TWO ON TAP BIO TWO ON TAP marks the creative collaboration of celebrated musical theatre performers Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano. Since debuting in February 2010, TWO ON TAP has entertained tens of thousands at theatrical concerts across the USA, gala events, and headline performances onboard luxury cruise liners. Heralded by presenters and critics as “a drink of cool, clear water in the midst of what so often seems in present times to be a cultural drought devoid of romance and lofty matters of the heart” (Delta Independent), TWO ON TAP aims to breathe new life into classic song-and-dance with clever arrangements, a meaningful connection to the audience, and signature high-energy routines. Recent accomplishments include regular appearances on Queen Mary 2’s transatlantic route and an exciting 65-city tour of the Midwestern and Mountain states. Educational outreach and helping to create “tomorrow’s audience” are an important part of TWO ON TAP’s mission, and Ron and Melissa enjoy leading school and community programs in conjunction with their performances. Audition workshops for aspiring high-school theatre performers, talkbacks with youngsters on the history and evolution of tap dancing, and teaching a “Tea for Two” routine to young-at-heart seniors crossing the Atlantic have sparked renewed interest in what some had considered a “lost” art form. The duo entertained visitors and veterans at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans throughout the summer of 2013 before jetting away to entertain audiences in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe onboard Princess Cruises. In addition to their appearances throughout South America, Europe and the Far East, TWO ON TAP maintains an active concert schedule in the US with tours through the Great Plains, the Pacific Northwest, and New England scheduled for the 2013-2014 season. Their CD release, TWO ON TAP: A Tribute to Song and Dance, is available on iTunes, Amazon, or their website: www.two-on-tap.com!

Melissa Giattino began her professional performing career at the age of 17 in the National Tour of A Chorus Line and hasn't looked back since. While appearing in the all-Gershwin musical Crazy for You at the famous Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia, Ms. Giattino auditioned for the Hal Prince/Susan Stroman production of Show Boat and soon found herself singing and dancing alongside an all-star cast on London's West End. Her talents as a true "triple-threat" performer eventually led her back to her home state of New York, where she made her Broadway Debut as an original revival cast member of the tap-dancing spectacular, 42nd Street.

Her incredible talents have been featured as a member of the most well-known kick-line in history, the Radio City Rockettes, and she has assisted and dance-

captained for some of the most famous tap choreographers in the business, including Tony Award winner Danny Daniels and Tony Award nominee Randy Skinner. Gifted with a beautiful voice as well, Ms. Giattino has starred in musicals on stages around the world, including the title role in the International Tour of Peter Pan, Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, Esther Smith in Meet Me in St. Louis, and Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun.

SAMPLE ONE-HOUR OUTREACH PROGRAM

1) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: I Got Rhythm DISCUSSION: The Great American Songbook Notes:

• It is a song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin. • It was originally written as a slow song for Treasure Girl (1928) and found

another, faster setting in Girl Crazy starring Ethel Merman. • Inspiration for our show: The 1992 Broadway production of Crazy For You based

on Girl Crazy, which Ron and Melissa performed together regionally over 15 years ago. “I Got Rhythm” is the big Act I Finale of that show.

2) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: Cloudburst DISCUSSION: Motifs and recurring figures in music Notes:

• Composed by: Jimmy Harris / Leroy Kirkland • The first known occurrence of the "shave and a haircut" motif dates back to 1899. • Used in jazz, it was also used by comedians and dancers. "Shave and a haircut"

eventually became a famous piece of tap choreography • In music, the call "shave and a haircut" and the associated response “two bits” is a

simple, 7-note musical couplet or riff. Popularly used at the end of a musical performance, usually for comic effect. It is used both melodically and rhythmically.

• Demonstration/Participation: “Shave and a haircut” with vocals/taps • A perfect fit for TWO ON TAP because of our love of comedy, jazz and dance.

3) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: Just You, Just Me DISCUSSION: Jazz Notes:

• This is a song from the 1929 musical film Marianne, composed by Jesse Greer with lyrics by Raymond Klages.

• The song has had many revisions after its first appearance and has become one of the most enduring jazz standards of all time,

• The song has been recorded vocally by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland and Rosemary Clooney.

• Our inspiration was an a cappella (voices only) group called Rockapella perform the song

• Jazz often incorporates improvisation. As tap dancers, we include “trading 4s,” a dance form of improvisation that suits the song well.

