Use of Human Tissue & DataScientists and doctors have been collecting and studying tissue and information about health and lifestyle for many years. This supply is invaluable in • advancing understanding of health and disease• advancing development of healthcare & treatments

through – basic and discovery research – development of innovative diagnosis and

treatments

What are BiobanksCollections of human biological material (and data)Types of biological material collections

– clinical - pathology archive, surplus surgical

– diagnostic – surplus blood, urine, biopsy– research – health surveys– Therapeutic – stem cells

(Patient or population based)

Biobank & Pathology

• There are several advantages to establish biobank managed by pathologist. Pathology’s role must be at the center of the biobankingprocess.

• This ensures that optimal research samples are collected while guaranteeing that clinical diagnostics are never impaired.

Objectives

• The aim of this study was to explore the role of Sudanese pathologists in establishing biobanks in Sudan. This is achieved through investigating their understanding, perception and attitudes towards biobank.

Methods • A cross-sectional quantitative and

qualitative study among pathologists practicing in Khartoum State was conducted.

• Quantitative data was collected through self-administered questionnaire. We used the qualitative techniques of focus group interviews and four focus group discussion were conducted (5-6 in each).

Rationale for focus group methodology•

FG methodology is a form of group interview that uses group interaction to amplify and diversify group opinions beyond those that would be obtained from other methods. This method explores not only the experiences and knowledge of participants, but also why and how they think the way they do*.

• Topics for discussion A semi-structured interview format was used, with broad questions and ample opportunities for respondents to pursue issues that interested them. We began with the pathologist discussing their ideas and knowledge about biobanking. We also discussed their roles and role of suggested regulatory bodies..

Result

• A total of 75 pathologists were involved in the study with a response rate of 80%.

• FG discussion were analyzed.• 4 themes were identified

Page 14: Abdelhalim-Perception and Attitude of Sudanese ... · Perception and Attitude of Sudanese Pathologists towards Biobank (Repository) Prof. IhsanM.O. Abdelhalim Professor of Pathology

Result• Theme 1: Knowledge• Only 12% are familiar with the terminology and

its scientific definition.• 2% it is just for stem cells & reproductive issues.• Source: Conferences or being part of research

team.• Never been taught during their pathology

training• FG: Pathology archive

FG: There was confusion and concern regarding issues that could have a major influence on their decision of sharing resources :• ethical consideration• protection of diagnostic slides and blocks, fear of

miss use of specimens• quality of tissue, • extra load• benefit to pathologists.

Conclusion• Knowledge of pathologists towards

Biobank need improvement. Introduction of biobank in pathology curricula is important to enable pathologists to play their role in establishing and managing biobanks.

Recommendation– Raising awareness – Introduction of biobank in the graduate pathology

curricula – Sponsoring of activities addressing the biobank by

IAP and its divisions as well as pathology societies.– Multidisciplinary collaboration: promotion of the use

of the biobanked samples.
