Sinceitsestablishmentin2007theCatskillMountainFoundation’sPianoPerformancemuseumhassharedawealthofinformationonthehistoryofpianos.ThemuseumislocatedintheDoctorowCenterfortheArtsRte23A,VillageofHunter,NYTheCMFPianoPerformanceMuseumfeaturestheStevenE.GreensteinCollection,aone-of-a-kindcollectionofhistoricpianosandmusicalartifactsthatofferauniqueinsightintothedevelopmentofpianosinEuropeandAmericanoverthepastfourcenturies.

FeaturedArtifacts EarlyandmodernkeyboardinstrumentsincludeEuropeanhistoricpianosaswellasAmericanpianosbuiltinthe18thand19thcenturies.Thepianosaredisplayedtodemonstratethedevelopmentoftheinstrumentfromsmallpianofortebuiltforuseinprivatehomesandsalonstothemodernpianobuiltforlargeconcerthalls.Thecollectionincludescloseto20fascinatinginstrumentsincludingaMuzioClementiSquareForetepianoca.1802-1805,aca.1821-1826GeibwithacabinetbuiltbythefamousAmericancabinet-maker,DuncanPhyfe,an1865SteinwayCivilWarSquareGrandandaChopin-eraJohnBroadwood.TuningToolsandToolkits,some200yearsold,leather-wrappedwithaplaceforeachtool;tuningforks,hammers—everythingthatwouldallowatechniciantobringapianobacktomaximumperformancestandards.TheAmericanPianoExperienceincludesAmericancontributionstothedevelopmentofthepianoandpianomusic.ThecollectionincludesaBoardmanandGreyownedbyfamousjazzpianist,SirRolandHanna,onloanfromhiswife,Ms.RamonaHanna.

PianosandtheWhiteHouse:AlmostallAmericanpresidentshavehadpianosattheWhiteHouse,fromGeorgeWashingtonthroughtoday.Thecollectionincludesan1851Chickering,ofthesamestyleasthepianointheLincolnWhiteHouse.

PianoShawls:Adisplayofbeautiful,one-of-a-kindhand-embroideredsilkthrowsthatwerepopularadornmentsofpianosinpeople'shomesinthe19thcentury.PianoandComposerTimelineallowsgueststomatchpianodevelopmentthroughthe18th,19thand20thcenturieswiththecomposerswhoperformedonlikeinstruments.PianoManufacturing:Adisplayofantiquecatalogs,magazinearticlesandsalesmen'sminiaturepianoactions.
