DEFINITION:
"A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks"
Robot Institute of America, 1979

![Page 13: Abhinay](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051014/54b7b3ab4a7959c9688b464d/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Benefits of using Robots in Drug Discovery and Testing
•Faster, more consistent and more cost-effective•High degree of repeatability• Every parameter inthe process can be automatically monitored, recorded andverified•Thorough documentation is possible
13
![Page 14: Abhinay](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051014/54b7b3ab4a7959c9688b464d/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Types of Robots
There are three types of industrial robots most commonly usedin drug discovery and testing: (1) Cartesian (2) SCARA(selective compliance articulated robot arm) (3) Articulated.
14
![Page 15: Abhinay](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051014/54b7b3ab4a7959c9688b464d/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Cartesian Robots
15
![Page 16: Abhinay](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051014/54b7b3ab4a7959c9688b464d/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Chief advantage of Cartesian robots• Low in cost•Often incorporated into automation subsystems ormachines dedicated to a single purpose, such as assay testing
Disadvantage•although their restricted range of motion limits their usage.
16
![Page 17: Abhinay](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022051014/54b7b3ab4a7959c9688b464d/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
SCARA Robots
•Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm•The unique design of SCARAs gives them a high degree of rigidity•moves very fast and withprecise repeatability•SCARAs excel at high-speedpick-and-place and other material-handling tasks.
