Hardworking is defined as being conscientious, careful, and thorough with your actions. Last week, we honored 20 students for being Hardworking. They are: Layne (Bell), Alivia (Lucchese), Slayde (Nicholson), Kenne-dy (Bertram), Noella (Peterson), Anna (Smith), Sean (Snyder), Emile (Mefford), Garrett (Moyer), Taylor (Tebbe), Anya (Welsh), Andrew (Brown), Grant (Cotter), Carter (Grathwohl), Eva (Lawry), Jaxson (Dubovich), Patrick (Kelley), Reese (Millspaugh), Cara (Mislan), and Mya (Timme). Congratulations everyone for a job well done!
The Power of Play (Part II) How does play influence a child's development? 1) Their creativity will flourish - creativity has been long been lauded as a critical asset. In an IBM poll, 1500 CEOs were asked to name the best predictor of future success. Their answer? Creativity. 2) Cognitive function will strengthen - a study found that there is neurological evidence that fitness has a key role in expanding their cognitive function. 3) Social skills will develop - through play, children will learn how to get along with people and deal with difficult ones. Every opportunity to play is a crash course in what works and what doesn't. 4) They will learn how to manage big feelings - theirs and others because in play, because in play things won't always go as planned. 5) They will discover their own power - play provides opportunities to solve their own problems. How can we nurture creativity through play? Build a story where you, your child and anyone else who is with you takes turns to add a line. Take them away from the here and now by asking open-ended, left-field questions. "If you were invisible/magic/could fly, what would you do? Make up different endings to the stories they're familiar with. "What could be a different ending for "Frozen"? Try an imagination game that requires them to call up things from their memory and make connections between differ-ent pieces of information. "Imagine that you are walking on the ceiling in your bedroom. What can you see? What's your favorite thing to look at from up there? What can you see/hear? What does it feel like?" Nurture their abstract thinking by inviting them to list unusual uses for everyday objects. You might need to get them started, but when they get idea, sit back and watch them. In every way, play is practice for being an adult. If we can foster a love of play, not just because "that's what kids do", but because of its inherent importance, we will be giving them something that will hold them well in relationships, in work and in life.

This past Saturday was a huge suc-cess with our first annual “Color Run.” We had over 100 students participate. A special thanks to the PTO and the many volunteers. Without their help, these sorts of events would not be pos-sible. Another big event coming up is our Spring Spectacular this Saturday. It runs from 4:00-7:00 p.m. This is one of our biggest events of the year. Hope to see you there.
A reminder to please e-mail myself ([email protected]) or Betsy Smith ([email protected]) your classroom placement letters. What do we need? We need to know what you believe is the best LEARNING ENVI-RONMENT/STYLE for your child. We are NOT looking for a specific teacher request. Thanks.

This week’s classroom meeting was about…….reframing! We are consistently talking about the importance of using Grit when the going gets tough. We know that strength-ening this important non-cognitive skill is a process which includes reframing negative thoughts that can get in the way of doing our personal best. Here are some examples: I’m just not good at this. Reframing: Let me figure out what is tricky. This is just way too hard. Reframing: This may take some time and effort. I will try. I made a mistake. Boohoo! Re-framing: What can I learn from my mistake? I will never be as smart as she is. Reframing: I will figure out what she does and do the same. Our teachers also continue to use prompts to encourage self-reflection on what students have learned. I encourage you to also take some time to help your child reflect on his (her) school experiences by encouraging this process. Here are some ideas for conversation start-ers: 1) Talk to me about what you have learned. (Successes/Failures). 2) Share what you are most proud of. 3) What have you learned about working outside your comfort zone? 4) What would you do differently next time? 4) What are you most proud of?
The viral illnesses have decreased this past week, but they are still
around. Allergies are reported to be worse than ever this year. The only aller-
gy medication I have in the clinic is Benadryl. I do not carry non-drowsy aller-
gy medications or eye drops, so if your child is in need of this type of med-
ication during the day, you must bring it into the clinic and fill out
the proper paperwork for it to be administered.
The clinic is in need of kids pants. I am almost out of girls pants right
now. Elastic waist is best as they fit a variety of shapes and sizes. I will take any
donations you are willing to give!

More informa=on about the sessions and tui=on are available at www.icchoir.org/summer. The Indianapolis Children’s Choir
summer program is a fabulous musical opportunity. Having had a daughter and grandson who par=cipated in it I highly recom-
mend it. It provides not only lots of fun but culminates in performances that are truly amazing.
