Description:l Timeless arts to enhance rehabPositioning of extremities and joints for safe and beneficial yoga practice is also key for therapeutic exercises in rehabilitation. Yoga will help therapists utilize optimal cues to facilitate movement, strength, posture, and balance. You know the anatomy so this course will enable you to apply more of it to maximize your outcomes. Remember, it’s our verbal cues, modifications, manual contacts, and use of props that produce optimal results and demonstrate skilled intervention!

This active, lab-based course will be both challenging and relaxing, simple and complex. It is appropriate for therapists in any setting and content is applicable to patients of all ages, diagnosis groups, and impairments.

Presenter:l Janet Fender, RYTJanet has been involved in the wellness industry for over 16 years and has been teaching yoga for over 7 years. Her main focus is on structural alignment to create a safe environment that allows students to increase their awareness of the incredible and infinite possibilities the mind-body connection creates. Janet has been trained in different styles of yoga and relies on Iyengar, alignment and prop based techniques, to insure that students stay structurally sound to avoid injury, to allow the student better access to poses, and to get the most benefit from each pose.

Sheryl Poremba, PT, CCMAlthough still in the novice ranks for yoga, Sheryl has been incorporating Hatha and Iyengar techniques into her physical therapy practice since 2009. She is continually impressed at the benefits of yoga-based interventions and cues for the majority of her patients. Yoga is becoming a significant tool for her physical examination, functional assessment, and prescription of therapeutic exercises—even with 25+ years of clinical experience.

Shoulder CerVICAl SPIne

Description:lDuring these separate courses, participants will review the applicable anatomy in depth as it applies to everyday practice. Participants will be able to confidently evaluate and treat a cervical or shoulder disorder, within the scope of their license, using current evidence. Correctly identifying patients that are appropriate for physical and/or occupational therapy, and screening for non-musculoskeletal disorders that warrant a medical referral will be reviewed. A review of common medical diagnoses that manifest with neuromusculoskeletal issues will be discussed to prepare participants for direct access situations.

Common cervical or shoulder disorders seen in physical and/or occupational therapy practice will be analyzed for proper evaluation and treatment integrating current evidence as it applies. Participants will be able to be confidently subcategorize patients into a treatment classification based on a patients clinic presentation. Once sub-grouped, participants will be able to apply appropriate hands-on techniques and skilled exercise prescription to expedite patient recovery. In the cervical spine course, focus will also be on lesion diagnosis of patients presenting as cervical pain with radicular/referred pain.
