English 110 Objective

• A more sophisticated understanding of the relationship of purpose, audience, and voice, and an awareness that writing expectations and conventions vary within the academy and in professional and public discourse.

Project DescriptionMany of our conceptions, or common-sense

understandings, of writing are actually misconceptions that do not hold up under close scrutiny. My objective in this project was to analyze the construct of the term y’all. As an avid user of the term, I wanted to analyze why the term is generally unaccepted.

My essay, What’s the Problem, Y’all?, argues whether the term y’all is rejected because it is a celebrated regionalism or an informal contraction. Because y’all is a contraction, one can assume the term is rejected because it is a blunder in formal writing, not, as some would think, because it is a Southernism.

Although the term y’all is making progress in expanding into other regions, it still has a long road ahead in becoming “socially acceptable.” Due to the influence media has on our lives, the term y’all must inundate the media in order to become an acknowledged term.

Objective Met √What’s the Problem, Y’all? argues whether

the term y’all is acceptable. The essay also addresses what environments are most appropriate for the term to be used and why. Because y’all is a combination of two words, it should be regarded as any other contraction. As the generally accepted rule for contractions, they should be spelt out in formal writing.

The intended audience of this paper is my fellow classmates and professors at Elon University. My goal of this paper was to mimic the writing styles of the articles in our class textbook Writing About Writing. The purpose of this paper is to bolster the reasoning behind using the term y’all.

Lessons Learned: Reflection

As my first paper in English 110, this project served as a huge learning experience because it taught me how to use my sources persuasively. After reading Chapter 1 in Writing About Writing, I applied what I had read in the text to my own writing. Rather than regurgitating facts from a textbook, I believe my paper illuminates the difference between slopping facts on a page and using sources to present your findings in an argumentative fashion.

I chose this topic because it was very personable. The results of this project have fortified my justification for using the term y’all. Subsequent to completing this project, I am confident in using the term in daily conversation and informal writing. Also, I believe those who read the composition What’s the Problem, Y’all? will have a better understanding of its use.
