About the AuthorsDr. Larson and Dr. Boswell began writing together in 1992. Since that time they have authored

over two dozen textbooks. In their collaboration, Ron is primarily responsible for the pupil edition while Laurie is primarily responsible for the teaching edition of each text.

Ron Larson, Ph.D. is well known as the lead author of a comprehensive program for mathematics that spans middle school, high school, and college courses. He is a professor of mathematics at Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, where he has taught since receiving his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado. Dr. Larson’s numerous professional activities keep him in constant touch with the needs of students, teachers, and supervisors.

Laurie Boswell, Ed.D. is the Head of School and a mathematics teacher at the Riverside School in Lyndondale, Vermont. She received her Ed.D. from the University of Vermont. Dr. Boswell is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence inMathematics Teaching and has taught math to students at all levels from elementary through college. Dr. Boswell was a Tandy Technology Scholar and served on the NCTM Board of Directors from 2002 to 2005. She currently serves on the board of NSCM and is a popular national speaker.

Big Ideas Math is pleased to introduce a new high school program comprised of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, developed for the Common Core State Standards and using

the Standards for Mathematical Practice as its foundation. Big Ideas Math has been systematically developed using learning and instructional theory to ensure the quality of instruction. Students gain a deeper understanding of math concepts by narrowing their focus to fewer topics at each grade level. Students master content through inductive reasoning opportunities, engaging activities that provide

deeper understanding, concise stepped-out examples, rich thought-provoking exercises, and a continual development of what has been previously taught. The unique teaching editions provide teachers

with complete instructional support from master teacher Laurie Boswell.

Program Philosophy: Rigor and Balance

Research shows that students benefit from a program that includes equal exposure to discovery learning and direct instruction. By beginning each lesson with an inquiry-based Exploration, Big Ideas Math allows students to delve into the Core Concepts of the lesson. Students question, explain, and persevere as they seek to answer the Essential Question of the lesson that guides students’ learning and encourages conceptual understanding.

These rich Explorations are followed by direct instruction lessons, allowing for procedural fluency, modeling, and the opportunity to use clear, precise mathematical language.

Big Ideas Math also realizes that students will be faced with mathematical quandaries outside of the confines of the classroom. The Big Ideas Math series provides students and educators with numerous real-life applications and examples through which students become more comfortable applying the mathematical concepts they have learned in class to scenarios they are likely to encounter in their lives.

Focus and Coherence through Embedded Mathematical Practices

The Mathematical Practices demand higher-order thinking. The Big Ideas Math program encourages this through robust Explorations and Exercises. Students are challenged beyond basic memorization as they engage in solving problems and discussing the practices used in the process. Students are required to construct viable arguments and critique their own reasoning as well as the reasoning of others. Big Ideas Math also provides students with opportunities to develop the habits of mind that students are required to demonstrate to be successful on standardized assessments.

Embedded Mathematical Practices and grade-level content promote greater understanding of how mathematical concepts are connected to each other and to real-life scenarios. The Big Ideas Math program helps turn mathematical learning into an engaging and meaningful way to see and explore the real world.

Continuous Preparation for High-Stakes Testing

ExercisesRigorous Exercises present problems in a variety of formats to familiarize students with thinking about mathematical concepts from different perspectives.

Exercises include:

•  Analyzing Relationships  •  Justifying Steps

•  Error Analysis  •  Making an Argument

•  Modeling with Mathematics  •  Mathematical Connections

•  Using Structure  •  Analyzing Equations

The Big Ideas Dynamic Assessment and Progress Monitoring Tool Educators can utilize the Assessment and Progress Monitoring Tool’s adaptive testing features and also develop additional practice problem sets directly correlated to a Common Core State Standard or Big Ideas Math lesson.

Quizzes and TestsBig Ideas Math provides a number of customizable Quizzes and Tests. The rich problem sets allow educators to assess their students’ progress and ensure all students are where they need to be, or provide remediation or enrichment as necessary.

Standards AssessmentsThe questions found in the Big Ideas Math Standards Assessments are in formats commonly encountered on high-stakes tests. These assessments were specifically designed to help students prepare for and become more confident while taking standardized tests.

Online Test PracticeThe Big Ideas Math website features auto-graded self assessments, quizzes, tests, and extra practice problems.

Performance TasksThe Big Ideas Math program features Performance Tasks for every chapter in the series. These require students to use higher-order thinking and persevere while working through to complete each task. Each Performance Task encompasses multiple Common Core State Standards to provide students with additional opportunities to connect mathematical concepts to each other.

Assessment Book The Big Ideas Math Assessment Book features Alternative Assessment options for each Big Ideas Math Chapter Test. Educators also have the option to assign Alternative Assessments as additional practice problem sets.
