Roads of national significance www.nzta.govt.nz/basin-bridge The Basin Bridge project About the Basin Bridge project The Basin Bridge project will provide significant improvements to the state highway and local road networks at or around the Basin Reserve. By separating east-west from north-south traffic, the NZTA can provide a solution that benefits Wellington City’s accessibility, enhances enjoyment of the local area and supports needed improvements to the state highway and local roads. What does the project provide? To cater for westbound state highway traffic, a new bridge is proposed between Paterson and Buckle Streets that goes around the northern side of the Basin Reserve. The bridge is located approximately 20 metres north of the Basin Reserve entrance, is 265m long, up to 12 metres wide and a maximum of eight metres above the ground. Providing two westbound traffic lanes, the bridge will shift approximately 20,000 vehicles per day of east to west state highway traffic from existing roads at the Basin Reserve. The project also provides a terraced garden entrance to the National War Memorial Park, including access paths between the Park and Kent/Cambridge Terrace. Under the proposed bridge structure, a new commercial building would be built at the corner of Kent Terrace and Ellice Street. Also included in the project is a shared pedestrian and cycleway bridge between Paterson and Buckle Streets, attached to the northern side of the bridge. This shared path will complete the separate walking and cycling route between Mount Victoria and Willis Street. Other planned improvements The Basin Bridge project will involve improvements to the local road network. Improvements include: Changes to the intersection of Kent/Cambridge Terrace with Pirie Street to provide a better entry and exit point to the State Highway for Mt Victoria traffic. Peak hour clearways on Vivian Street between Tory Street and Kent/Cambridge Terrace to provide better peak hour traffic movements on the State Highway and for Mt Victoria Traffic. At Ellice, Dufferin and Rugby Streets, changes will be made to the road layout to help the flow of traffic and to make the area more pedestrian and public transport-friendly, particularly for bus pick-ups and drop-offs associated with St Mark’s School and Wellington College. The St Joseph’s Church carpark will be reconfigured and landscaped. Discussions are ongoing with the Church to address its parking needs. A new boulevard, shared path and bridge can be seen in this view from the corner of Hania Street facing east towards St Joseph’s Church. A new entrance plaza in front of the Basin Reserve at Kent/Cambridge Terrace is part of the proposal to integrate the project with its surrounding environment. Looking at the corner of Kent/Cambridge Terraces to the east, a new commercial building and a green trellis are key features of the Basin Bridge project.

About the Basin Bridge project

The Basin Bridge project will provide signifi cant

improvements to the state highway and local

road networks at or around the Basin Reserve.

By separating east-west from north-south

traffi c, the NZTA can provide a solution that

benefi ts Wellington City’s accessibility, enhances

enjoyment of the local area and supports needed

improvements to the state highway and local roads.

What does the project provide? To cater for westbound state highway traffi c, a new bridge is proposed between Paterson and Buckle Streets that goes around the northern side of the Basin Reserve.

The bridge is located approximately 20 metres north of the Basin Reserve entrance, is 265m long, up to 12 metres wide and a maximum of eight metres above the ground.

Providing two westbound traffi c lanes, the bridge will shift approximately 20,000 vehicles per day of east to west state highway traffi c from existing roads at the Basin Reserve.

Other planned improvementsThe Basin Bridge project will involve improvements to the local road network. Improvements include:

• Changes to the intersection of Kent/Cambridge Terrace with Pirie Street to provide a better entry and exit point to the State Highway for Mt Victoria traffi c.

• Peak hour clearways on Vivian Street between Tory Street and Kent/Cambridge Terrace to provide better peak hour traffi c movements on the State Highway and for Mt Victoria Traffi c.

At Ellice, Duff erin and Rugby Streets, changes will be made to the road layout to help the fl ow of traffi c and to make the area more pedestrian and public transport-friendly, particularly for bus pick-ups and drop-off s associated with St Mark’s School and Wellington College.

The St Joseph’s Church carpark will be reconfi gured and landscaped.
