ABOUT THE MASTERCLASS Carlos Gallardo, a strong supporter of new filmmaking talent, is coming to the UK for his first ever film masterclass,

sharing his knowledge and expertise with the next generation of aspiring filmmakers.

In association with UK independent film production company Intense Productions Ltd, this is an intensive 1-day masterclass designed to equip filmmakers with the knowledge to launch, produce and distribute their own successful

feature film. Hollywood Actor and Producer Carlos Gallardo starred in and produced the critically acclaimed and award winning film ‘El Mariachi’ for a budget of $7,000 in his home town of Ciudad Acuña, Mexico which marked the feature directorial debut of his long-time friend, Robert Rodriguez. Acquired by the US Studio Columbia Pictures, ‘El Mariachi’

went on to win the prestigious Audience Award at Sundance in 1993 and launched the careers of both Gallardo and Rodriguez in Hollywood. Together they went on to produce the hugely successful box office hits ‘Desperado’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico’.

Often quoted as a film which re-defined the Independent film industry, ‘El Mariachi’ entered the books of cinema history... and inspired a generation of filmmakers. Now you have the opportunity to hear and learn from Carlos Gallardo.

WHAT THE MASTERCLASS COVERS The masterclass will cover: screen writing, raising finance, casting, production, post production, sales and distribution, panel discussions, Q&A session, along with case studies of commercially successful independent productions that have

raised finance, secured talent, as well as securing international sales and worldwide distribution.

Speaking alongside Actor & Producer Carlos Gallardo is Director & Producer Chee Keong Cheung of Intense Productions & Intense Distribution, and Producer Mark Strange, who will each will share their unique approaches to making their first independent features.

Those in attendance will have the opportunity to gain industry secrets on how to develop, produce, market and promote their work, and the chance to network with some of the industry’s most innovative and skilful talent.

You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions about your own feature project and receive feedback from Carlos Gallardo.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS CARLOS GALLARDO - Actor/Producer

Born in Acuña, Mexico, Gallardo’s first taste of fame came with the feature film ‘El Mariachi’, which he co-wrote, starred in and produced, and was the directorial feature debut of his close friend, Robert Rodriguez. A critically acclaimed film, it was renowned for costing only $7,000 to make, and went on to win the prestigious Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 1993. The Spanish language film was shot with a local cast in the northern Mexican border town of Ciudad Acuña, the home town of leading actor and producer Carlos. The film was originally intended for the Mexican home video market, but executives at Columbia Pictures liked the film so much that they bought the American distribution rights.

Following his success with ‘El Mariachi’, Carlos proceeded to work as an actor and co-producer on the film which would help launch the English language careers of Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas, ‘Desperado’. This movie opened the door to many new projects, including ‘Bravo’ and ‘Single Action’, in which Carlos filled the roles of producer, director, actor and screenwriter.

Carlos went on to be one of the producers of the third film in the trilogy ‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico’, featuring Johnny Depp, Willem Defoe, Enrique Iglesias, Eva Mendez, Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas. The Mariachi trilogy franchise has grossed over $157 million worldwide.

In 2007, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognised Carlos’ long time work as a minority filmmaker and honoured him with the award ‘Oscar Night America’, a recognition from the Academy as a Latino filmmaker.

Carlos also starred in the lead role in ‘Curandero’, written and produced by Robert Rodriguez and directed by Eduardo Rodriguez. He also played a cameo role for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s action horror ‘Planet Terror’ in 2007. His other recent credits include the drama ‘Jazzed up Hoodlums’, directed by new up and coming talent, Stephen Marsh, action horror ‘Dead Hooker in a Trunk’ from the Soska Sisters, and the short futuristic western ‘The Price.’




In 2012, ‘El Mariachi’ was given the prestigious honour of being named by the US Library of Congress as one of only 25 films to be preserved as part of the National Film Registry, the world’s largest archive of film, TV and sound recordings.

CHEE KEONG CHEUNG - Producer/Director/Writer/Distributor Chee Keong Cheung is a Writer/Director/Producer and MD of Intense Productions and Intense Distribution. Cheung has worked with some of the industry’s most established names, including legendary two time Academy Award Winning Cinematographer, Jack Cardiff OBE (‘The African Queen’, ‘Black Narcissus’), and the acclaimed late British film producer and Former Vice President of 20th century Fox, Tim Hampton (‘Aliens’,‘Frantic’, ‘Don’t Look Now’). Cheung wrote, directed and produced the indie action films ‘12’ and ‘Bodyguard: A New Beginning’ released by Lionsgate in North America and Sony Pictures in France.

Cheung’s Intense Productions is currently in development on the action/horror film ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ slated for production in 2014 and is Executive Produced by Kevin Eastman (Co-creator of ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’) and Carlos Gallardo (‘El Mariachi’, ‘Desperado’). Cheung recently launched Intense Distribution a new division of his Intense Productions entity and released the critically acclaimed horror/ thriller, ‘Banshee Chapter’ Executive Produced by Zachary Quinto’s (‘Star Trek’, ‘Heroes’) Before the Door Pictures (‘All is Lost’, ‘Margin Call’).

MARK STRANGE - Actor/Producer Mark Strange is a hugely talented actor, producer and fight choreographer with over ten years’ experience in the film and TV industry.

Having appeared in ‘Twins Effect’ (working under action director Donnie Yen) and ‘The Medallion’ (alongside Jackie Chan), Mark also landed a role in ‘Batman Begins’ and played the lead in

‘Displaced’ (in addition to producing the film) a British action film featuring Sir Ian McKellen (‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘X-Men’). Continuing this success, Mark went on to co-produce and star in the critically acclaimed British action film ‘12’, directed by Chee Keong Cheung, which also featured




Danny John-Jules (‘Red Dwarf’, ‘Blade II’ and Joey Ansah (‘The Boume Ultimatum’). Released worldwide, the film was praised for its hard hitting, realistic fights and was also the recipient of a prestigious Accolade Award for best stunts.

Mark followed this by co-producing and co-starring in ‘Bodyguard: A New Beginning’, a gritty action-drama shot in the UK and Hong Kong and featuring a star cast of movie legends, including Richard Ng (Sammo Hung’s ‘Winners and Sinners’) and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (‘Mortal Kombat’). Recently, Mark featured in the action-drama ‘Best Laid Plans’ alongside Stephen Graham (‘Snatch’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (‘GI Joe: Rise Of The Cobra’), and was brought on board to choreograph the action of the horror sequel, ‘World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries’ and also the critically acclaimed horror ‘The Thompsons’ directed by the Butcher Brothers (‘The Hamiltons’).
