Getting an idea of who you are and knowing your strengths and talents can be really useful in building confidence and self esteem.

IdentityAs a class, students will begin this activity by discussing and brainstorming what makes up your personal ‘identity’. Use a mind map to record the students’ responses about identity and then find a dictionary meaning.

Who am I?Who am I? Students will reflect on this question through discussion, writing and art. Students will brainstorm and record how they see themselves, responding to the following reflective questions. Student will then take the information they have learnt about themselves and create a collage that illustrates who they are.

Self esteem helplineStudents will imagine they are volunteering at their school’s self esteem helpline. Students will give advice and helpful tips to each of the four callers on how to improve their self esteem. These are fictional scenarios, and the issues discussed in this activity may be difficult for many students, and teachers should attempt to anticipate and be ready to respond to a range of student reactions.

Before starting this activity brainstorm a list of tips for coping with the social and emotional pressures of social media. Make a list of good choices that you make when using social media. How does it make you feel?

Download the Helpline scenarios and respond to the scenarios by giving practical, positive advice and tips. Alternatively, write your own scenarios that talk about fear of missing out (FOMO), negative body image or another emotional response to social media and then give advice.

Train like an AstronautDo you have what it takes to become an astronaut? In this activity, students will investigate what some of the physical demands are for astronauts.

Using a range of physical activities students will use the same body parts/systems as astronauts do in training and on missions in space. Choose from a range of these NASA activities, or use the activities we’ve picked out below.

Meet an AstronautWatch this YouTube video, where Canadian Commander Chris Hadfield takes time out to talk with some school students, while aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Here are some of the questions that the Canadian students asked Chris Hadfield: How has your life on board the Space Station been different from your life on earth? Do astronauts ever get sick on board the ISS? How does being in space for so long affect your body? What is it like working with all the other people on board the Space Station? Does language pose a

problem? Find out more about an Australian astronaut and create a biography What do stars look like from outer space? How do you sleep in space?

Students will choose one of the above questions or pose one of their own to investigate in more depth.Suggested research questions:

How do astronauts communicate in space? How do people prepare for going into space? What issues or problems would there be if you lived in a space station? Can people live in space permanently? Why or why not? How long does it take a rocket to reach Mars or the Moon? How fast can rockets travel? Without air, how can sound travel?

Students will present their information to the class as an interactive poster using Glogster or Prezi. Alternatively, students can present the information they find in the form of a journal entry from an astronaut’s perspective. Read these journal entries (primary source of information) to learn more about astronauts experiences living onboard the ISS.

Hi I'm Nathan and thanks for joining me!

We'll get to those stories later but first over the weekend we got some scary and very tragic news out of France. A series of terrorist attacks in Paris killed 129 people.

Here's a full explanation of what happened and what's being done about it.

The Wire

On Friday night in Paris three teams of attackers targeted bars and restaurants, a theatre during a rock concert and a stadium where an international soccer match was underway. 129 people were killed in the attacks and hundreds more were injured.

PRESIDENT HOLLANDE: At this moment while I speak, terrorist attacks of an unprecedented extent are taking place in wider Paris. There are dozens of dead, many injured, it is a horror.

Islamic State often known as IS or ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack and they've also said they were behind a separate attack in Lebanon a day earlier which killed 41 people.

In response French police have been tracking down the terrorists involved and helping to protect people throughout the country, while French planes have bombed Islamic State targets in their base of Syria. France hopes this will make it harder for the group to plan further attacks. Many world leaders are showing their support for those affected too.

BARAK OBAMA: An attack not just on France but it's an attack on the civilised world.

And around the world monuments and buildings have been lit up in blue, white and red - the colours of the French flag.

Social Media Anxiety

Reporter: Amelia Moseley

INTRO: Okay, next up we're investigating social media anxiety. A new study has found half of all teens feel anxious about missing out when they see what others post online. The findings come just days after a young girl with more than half a million Instagram followers quit the site because she felt her staged shots were making other kids feel bad. Amelia took a closer look.

For a lot of people, posting pictures online has become an important part of life! And although they're not always strictly reality, if you're scrolling through social media it can leave you feeling like you're missing out.

REPORTER: Hey, why didn’t they include me?

