Below we have some information on our recent purchase:Sepoy x Dance with Her Colt

He was inspected on the farm and at that stage I’m informed the vendor was thinking he was a $300,000 to $350,000 colt. He was beautifully balanced and walked “right through himself” and with real purpose and power. Everyone remembers what a freak Sepoy was but importantly here the dam was a machine winning 12 races and over $760,000 in prize-money she was always super consistent and versatile winning from 1400m to 2450m. This is the first foal and this is the type of family we like as it’s a strong winning family.

The 2nd Dam won 7 races and 3 of the 4 she had to race won races and likewise in the 3rd Dam all 4 of hers to race won. You will notice all through the first 3 generations that the families go early but then train on and get over ground and we believe this fellow has the physical attributes to get up and run pre-Christmas in a effort to get him into Next Years Magic Millions race.

SALE WEEK LUCK: you some times need some luck in this game and there is no doubt we had luck in this purchase. As discussed Brian from the farm said last year this horse would have sailed through the $300,000 mark and that was the expectation prior to arriving on the coast . However all week the talk was Sepoy was struggling and basically the buyers didn’t want them. However I can remember going to the sales in the previous few years and “they” said Not A Single Doubt was struggling- “they said” Fastnet Rock horses couldn’t gallop.

I can repeat a heap of similar instances where the market became irrational for no reason. Last year the average price of the 76 Sepoy colts sold was $325,000 !!. With this concern lingering one farm actually withdrew their total lot of Sepoy offerings and has instead decided to sell them at Easter. The statistics don’t support the market consensus though and this is where we have got lucky. If you remember Sepoy himself – at the same stage of the season he himself had had just 1 run in which he won. He was then put away for the following year. If we look at Sepoy as a sire to date he has had just 7 runners – yet he has had 6 place gettors and they have averaged $14,400 per start- indicating the ones that have placed have earnt their money in city class races- however because from just 7 runners he hasn’t had a winner the market has gone cold- which is completely ludicrous. With this in mind the vendor couldn’t afford to bring him home and we managed to find one of 2 absolute bargains. He had perfect ex-rays.

He has good angulation of the hip and pelvis and this helps him be athletic and a smooth mover

His Shoulder is perfect angle and shape.

His gullet or airway was huge- you could put your whole hand in his airway and whilst this photo doesn’t highlight it – the horse has very large nostrils to allow the air in

As you can see his not a big hulking colt but he is perfectly balanced in every area . He has nice small pasterns, good feet and as you can see in the video (click here) he moves amazing well.

Not being a big heavy colt and having displayed a lovely attitude we think he can keep his “crown jewels” until he proves otherwise and this is the exact type of horse who can get up and run early as physically he has all the right attributes for early speed.

What this system tells us is that without the correct confirmation and ‘leavers” it’s not physically possible for athletes to perform at an optimum level unless you first have the right tools and physical make up. For example statistically it’s just about impossible for a 5ft white man with extra short arms to play professional Basketball in the US. Not to say that 5ft players are not good or can’t make the league it’s just statistically they don’t perform at the level coaches require. Using this system we attempt to weed out the horses who don’t psychically move in a way that best utilises there limbs and body. The freak 1 in 1 million horse we are not looking for. We want the horses that give us the best chance in all areas

Once we identify this we then look at the horses and how they use their body’s and tools. For example we all know that a horse gets most of his propulsion from his rear end and as part of the process we run each breeze up under a system we analyse for example the horse’s Hip movements and angulation and exactly where the horses are pushing from. For example you don’t want a race horse who is pushing off from behind himself as he loses a lot of his power and you want to see them push off from underneath their own body where they have the most benefit from their hips and power.