• Demonstration: “trading 4s”

4) DISCUSSION: The Origins of Tap Dance

• Tap is a form of dance characterized by using the sound of one's tap shoes hitting the floor as a percussive instrument. As such, it is also commonly considered to be a form of music as well as dance . . .visual and auditory.

• Two major variations on tap dance exist: Rhythm (Jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the upper body and dance. It is widely performed as a part of musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses more on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the Jazz tradition.

• The sound is made by shoes with a metal "tap" on the heel and toe. • History of tap dance . . . from African slave ships, incorporating Lancashire

clogging and Irish step-dance elements, nails on shoes, pennies on shoes, metal/aluminum taps.

• "Soft-Shoe" is a rhythm form of tap dancing that doesn't require special shoes, and while rhythm is generated by tapping of the feet, it also uses sliding of the feet (even sometimes using scattered sand on the stage to enhance the sound of the performer's sliding feet) more often than modern rhythm tap. It preceded what is currently considered to be modern tap, but has since declined in popularity.

5) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: Tea for Two DISCUSSION: Tap Ballet Notes:

• “Tea for Two” is a song from the 1925 musical No, No, Nanette with music by Vincent Youmans and lyrics by Irving Caesar.

• Tap Ballet: brings elements of storytelling into tap dance using narrative structure, clearly drawn characters, and symbolic movement to create a cohesive piece.

• “Tea for Two” is one of the most popular and most requested song-and-dance pieces of all time.

6) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: Sunny Side of the Street DISCUSSION: Arrangements Notes:

• Composed by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Dorothy Fields in 1933 • All of the great jazz artists recorded the song including Benny Goodman, Lionel

Hampton, Errol Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum, James Booker, and Count Basie.

• We were inspired to create a fresh version of this old classic with dance breaks, comedy and variety. We accomplished this by creating an arrangement.

• Demonstration: original version of the chorus vs. arranged version.

PAGE 3

7) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: Yes Sir That’s My Baby DISCUSSION: Vaudeville Notes:

• Vaudeville is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment popular in the United States and Canada from the early 1880s until the early 1930s. Each performance was made up of a series of separate, unrelated acts grouped together on a common bill.

• Types of acts included popular and classical musicians, dancers, comedians, trained animals, magicians, female and male impersonators, acrobats, illustrated songs, jugglers, one-act plays or scenes from plays, athletes, lecturing celebrities, minstrels, and movies.

• A vaudeville performer is often referred to as a vaudevillian. • Today’s equivalent is America's Got Talent.

8) PERFORMANCE NUMBER: Choo Choo Honeymoon DISCUSSION: Musical Theatre Notes:

• Discuss Two on Tap’s background/credits in Broadway Musical Theatre • This is only song in our show that is lifted completely from the musical as

performed on stage (vs. being created just for the Two on Tap show) • This song is from Dames at Sea, a musical with book and lyrics by George

Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise. • Includes many of the elements previously discussed: arrangements, improvisation

FULL REVIEW NEW ORLEANS TIMES-PICAYUNE (New Orleans, LA) With charismatic performers, 'Two on Tap' dances into audience's heart By Theodore P. Mahne June 22, 2013 Audiences at the [National World War II Museum’s] Stage Door Canteen, young and old, relish the sentimental journeys conjured by so many of its Big Band shows and nostalgic tributes to the stars of the past. With “Two on Tap,” singers and dancers Melissa Giattino and Ron DeStefano add a freshly contemporary take that is as enchanting as it is energetic. A charming pair of performers, Giattino and DeStefano create a song-and-dance act that may have roots as deep as vaudeville, but together they add a kinetic flair that gives it a lively currency. The resulting show is simply adorable. From the sizzling opening of “I Got Rhythm, the pair showed throughout the 80-minute show that they certainly do – rhythm, style, humor and a Broadway flair left the audience elated. That reaction is, perhaps, surprising. It’s fair to ask whether, outside of a gathering of aficionados, a tap dancing act could maintain an audience’s interest beyond a brief handful of numbers. However, in creating their own choreography, DeStefano and Giattino are respectful of the traditions of their form, while also employing new blends of the tap dancer’s vocabulary. The results showcase the wide-range of the style, from galloping riffs to sweeping brushes, which gives the show its vital variety. Time steps are in perfect synchronization with the tempos of the songs. Their dance accompanying the jazz standard “Just You, Just Me,” for example, displayed Giattino and DeStefano’s ability to create distinct tones with their taps, which actually sounded on pitch with the singing. Tight coordination and razor-sharp precision are consistent highlights of their dancing. The steady smiles may tempt the audience into believing it’s done with ease, but their work is not effortless. The sheer athleticism and physicality of the dancing dazzles, while showing a breathtaking and unyielding stamina. In addition, both are accomplished Broadway performers whose vocal abilities match their dancing talents. An attractive couple who could’ve stepped out of a