SOPHIA: When kids see their friends go out without them or their friends post a photo without them they feel left out and excluded and like, they’re not wanted there sometimes maybe.

JACOB: Well it can make people feel like they're not wanted like when their friends are out doing other things like at the beach, it may make people feel not important.

SAM: People get jealous of what other people have because maybe they're not as fortunate or as lucky as them and they feel a bit sad and they don’t feel like they’re as good as them.

A new report has found a lot of Aussie teenagers are feeling anxious because of what they see posted online. A lot of them worry about missing out on the things their friends are doing, getting left out of in-jokes and are afraid their friends have better lives than they do. Experts say many kids also feel pressure to look like the people they see on social media too.

TAMIKA: Some girls like try and make themselves look really good and then try and take a perfect photo.

SAM: If you see a really good photo of one of your mates and you don't think you look that great, you can feel a bit insecure about yourself.

GEORGIA: I think that social media makes people feel bad because they see lots of celebrities on social media and they’ve got perfect skin, perfect body and that makes them feel like I'm not like that.

It's an issue this Aussie teenager knows a lot about.

ESSENA: I quit social media because of my 12 year old self. And I want everyone to know that, at 12 I was miserable because of the numbers I saw on a screen.

Essena has a following of more than 500 thousand people on Instagram, but recently she decided to delete nearly all her photos. She said they were tricking other young people into thinking her life was perfect and that wasn't the truth.

ESSENA: I spent 12 to 16 wishing I was this perfect person online, then I spent 16 to 18 proving my life on social media. Perfecting myself enough to be that person.

Essena said that, like lots of people, she'd take hundreds of photos to get the right one, she'd act like she was having a great time when she wasn't, and she was often paid to promote brands or products in her photos that she didn't really use.

REPORTER: Experts say it's really important for young people to remember that what they see on social media isn't actually real life. And when you’re old enough to use these sites, the best thing to do is just enjoy being you!

They also say it's a good idea for young people to avoid spending too much time on social media and instead, make the most of the real world just beyond the screen.

GEORGIA: You have to be where you are in the moment and be happy with what you're doing at the time.

SAM: Just using social media as a tool to connect with your friends, share photos be 100% true to yourself, and yeah.

Ebola Free

Reporter: Eloise Fuss

INTRO: Now last year we told you about a scary outbreak of Ebola in West Africa. But now, one country has managed to get rid of it completely. Eloise has this good news story from Sierra Leone.

Right across Sierra Leone people are celebrating. From doctors to soldiers, journalists to fishermen and heaps and heaps of kids! For months their country has been battling a deadly disease called Ebola. But this music video's been made to celebrate that the fight in Sierra Leone is officially over.

Sierra Leone was one of the four West African countries hit by the Ebola epidemic which started in Guinea, back in 2013. It's a deadly disease spread through body fluids, like saliva and blood and thousands of people were infected with it in a short time.

The Ebola virus popped up in the US, the UK and other parts of Europe as well and it had lots of people around the world really worried.

NEWSREADER: Australian airports are on high alert - fears up to 1.5 million people could be infected by January.

Throughout West Africa 11,000 people died from the disease and thousands more got really sick, including some kids. Many kids like Sallay lost their parents to Ebola.

SALLAY: I wanted to visit them at the treatment centre but I was told they had died. At first I didn't believe it, I just cried. Then the next day it was confirmed, and that's when I believed it.

Across West Africa all sorts of measures were put in place to try to contain Ebola. Lots of sick people had to be put in special isolation areas away from their family and friends so the disease couldn't spread. Health workers had to wear this special clothing to protect themselves from getting Ebola or passing it onto others. And many schools tested kids as they arrived each day and some closed completely.

It wasn't easy but this massive effort to fight Ebola eventually started working! And finally after almost two years the Ebola virus has now almost been contained in West Africa.

And in countries like Sierra Leone that are Ebola free life is finally starting to return to normal. For Sallay that means she can go to school again which she's pretty happy about!

SALLAY: We thank God that schools are open again. When they were closed we had nothing to do. I want to be a nurse because if a friend falls ill I want to be able to treat her. If my parents were alive, they'd be very happy that I'm in school.

