Our Programmes
By encouraging creativity and participation across the whole spectrum of design, we aim to
stimulate exchange between the local and international design community and the public,
through a series of imaginative and unconventional initiatives channeling creative energies
from both street and studio.
HKAoD‟s unique form of public engagement encompasses large scale events such as Detour,
the organization‟s flagship annual programme of events and exhibitions, to smaller public
platforms such as PechaKucha, a forum for emerging designers to meet, network and show
their work in public.
Creating future “Ambassadors of Design”, the organization also works with school children,
communicating the importance of design and encouraging exchange through popular
initiatives such as Brick by Brick and We Love My Chair.
Project Details: Detour
Detour aims to engage the general public and celebrate the creative aspects of Hong Kong.
Running parallel to Business of Design Week, it consists of a series of events and installations
that incorporate the most original, bold and stimulating ideas from both Hong Kong and
across the globe.
The programme runs for 17 days and is free to the public. Detour‟s purpose is to engage the
larger population. The installations, workshops and events give young, emerging design
talents a platform to share their work while providing opportunities for the public to learn and
be inspired. HKAoD believes that design, innovation and creativity are vital elements to any
culture, economy and society.
Main Events at Detour:
Designers Exchange
Design Mart
Feature Installation Each year HKAoD holds an open call for a proposal to create the most imaginative public space setting at the
Detour site.
WorkshopsPublic participation is an important aspect of Detour. Workshops lead by designers will be created for youth
and public participation. These workshops help develop the next generation by nurturing creativity and
independent thought.
Presentations and EventsSpecial presentations and events seek to actively empower the public through events that stimulate cultural
interactions and creative dialogue in unconventional and enjoyable ways.

Design Mart
Design Mart provides a platform for Hong Kong‟s emerging creative talents to promote their
original design works. An open fair as well as a showcase, Design Mart brings a mix of
established local designers and design graduates from the tertiary institutions.
Designer, artists and graduates from all creative disciplines are welcome to join – from fashion
and jewellery to home wares, lighting and graphic designs and beyond.
PechaKucha Night
PechaKucha Night is an event where people discuss the ins-and-outs of the design and arts
community. PechaKucha Night possesses one special characteristic – speakers must present
their ideas through a series of 20 slides, with 20 seconds allowed to expand on each slide –
the „twenty by twenty‟ format.
Since its founding in 2003 by Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture, PechaKucha Night
has been vastly successful worldwide, with more than 100 cities holding their own version of
the slide night. Not only does it provide the design community with a forum for discussion, it‟s
also a fun and entertaining event, bringing together the most creative and dynamic members
of the community.
By introducing PechaKucha Night to Hong Kong, HKAoD aim to increase the dialogue and
interaction between members of the local design and creative community. The event also
showcases talented work and individuals to the larger Hong Kong community.
The first PechaKucha night was March 2008. View more at www.pecha-kucha.org
Build Asia Brick by Brick
First started in 2007 by Art Asia Pacific magazine and the non-profit organisation People‟s
Architecture, “Building Asia Brick by Brick” is an initiative that is looking to the future, helping
develop the next generation by nurturing creativity and enhancing awareness about urban
development in today‟s youth.
In 2008, together with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, HKAoD started the
programme in Hong Kong utilising a tool that, when it comes to kids, is fail-safe: LEGO. Two-
hundred and forty students used more than 100,000 LEGO bricks to construct their ideal cities,
under the guidance of professors and students from the Architecture Department of Hong
Kong University, learning about design, structural concepts, creative problem solving and
teamwork. Led, taught and organized by Marisa Yiu and Eric Schuldenfrei and team of
teaching assistants for 2009; in 2008 Marisa Yiu, Eric Schuldenfrei, Dee Poon and Alan Lo with
various other members, architects and
HKAoD supporters.

We Love My Chair Project
In 2010, HKAOD collaborated with MUJI on a project that would give children a fun-filled
opportunity to express themselves. A series of workshops were held in schools for students to
pay and create with MUJI‟s DIY My Chair. The school workshops were planned with our
partner, Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups. Free workshops were also held at the
Detour site.
Along with the children‟s workshops, HKAOD recruited 31 Hong Kong designers and 20
Japanese designers to have a go at making their own DIY My chair. The chairs were on display
during Detour 2010.
Ambassadors‟ Ball
The Ambassadors‟ Ball is the charity fundraising gala event co-organised by Hong Kong
Ambassadors of Design and Hong Kong Design Centre. Funds raised at this annual event aid
in the joint mission of these organizations to support and promote the development of design
and innovation through community-based projects.