1940s silver screen, Giattino and DeStefano also share a splendid chemistry on stage and those personalities create a sweet rapport with the audience. As singers, they employ some wonderful arrangements that bring a real freshness to the songs – ranging from the classic standards to century-old vaudeville ditties. One of the best renditions was a revision of the ’30s Big Band standard “The Glory of Love,” sung at a rat-a-tat-tat pace with triple the number of rhymes added within the lyrics. It just sparkled. A similarly playful take on Dorothy Fields’ lyrics to “On the Sunny Side of the Street” had a swinging bounce. Allowing for costume changes, each performer has solo moments that also please. DeStefano's virile dancing shined with “Just in Time.” And in a still moment, his rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” put full focus on his pleasing and ringing tenor voice. Giattino, a former Radio City Music Hall Rockette, also was featured in the Broadway revival of “42nd St.” In a magnificent moment of multimedia theater, she was joined – via video – by the entire cast of the dancing musical, while she matched their dancing step for fiery step. Vocally, her “I Don’t Know Enough About You” offered sultry appeal. Of course, romance is also on tap with songs from the periods covered. Sweetly touching moments were on display with “My Romance,” one of the best songs Rodgers and Hart wrote, and the sheer exhilaration of love burst forth in fresh, bubbly renditions of such old vaudeville numbers as “Wild About Harry” and “If You Knew Susie.” A number of songs one would expect are performed and danced – “Fascinating Rhythm,” “Crazy for You” and the inevitable “Tea for Two” – but they also include some comic numbers and interpretations of songs done with tongue firmly in cheek. I won’t spoil the spontaneity of the laughs by revealing any more. Continuing a string of successful shows, the [National World War II Museum’s] Stage Door Canteen has thoroughly resurrected the elegance and fun of the classic supper club, a quality that is matched by the timeless delights of “Two on Tap.”

FULL REVIEW DELTA COUNTY INDEPENDENT (Delta, CO) ‘Two on Tap,’ or one plus one is three By Charlie Huff October 30, 2012 On Monday evening, Oct. 29, we once again were treated to a theatrical performance at the Delta Performing Arts Center sponsored by the Delta-Montrose Community Concert Association (DMCCA). In a word, it could be simply described as delightful — absolutely delightful! The name of the trio, as I must call it, is "Two on Tap" which refers to Ron DeStefano and his "best friend" dance partner, Melissa Giattino, the two featured and highly talented and vivacious performers whose voices blend as one as they sing and tap dance to the great music and dance styles of the early years of the last century. However, their memorable performance of some of the greatest American song and dance routines of our times would hardly have been possible without the third member of their team, David Snyder, their piano accompanist and "music director" who is an extremely talented and accomplished pianist, singer, composer, and arranger in his own right. He provided all the piano accompaniment and other music needed to support the absolutely stunning performance of Ron and Melissa. Their singing and tap dancing literally turned the clock back to a simpler time when men strove to be gentlemen and women loved being ladies, a time when we were encouraged to walk "On the Sunny Side of the Street," when we all knew "The Glory of Love," the sweetness of "Love Letters," and that when times were difficult, "You'll Never Walk Alone." And there we were, being genuinely entertained and refreshed by these three, a beautiful young lady and two handsome young gentlemen who deeply appreciated and enjoyed sharing their enthusiasm for the simplicity, beauty, romance, and virtues of a bygone era that had so much warm spirit and vitality to offer. Their performance was like a drink of cool, clear water in the midst of what so often seems in present times to be a cultural drought devoid of romance and lofty motives of the heart. As I noted in the beginning, it was truly a delightsome experience for all in attendance as was demonstrated by the abundant applause throughout the evening's show. Indeed, I would venture to say that all who made the effort to be there were richly rewarded and had their spirits lifted high.