For example it stands to reason two different horses with the same stride length, style and turnover rate are not going to run exactly the same time- but the horse that best utilises its body in propelling itself should always finish in front. We use this system extensively when buying our European horses and we find it weeds out a lot of horses that to the eye are impressive but don’t have the stats or data behind them to perform up to our expectations. Of course this system is not fool proof as nothing has been developed to test a horses will or heart and determination- however it’s a system that helps us avoid a lot of slow horses and helps backup what the eye might detect or miss On this system our colt was a flying pass and rated 55 which is in the top 15% of all horses.


We say this as whilst we have tried to get all the percentages in our favour its best to plan for the worst and hope for the best. The Asian market is growing hugely and there always exists a demand for tried horses that are sound. Should he not develop into the city class horse we are seeking then if he wins a race or a trial then these types sell between $50k to $500k depending on how much talent they show?

ONE FACTOR WE HAVEN’T HIGHLIGHTED IS WE EMPLOY A UNIQUE “BIOMECHANICAL” SYSTEM AND CHECK LIST THAT IS VERY SIMILAR TO WHAT IS USED BY THE PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL AND BASKETBALL SCOUTS IN THE US.

BASICALLY BEING A COLT OR GELDING WE HAVE THE OPTION WHEN HE HAS FULLY MATURED TO ASSESS HIM AND IF KRIS LEES DETERMINES THAT HE IS NOT GOING TO MAKE SATURDAY RACING WE CAN ON SELL HIM.

Costings

We are completely different in that we actually put our own money into these offers we offer and WE RACE THEM WITH YOU normally buying a 10%

share just depending on how we are travelling financially. We are prepared to put our money into backing our judgement. We don’t charge a ridiculous mark ups ( our mark up is just 12.5%) – we don’t charge management fees- we have also sourced the best breakers for the best prices all in effort to make it as affordable as possible.

We don’t put mark up on these costs but simple as we are going to be partners we simple pass them on for what we are charged. As partners we are very upfront and transparent and fully admit we don’t want to race slow horses- if they are not midweek or better than we don’t want them and that’s why as above we have put an exit strategy in place so its all very clear. We also have a “ no dickhead policy “ and we want to like and be friends with the people we race- everyone gets a say whether right or wrong or if we agree or not but we employ trainers that we trust and importantly are not rip off

merchants but also can get the job done and will basically let them run the show. Both Kris Lees and Darren Weir finished top 10 in Australia last year and both guys are down to earth and have never received the blue bloods of the breeding industry so for them to finish and compete with the richest stables in the land is a credit to their horsemanship ability.

We work on the majority rules voting system in all aspects to the horse and simple if you want to tell the trainer how to train or you want to be in charge then to be frank we are not the people for you. We don’t have fancy agreements and contracts that dictate what will and won’t happen in the syndicate as we are proud to say our existing group of owners are all good people and going by the amount of multiple purchases and rebuys are happy with the current set up and service we provide. This is meant to be a fun experience and enjoyed amongst people with like-minded goals . You will be bombarded with updates and information about your horse when they start to get serious into their work and we are always available to have a chat .

WE HAVE LONG HELD THE VIEW THAT MOST OF OUR COMPETITORS HAVE ADOPTED A ‘SCATTERED’ APPROACH, ONLY BUYING HORSES BY STALLIONS THAT THEY REGARD ‘SEXY’ AND THEREFORE EASY TO SELL AND THEN OUR COMPETITORS LOOK TO SELL A 100% OF THE HORSE.

There is no extra charges if the horse wins a big race or prize-money. We don’t on pass things like accommodation,meals, our biomechanics testing, flights or failed vetting of horses- nor our external expert charges.

Australian Bloodstock oppose management fees and advertising the yearling shares at your expense. These are costs that we will absorb. However we are in business and believe the 12.5% commission we charge is fair for our time and expertise given the homework that was put in over the last few months.

WE HAVE TRIED TO KEEP THE COSTS TO A MINIMUM WITH OUR COMMISSION FOR OUR TIME, WHICH INCLUDES THE MANAGEMENT OF THE HORSE FOR ITS ENTIRE RACING LIFE.
