**********

On the occasion of India's 68th Independence day, here are some interesting and unknown facts related to India and independence.

Ÿ It is said that the first version of the current national flag was made by Pingali Venkayya at Bezwada in 1921. It was made up of two colors-red and green-representing the two major communities. Gandhiji suggested the addition of a white strip to represent the remaining communities of India and the spinning wheel to symbolize progress of the Nation.

Ÿ The current flag has three colours in it. The top strip saffron stands for courage and sacrifice; the middle portion white for peace, truth, purity and green for faith, fertility and chivalry. The Ashok Chakra at the centre of the flag — righteousness.

Ÿ Khadi Development and Village Industries Commission is the only licenced flag production and supply unit in India. As of 2008, the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha based in Dharwad was the sole manufacturer of the flag. Earlier, flags were made with Jayadhar, a popular variety of cotton grown in Karnataka. But recently, Khadi Gramodyoga has started using Bt cotton instead of the indigenous varieties.

Ÿ When India became independent on August 15, 1947 there was no National Anthem. Even though the Bengali invocation of Jana Gana Mana was written in 1911, it was not considered as national anthem till 1950.

Ÿ Mountbatten chose the day since Aug 15 as it also commemorated the second anniversary of Japan's surrender to the Allied Forces. North Korea, South Korea, Bahrain and Republic of the Congo share their independence day with India.

Ÿ After India's independence, Portugal amended its constitution and declared Goa as a Portuguese state. Indian troops invaded Goa on December 19, 1961 and annexed it to India.

Ÿ The Sanskrit name for India is Bharat Ganarajya. That is the reason why it is also called Bharat. The name “India” comes from the Indus River, which is where earliest settlers made their homes. The Indus valley is one of the world's earliest urban civilizations.

Puttaveeramma Ashram is a home for deaf and dumb girls. Innerwheel

donated 2 cooking vessels and used clothes for these

inmates on 6th Aug.

IW celebrated Ramzan by giving a surprise visit to our Muslim friends (Rukhsana, Saba, Hanifa, Neelufer and Jabeen) and wishing them with a box of sweets.

First General Body Meeting of IW Midtown was held on 11th Aug at “The Veg Court” hosted by President Premilla Jain, Secretary LavanyaSrinivasan, Shama Milton and Saba Suryani. President and Secretary looked very professional with their new blazers and the meeting was also conducted in a very systematic and organized manner. President Mrs. Premilla Jain gave caps with IW logo to all the members to be used during projects, branding Innerwheel. A very good thought indeed.

inally the news is out. Midtown's most eligible Fcandidate for presidentship has finally agreed to be one, 2 years from now. My immediate reaction to

the breaking news was one of disbelief and thought it was a joke as usual. But when I came to terms with reality that Rtn. Harish has really agreed to be the president Elect for Rtn. Umesh, I started to wonder what really has changed his mind who was so stubborn for the last atleast 10years. We all know that this little master is capable, will do it differently something which all of us are looking forward to eagerly. Then what made him to accept finally?

I threw this question to the folks in midtown and as ever uproarious replies was almost spontaneous. Raaghu was the first to respond- “Harish is now an enlightened man under the jataka tree-hence the decision". Nagi added “Harish's son Naren has threatened that he will become president of Midtown before his father”. Azeez was quick to add “Harish went to Frazer town on Ramzan and had Patther gosh to the brim and so made this drastic decision”. Naveen Chandra never misses in such lively conversations added “somebody must have given supari to finish off Harish if he did not become president in 2yrs”. So the conversation went on. I thought I will put this interesting question on what's app and invite more exciting answers. Chandu replied “ Bhemanna told that if you become president your height will increase, so Kullappa is trying this way out to increase his height, better late than never. ”. Secretary Mohan has always witty responses “ Actually I did not think of how Harish has agreed to become the president , nor did I worry who will be his Secretary –obviously it will be Rakesh.. I am just wondering who will be the treasurer to match this 'Rustom Jodi' and what will be the theme for that year- 'save rotary' or 'calculate rotary' “. Rakesh as usual dissected the reason threadbare and sent an email “All Midtown presidents achieve more than expected. The moment they become President-Elect, prosperity follows suit (even if they are already HNIs). Either they will buy a new car or move into a new house or start a new business or get their children married or float new companies or get

national awards or get elected in other reputed bodies (like chamber of commerce, CII, golf club, sports club, cosmo club, etc) and the list goes on. After Harish made a thorough analysis of the prospects (almost got a PhD for it!!!), he couldn't resist the offer. All the best 'King' Harish.”

Whereas all the reasons above cited are on the lighter side of the coin, the real reason still remains a mystery and needs to come from the horse's mouth. Veterans of Midtown Nandoos, Raghus, Ramkis may think that finally they have succeeded in their efforts because convincing the little master to accept the responsibility was a challenge to them. I remember I had tried my tactics in a kind of blackmailing – “you may not get the same support you get now if you become president later because the present energy of midtown would have died down” .

Whatever be the reason there are 2 people now in midtown who are relieved and are happiest persons, one obviously is Umesh, because he got the president elect and he can start planning for his year seriously. Second is Rtn. Dr. Ravindranth, because Umesh was after him like “Bethal” for the last few months to make him prez. elect. In fact Ravindranath of late had started avoiding coming to the club for the fear of Umesh. Third person if you have to mention it will be yours truly because now the queue is longer with Harish, Manoj, Ravindranth, Rakesh…..etc.,

Now read the thought for the week-

RI President Gary C.K. Huang is urging all

Rotary members to Light Up Rotary by

organizing a Rotary Day in 2014-15.

The concept is simple: Hold a fun, informal

event in your community to introduce the public

to your club and Rotary. You'll not only improve

Rotary's image in your community, you'll also

boost interest in joining your club. "We need to

showcase our good work to everyone in the

community," says Huang. "Rotary Days need to

be fun and all inclusive... Let's give people the

opportunity to experience what it's like to make

a difference."

HOST A ROTARY DAY

Any club, big or small, can host a Rotary Day.

Neighboring clubs can pool their resources and

co -host an event, and entire districts can come

together for a large - scale Rotary Day. In fact,

several clubs and districts already have hosted

picnics, concerts, parades, and other Rotary Day

events. In addition, the Rotary Board of

Directors and other senior leaders will facilitate

several national Rotary Days in 2014-15.

Here are some ideas for your Rotary Day:

An outdoor picnic or barbecue A sporting event

or concert An event associated with a public

parade or festival An event at a museum, art

gallery, or cultural center A reception or buffet

dinner