And for Sallay and the rest of Sierra Leone, life’s finally starting to look up.

Toilet Day

Reporter: Matthew Holbrook

INTRO: Okay, next we're talking about toilets which aren't the most glamorous subject for a story but they are important enough to have their own awareness day. Thursday the 19th of November is World Toilet Day. Because a toilet is much more than just a bit of furniture with a really bad job, it's a life saver. Here's Matt to explain.

What would you say is the greatest invention of all time? Is it TV? Maybe cars or planes? How about the internet? Well, there's actually a pretty good argument that this should win the crown. The humble toilet.

MATT HOLBROOK, REPORTER: Believe it or not, toilets are lifesavers. Good job, toilet! They're one of the most important ways we can protect ourselves from disease.

Toilets, in some form or another, have been around for a really long time. The ancient Romans had this not so private set up, complete with a system of sewers.

For hundreds of years, people in Europe did their business in chamber pots. And afterwards, chucked their waste out the window, or into the street. Gross.

Then in the 1800s, flushing toilets became a big thing. By then, people had realised human waste can make us really sick. And toilets contain and remove that waste, which helps stop nasty diseases from spreading. But while we now know how important toilets are, there are still lots of people who can't use them.

Around the world, 2.4 billion people don't have access to a simple, hygienic toilet. And that's a big problem, because those people then have to go in the open. Where it's easy for disease to spread, and where water sources can be easily contaminated. That can make people really sick with things like vomiting and diarrhoea. And around 1.5 million people, mostly kids, die every year because of it.

But a lack of toilets isn't the only problem. Many also don't have soap or clean water to wash their hands with. And others haven't been taught why using a toilet is so important. That's why the United Nations helped to start World Toilet Day. To give people, especially kids, better access to toilets and clean water. And teach them how to stop germs from spreading with videos like this.

It's already making a big difference, and saving lives. But the UN says there's still a lot more to do to flush away this problem for good. So this year on World Toilet Day, make sure you take the opportunity to celebrate your toilet for the smelly but important job it does.

Astronaut Ad

Reporter: Matt Holbrook

INTRO: Next up many young kids dream of becoming an astronaut when they grow up. And now NASA has announced the exact requirements needed to make that dream a reality. Here's Matt to give you a step-by-step guide of what it takes to work in outer space.

I always thought I'd grow up to be an astronaut, flying through space, walking on the moon, and exploring new planets. Although, I also thought I'd be a cowboy, a pilot, and a ninja turtle.

Kowabunga dudes!

While some of those dreams are a little more realistic than others. NASA's just put out an ad calling for new astronauts to come on board for its future missions in space and even to Mars. So what does it really take to become an astronaut?

MATT HOLBROOK, REPORTER: Well, you need to pass a physical test. You have to be between one point five and one point nine metres tall. That one checks out OK. And you also need perfect vision.

You also need a uni degree in something like engineering, mathematics or science, and work experience to go along with it. Well, that's me out. So how do you make the cut? Well, the first astronauts were selected way back in 1959 before we'd even gone into space. Originally, they came from the military, and they were all pilots!

These days, you don't have to be in the military, or a pilot. Candidates are often doctors, scientists, and even school teachers! But out of thousands of applicants, only a few are selected for the next stage of the process. And from there, you have go through another two years of training and testing. Yep, two whole years. Along the way, you do and learn all kinds of things. Like getting used to being inside the International Space Station and understanding how it works, how to speak Russian to communicate with Russian crew members on the ISS. And even practicing space walks in this massive pool, because being underwater is actually pretty similar to what it's like in zero gravity!

Even after all that training, there are still no guarantees. But for those who do make it as an astronaut, it's a chance to experience some pretty incredible things!

SCOTT KELLY, ISS COMMANDER: We can look out the window to see the earth in all its beauty.

NASA says it'll need a lot more astronauts for its future missions including those to Mars. And it's really important to get the very best people for the job! Unfortunately, this time around, you have to be a US citizen to apply. And while that counts me out (again), NASA says that shouldn't stop Aussie kids from dreaming big.

KJELL LINDGREN, NASA: If you're interested in doing this and becoming an astronaut and exploring the moon and being part of that generation that explores Mars, really get involved in courses in science, technology, engineering and math.

