viewer in higly iconic scenes that would highlight the features of the proposed zoo experience.Moreover, I rendered the design of the masterplan which proposed an immesive landscape experience based on the theme of the South African Savannah which would have held a set of minor exotic landscapes.

This poster was created to advertise the solo performance “RAW” by actress Lerato Sefoloshe.Being this a debut piece for the actress, the performance script was intentionally roughly cut , hence the title “RAW”.I decided to match this idea of roughness with a bold red band and the word “RAW” placed on the actress mouth that is captured while she is screaming.

In shaping a meaningful space in Johannesburg the project aimed to connect the multiplicity of users around this building. These included the ABSA community, building inhabitants and the pubic at large.Through this, the plaza would become a significant public space that is supported by adjacent functions and marked by the iconic tower. This cross-programming of uses was meant to encourage the connections of diverse user groups.This was realised through the definition of the plaza level and arrangement of public and semi-public spaces on the first three levels of the tower.My contribution to this project was to curate a series of renders that would envision the multiplicity of uses and the livebility of the public space.In addition, I created the concept branding for this project, which was inspired by the colorful facade of the building based on a randomized binary code.

Through the different perspectives and experiences of its participants, this workshop aimed to generate debate and reflection about habitation and the city by working on the San Carlos canal, which links the Maipo river with the Mapocho river. The focus area of the intervention was where the canal San Carlos varied in relation to its edges in problematic ways, sometimes with minimal allowance for public spaces, poor access to the river banks or large empty plots without any infrastructure. The workshop aim was to activate and revitalize this area, proposing public and common spaces in relation to the canal, the urban fabric and the associated context.
