WidgetsWhat is a widget?

In computing, a web widget is a software widget for the web. It's a small application with limited functionality that can be installed and executed within a web page by an end user. A widget has the role of a transient or auxiliary application, meaning that it just occupies a portion of a webpage and does something useful with information fetched from other websites and displayed in place.

Widgets often take the form of on-screen devices such as clocks, event countdowns, auction-tickers, stock market tickers, flight arrival information, daily weather etc.

Widgets in Wordpress

You theme will have designated widget areas. This might be in the sidebar, in the footer, or in both of these areas.

You might have multiple widget areas in one place.

Accessing widget control on the Wordpress dashboard:

The widget areas available to you.

The widgets you can choose from

Activating widgets is a drag and drop system

Widgets that are particularly useful:

• Social media widgets

• The ‘Text’ widget – you can use this embed codes to embed all sorts of things

• ‘Categories’ of posts – if you are doing a blog

• ‘Search’ widget – allows a user to search something on your site

Golden Rules of Widgets

• Widgets should add something to your site – if you don’t need it, don’t use it. You are allowed to leave your widget areas empty.

• Widgets should not distract too much from the main content of the site.

• Choosing dynamic widgets – widgets that will update and change themselves automatically (egTwitter feed) are the best kinds of widgets.
