The main hall of a mosque isa bare room. No furniture
is needed, as worshippers sit, stand, bow, and prostrate
directly on the floor, which isoften covered with large prayer
carpets. There may be a fewchairs or benches on which
to sit to assist elderly ordisabled worshippers.
There are no pictures or statues.Muslims believe that there can beno image of God. Instead, alongthe walls and pillars are inscriptions
of verses from the holy book of Islam, the Noble Qur'an, and also the Most
Beautiful Names of God.Splendid geometric and floral
patterns (known as arabesques)and calligraphic designs usuallyadorn the main doors, walls, and
pillars. Glass lamps of variouscolors are often hung from the
ceiling with chains to lightenthe interior of the mosque.

We remove our shoes and place themon the rack in the entryway out ofrespect for the place and to avoid
dirtying the carpets.
We greet people with Salam (saying:peace be upon you) when we enter
or leave the mosque. We enter quietly to avoid disturbing
other worshippers. As we walk inwe avoid passing in front
of a person praying, and then wesit or pray in any free space.
We keep the mosque clean, tidy, andpleasant smelling because it is the
House of God.
