  • 4W elcome to ABC Stationerya great way to motivatechildren to write and help them learn their ABCs! Eachlined sheet of reproducible stationery features a large, appealing illustration of an object or creature that begins with thefeatured letter. Youll find an alligator, boot, castle, dinosaur, andmany more. The illustration provides a frame for students writing andgives them an image to link to the letter sound. Below each image is ashort word bank to provide additional examples of words that beginwith that letter and spark ideas for a variety of writing assignments.Emergent writers might expand the word bank and draw a smallillustration for each word. More advanced writers might write short stories, poems, letters, or even tongue twisters! Additional ideas for using thestationery sheets in learning-rich activities appear in the next section.

How to Use This BookThe 26 stationery sheets in this book help reinforce students letter-recognition skills while building on their growing understanding of lettersounds and the function of print. These pages are designed for flexibleuse. In addition to their primary function as stationery, they can also beused in many different lessons, games, and activities. Suggestions areprovided below, but you and your students are bound to develop yourown unique ways to put ABC Stationery to use in your classroom.

Getting StartedChoose which letter you would like to start with and make copies of thestationery sheet that features that letter. Before distributing the sheets, introduce children to the format with a mini-lesson such as the one thatfollows for the letter b.

    1. Gather children around you. Write Bb on the chalkboard or on chart paper and ask if someone can name the letter. Then ask ifanyone can make the sound this letter stands for. Invite students to look around the room for the letter or for objects that begin with the letter.

    2. List any student names beginning with this letter and ask if anyonerecognizes the names. If none of your students names begins withb, list a few simple words instead, such as ball, bat, and bike. Youmight also show cards with illustrations of these things and the

word for each printed below. Say each name orword emphasizing the initial /b/ sound. Have avolunteer point out which letter stands for the/b/ sound.

    3. Enlarge a sheet of stationery and display it.You might cover up the word bank for thisstep. Have the class brainstorm a list of wordsthat begin with b as you record the words onthe lines.

    4. Give each child a copy of the stationery sheetfor b. Challenge students to record theirfavorite words that begin with b. They canchoose words from the class-generated list orchoose other words. Have students draw asmall illustration for some or all of the words.

    5. Ask children to work with a partner and makeup sentences about the words on their list.Challenge them to include as many words asthey can in a single sentence. Encouragechildren to be imaginative and even a littlesilly as they incorporate the words on the listinto a few sentences.

    6. When children are ready for more of achallenge, have them write sentences on theirstationery sheet that include words with thefeatured sound. You might also have themwrite letters, poems, riddles, tongue twisters,or descriptions inspired by the illustration onthe sheet.

ABC ReferencesHave children compile their completed word lists(step 4 above) in a binder in alphabetical order toform a personal dictionary. Encourage childrento refer to their dictionaries as they are workingon other writing assignments. Or you might postenlarged stationery sheets along with a pen in aspot that students can reach so that they can addto a class word list. Set aside time for students toadd these words to their individual lists.

Sound CollagesAfter students complete a sheet of ABCstationery, distribute blank sheets of paper, scissors, glue sticks, and a selection of oldmagazines. Have children search for imageswhose names begin with the letter they have justreviewed on the stationery sheet. Instructchildren to select five to ten images, cut themout, and glue them onto the blank paper to createa collage to accompany each stationery sheet.Display the collages in the classroom or havestudents add them to their personal dictionaries.

Silly Simon SaysIncorporate movement into the learning processwith this simple game. After all, brain researchshows that connecting movement and learninghelps learners store information in the brain.Think of some silly movements that are related to a soundfor example, you might pat yourbelly to represent /b/ and give yourself a hug torepresent /h/. Then create a word list thatincludes many words that begin with b and h andsome that do not begin with either. Teach themovements to children and then read the listslowly. As you read aloud each word, studentsshould listen for the initial sound. If the wordstarts with /b/ or /h/, they should make theappropriate motion. As they learn more letters, add these to the list and teach additionalmovements for each. This game will lead to somelaughter and fun, and it also leads to more carefullistening skills.

Match ItPhotocopy each stationery sheet, then cover orcut off the letter and word bank. Write the lettersaz on index cards, one letter per card. Showstudents how to play this variation ofconcentration for 24 players. Shuffle theillustrations and place them facedown in rows

    ABC Stationery Scholastic Teaching Resources

  • 6(you might have students play with selectedletters and their corresponding stationery sheetsinstead of the entire alphabet). Shuffle the lettercards and deal an even number of cards to eachplayer. Players take turns flipping over a pictureand seeing if it begins with one of the letters intheir hand. If they find a match, they keep thepicture. If not, they return the picture facedownto its original location on the table. This gamereinforces the connection between sound andletter and sharpens memory skills.

Thematic StationeryBefore you begin using the stationery, lookthrough the illustrations to get ideas foradditional ways to use the sheets. You maychoose to present the sheets in alphabeticalorder, or in the order you teach the letters tochildren. Another fun approach is to group thestationery sheets thematically. Look through theillustrations to find images that might tie into aseason or a unit of study. Here are someexamples:

Winter: igloo, mitten, penguinOceans: fish, octopus, penguin, sealFairy Tales: castle, queen, wizard

Zany ZooMake copies of all the stationery sheets featuring animals (including z for zoo) and makea zany zoo for your classroom! Let studentsexperiment with storytelling and word play asthey write descriptive tongue twisters about eachanimal. Read aloud the word banks and brain-storm additional words that begin with theappropriate letters so that students can createlonger descriptive phrases. Be sure to includeverbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns. Studentsmight come up with a tongue twister such asPeppy penguins paint pink and purple pajamasat the party!

Alphabet FriezeUse the stationery to create an alphabet friezethat can be displayed or used in variousactivities. First, photocopy each stationery sheet. Then write the appropriate upper- and lowercaseletter in the center of each image, making themlarge and colorful. You might let studentsembellish these by coloring with crayons, markers, colored pencils, and so on, making surenot to cover the letter. For greater durability, laminate each sheet. These alphabet cards can beadded to a display, preferably at childrens eyelevel. You can also use these colorful sheets invarious games and activities, such as SoundCircle described below.

Sound CircleFor this activity, you will need a set of alphabetcards (see Alphabet Frieze, above) as well as asoft foam ball, and a large open space. Selectenough stationery sheets so that each child hasone and place these sheets in a large circle on thefloor. Ask children to select a letter and stand orsit behind it. Toss the ball to a student. Explainthat this student should say the soundrepresented by the letter in front of him or her.For a greater challenge, have students say one ormore words that begin with this letter. Once aplayer completes a turn, the player tosses the ballto someone who has not yet had a turn.

Variation: For this game, the number of cardsshould be one less than the number of students.Play lively music and have children move aroundthe circle until the music stops. Students movequickly to a letter card and then go around thecircle identifying either the sound represented bythe letter or a word that begins with the letter. One student will not have a match and should sitin the alphabet soup in the center. Remove acard, add it to the soup, and continue to playuntil all but one student are in the soup.