And who knows, maybe one day you could wake up to a view like this.

The Score

Russia could be out of the Rio Olympic Games. The country has been suspended from taking part in international athletics competitions after a report came out saying Russian athletes had been cheating using performance enhancing drugs and some Russian officials had been helping to cover it up.

Russia says it's working to change things and it wants to make sure honest athletes still get a chance to compete at Rio.

Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar is in training again to climb Mount Everest. The 18 year old's tried to climb the mountain twice before but hasn't been able to because of avalanches and the Nepal earthquake.

But now she's spending the next 20 weeks preparing physically and mentally and hopes to become the youngest Australian to reach the summit.

Fourteen year old Aussie Isis Holt has smashed a world record at the IPC World Championships in Doha.

COMMENTATOR: Isis Holt at the age of 14 is a world champion!

Isis has cerebral palsy which is a disability that affects her movement and posture.

She won both the 100 metre and 200 metre events, breaking records in both.

So you can expect to see her at the Paralympic Games in Rio.

And finally Scottish striker Steven MacKay has kicked what could be one of the worst penalty shots ever. He was given the spot kick after this trip from Deveronvale's goalkeeper.

But things didn't quite go to plan. Awkward.

Welcome Camp

Reporter: Amelia Moseley

INTRO: Last up today, moving to a new country can be tough especially if you don't know anyone and you're still learning the language. That's why, here in Australia, a new program has been set up by some kids to encourage new arrivals to find their feet and some new friends in the great outdoors. Here's Amelia.

Bags packed. Gear on. These high school kids are ready for a brand new adventure!

BEATRICE: It's my first time to come here in this place, so it is so exciting.

COREY, PEER SUPPORT LEADER: It's just a beautiful place, I love camping as well so it's just good to get out in the nature.

They're off on a two day hiking trip across the Bogong High Plains of Victoria. Tthis isn't just your usual school camp, it's a chance to welcome students who are new to Australia and help them find their feet.

BEATRICE: They're so encouraging, yeah they're nice people.

Some of these guys immigrated here with their families; others are refugees who've had to flee war or poverty. Like Beatrice, she's only been living in Australia for a month after she and her six siblings came here from Kenya in Africa. And it hasn't always been easy.

BEATRICE: Yeah I miss my friends, where I used to live.

TIKKA: I miss everyone.

Tikka and Sanjit both moved here from Nepal with their families too. Now they all go to school together in Wodonga in country Victoria.

BEATRICE: Wodonga, it's a nice place, a quiet one, people are friendly there.

But when you don't know anyone and you're still learning the language, it can be a big challenge.

TIKKA: It is bit difficult because of the English.

COREY, PEER SUPPORT LEADER: It's like you're going somewhere with your eyes blindfolded. When they see that we're helping them and everything, they really love it because it's like we're taking off that blindfold.

That's why Corey and some other kids at Wodonga High Started this Peer Support Program with the help from their local YMCA.

COREY: We don't want them to feel scared, or just feel left alone, or like they're the odd one out cause they're not. We're all human beings.

And although activities like camping can be a little confusing, these guys say they're getting a lot out of the experience!

SANJIT: Fitness, for legs! Getting bigger muscles!

No, not just that! They're also making new friends along the way.

TIKKA: We can interact with people, that's one of the good things about this because I love making friends.

Tikka says talking to more people is also helping him learn English.

TIKKA: I can speak better English, but not better than you guys!

Mentor Corey says he's got a lot out of the experience too!

COREY, PEER SUPPORT LEADER: They bring their life that they had over there to here, it changes your life a little bit too.

SANJIT: Especially the food. My food is mostly spicy and some other countries they don't eat spicy food so that's a difference!

Sanjit is all about the food!

SANJIT: I'll probably be a chef when I finish year 12. I love cooking.

Tikka has his own dream.

TIKKA: After school, I'm thinking of doing software engineering.

They're the kind of opportunities these guys say they might never have got in their home countries.

TIKKA: In Nepal, we have to do hard work. We have to do hard work here too, but not as Nepal. Yeah, we can get a better future here.

Dreams they can now share with their new friends around the campfire.
