ABOUT THE ARTIST LOU MCCALL Lou McCall is from New Mexico and knows it well. She grew up in Farmington, NM, and has lived in Albuquerque, Silver City, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, and the village of Monticello. In 2016 she moved with her partner, Peter to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, near Taos. Lou attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she studied print making and animation. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and did graduate work in animation and filmmaking. She earned a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Multicultural Education from Western New Mexico University, taught drawing at WNMU and teaches yoga and meditation. A lifelong artist, writer and moving imagist, she is devoted to supporting creativity in all its forms. Lou directed the award-winning Media l0l program, teaching video production, media and communications to at-risk youth in Gallup, NM. Lou’s art and films have been shown in various venues, collections, festivals and publications throughout the U.S., Mexico, Europe and Japan. Lou is an environmental and social activist and founding member of Southwest Energy Alliance and the post-industrial thinktank, PixelCircus. Lou is a published writer, columnist and editor and her ebook, Meditation for Everyone is available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Lou’s NeoMimbreno images have been in circulation in the form of notecards and prints for several decades. Over a millennium ago, the Mimbres Indians of Southwestern New Mexico left a legacy of pictorial pottery that were cartoon depictions of their daily lives. Where the Mimbrenos painted wolves on their black and white pottery, Lou substitutes chihuahuas with sweaters. Bicycles, VW Bugs and ’57 Chevy trucks are Lou’s 21 st Century update to the work of the Mimbreno. Lou’s NeoMimbreno notecards are shown in numerous southwestern museums and gift shops. Lou continues to expand her design line and is currently working on a new collection of NeoMimbreno images. Lou lives a relaxed, rural lifestyle with Peter and enjoys writing, community, kids, grandkids, organic food, reading, yoga, sci-fi and Vajrayana Buddhism.
