Dear Traveler,
We are delighted to offer you this opportunity to discover wildlife sanctuaries of panama, costa rica, and ecuador, plus several outstanding archaeological sites of peru. Cruise in comfort aboard the elegant, 50-cabin Clelia II, a well-appointed ship with spacious, all-suite accommodations and attractive facilities.
Travel with a team of expert naturalists plus explorers club lecturer and host Dr. Nancy Wilkie (fN ’00), a very popular lecturer on many previous Explorers Club Travelers tours around the world. Learn about the ancient sites, cultures, landscapes, and wildlife we will encounter along the way.
transit the panama canal, marveling as Clelia II is raised and lowered 85 feet along its 48-mile channel. Learn about the ecology of four lush National parks, including Corcovado National park, Costa Rica; coiba island, one of Panama’s best protected marine national parks; and Machalilla National park, which protects one of Ecuador’s few remaining coastal habitats.
Explore pre-Columbian archaeological sites in Peru such as chan chan, capital of the Chimu culture; the Moche pyramids Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del Sol; pachacámac, the largest Peruvian coastal city and ceremonial center before the arrival of the Spaniards; and the reconstructed pre-Inca villa of puruchuco.
Other highlights include flying over the celebrated Nazca lines, immense designs “drawn” in the desert; plus an optional two-night excursion to cuzco and Machu picchu. You will also visit trujillo, lima, and arequipa, which feature Spanish colonial architecture and excellent museum collections.
I hope you will join Professor Willkie on this unusual and luxurious adventure, featuring a marvelous combination of natural and cultural wonders.
Sincerely,
Lorie Karnath (FI ’89)PresidentThe Explorers Club®
P.S. Clelia II has only 50 suites and this program is co-sponsored by other organizations, so to ensure your preferred choice of suite I urge you to contact the Explorers Club Travelers office today: call (800) 856-8951 or email us at [email protected].

His current research focuses on comparative political, economic, and educational reform in Latin America and Asia, and on U.S. foreign policy. He has written and edited academic studies and commentaries for most major U.S. and many foreign newspapers and has interviewed dozens of foreign presidents and prime ministers. He has conducted research in and traveled and worked extensively throughout Latin America, including Chile, Cuba, and El Salvador. Dr. Ratliff looks forward to sharing his knowledge on the politics, history, and international relations of Central and South America on this program.
patricia hostiuck, a popular and respected naturalist, began her career in Alaska as a ranger and since then has criss-crossed the state for the past 19 years, working as a naturalist and lecturer on expedition ships. Patty’s high-latitude work has also taken her from the Canadian High Arctic, Greenland, and Iceland to Svalbard, Norway, and Russia. Over 20 trips to Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego, and Patagonia make for a nearly pole-to-pole career! Well-versed in tropical as well as polar ecosystems, Patty also leads trips throughout the year to the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, Peru, Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, Belize, Honduras, the Caribbean, Baja California, northern Australia, and Borneo. She has led over 50 trips with Smithsonian Journeys. She has shared her expertise in mammals, birds, insects, and plants aboard ships and on the trail with thousands of fellow explorers in dozens of remote areas.
All lecturers are subject to change.
In an era of mega cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers, the Clelia II is a delightful alternative. More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Clelia II accommodates only 100 guests in 50 suites. Clelia II’s limited guest capacity, fine facilities, and distinctive style of operation attract like-minded travelers who return again and again to enjoy its custom-crafted itineraries and a style of cruising that is rarely found today. More than just a cruise, each voyage provides a comprehensive experience that reveals the singular aspects of the destinations. Aboard, a sense of community and a spirit of camaraderie prevail.
All of Clelia II’s suites face outside, providing views of the sea and landscape. Several have a private balcony. There are expansive open deck areas and other facilities, including a gym, spa, library, beauty salon, two lounges, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and an outdoor cafe. An elegant restaurant accommodates all guests in an open, unassigned seating. The cuisine is outstanding, and the overall service is efficient and friendly while unobtrusive. An elevator serves all decks. A resident physician attends a well-equipped infirmary.
Served by 65 seasoned officers and crew, Clelia II complies with the latest international safety regulations, including those of the U.S. Coast Guard, meets the requirements of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and is outfitted with the most current navigational and communications technology.
