Golden Tree in memory of farm workers

Two homes were targeted last week

Dan KINVIGAbbotsford News

A model of a monument in memory of three farm work-ers killed in a freeway crash in 2007 was revealed at a candlelight vigil on Sunday afternoon at Abbotsford Civic Plaza.

Families of the deceased farm workers unveiled a model of the Golden Tree Monument, designed by local artists Dean and Christina Lauze. The full 20-foot-high version will be erected on the shoreline of Mill Lake in Abbotsford next year.

Sarabjit Kaur Sidhu, Amarjit Kaur Bal and Sukhvinder Kaur Punia were killed on the morning of March 7, 2007 when the overloaded and unsafe van in which they were travelling crashed on Highway 1 in Abbotsford.

Although police recom-mended charges against the driver, none were laid.

In December 2009, a coro-ner’s jury made 18 recom-mendations that would make farm workers safe. Not

all recommendations have been implemented, accord-ing to the BC Federation of Labour.

Sunday’s memorial, mark-ing the sixth anniversary of the accident, included speech-es in English and Punjabi by family members of the de-

ceased women and by local dignitaries.

“We are overjoyed with this beautiful monument, designed in remembrance of our lost wives and mothers,” said Jagjit Sidhu, husband of deceased worker Sarabjit Sidhu. “It represents our con-

tinued struggle to make farm workers safer. We are proud to dedicate this monument to all farm workers in B.C.”

Coun. Bill MacGregor, Abbotsford’s deputy mayor, called the incident “a very tragic event for our commu-nity.

“This sense of loss will never go away,” he said.

Jim Sinclair, president of the BC Federation of Labour, said the lives of the three women are “sacred and im-portant.

“Their legacy must be that it is safer for farm workers to go to work,” he said.

“Our crime as working peo-ple is that we forget. And in forgetting, we allow it to hap-pen again.”

The provincial govern-ment and WorkSafeBC have committed $100,000 to the monument project, and fund-raising continues to ensure the project can be complet-ed. Charitable donations can be made to Abbotsford Community Services.

honorary degree for bif naked

Rocker, actress and activist Bif Naked can now add doctor to her list of achievements. Mark Evered, president of the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), made a surprise announcement on Friday that the Vancouver musician will re-ceive an honorary doctorate from the university at convocation in June. Bif had just delivered a speech about body image and the media, and her experi-ence with breast cancer. She was a guest speaker during International Women’s Day activities at the Abbotsford campus of UFV.Evered said the doctorate is in honour of her contribution to the arts and her life-changing work with women undergoing cancer treatment.

of Downes Road, sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday, March 2 and 4 a.m. Sunday, March 3.

In both cases, the culprit got into the homes through an

unlocked ground-floor window while the occupants were sleeping.

A woman’s purse was stolen in one of the incidents. MacDonald said the residents of the other home didn’t notice anything had been taken.

The tenants discovered that someone had been in their homes after they awoke the next morning and saw that items had been moved around and windows were open.

Holmberg House set to startGroundbreaking for adult hospice

Vikki HOPESAbbotsford News

About 100 dig-nitaries, support-ers, volunteers and construction work-ers gathered Friday to break ground for the Holmberg House site on Marshall Road, just west of Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

Construction is set to begin, and the 20,000 sq. ft. facility is expected to open in the late spring or early summer of 2014.

The residence, run by the Abbotsford Hospice Society (AHS), will provide end-of-life care to peo-ple 19 years and older, as well as support for grieving families and friends.

“Holmberg House will be a place of se-curity and warmth, a place where loved ones can gather,” Mayor Bruce Banman told the crowd.

AHS executive director Debbie Lehmann said plans to build a hospice res-idence in Abbotsford have been underway since 1985.

Abbotsford West MLA Mike de Jong joined Banman,

Lehmann and AHS board co-chair Angelo Rea in thanking the Holmberg family for their contributions to the facility.

The hospice is named for Dave Holmberg Jr., who died of cancer in March 2011 at the age of 48.

His family previ-ously announced a $1 million commitment to Holmberg House,

which included a $500,000 donation in November.

“At the worst mo-ment in this family’s

lives, to step for-ward and say, ‘We’re going to do something to take this trag-

edy and turn it into something we can make sense of,’ it really does defy words,” de Jong said.

Dave Holmberg Sr.

said the facility will have a “wonderful impact” in the com-munity.

Holmberg House is being built as part of the Dave Lede Campus of Care, which also in-cludes Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and Matthew’s House, a respite fa-cility for children with severe disabili-ties.

Hospice gala raises funds for services

About 300 people at-tended the Abbotsford Hospice Society’s (AHS) annual gala fundraising event on Saturday night at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre.

A fundraising total was not available as of press deadline, but AHS executive direc-tor Debbie Lehmann said the money will be used mainly to sup-port frontline services.

AHS supports people who are dying and provides programs for children, teens and adults who are griev-ing.

Some of the funds from the gala, which had an “enchanted for-est” theme, will also support Holmberg House, a 10-bed facil-ity that will care for patients as young as 19 who are unable to die at home.

Groundbreaking on that facility, located next to Abbotsford Regional Hospital as part of the Campus of Care Project, took place on

Friday. The Dave Lede Campus of Care also includes Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and

Matthew’s House, a re-spite facility for children with severe disabili-ties.

Published and printed by Black Press Limited 34375 Gladys Avenue, Abbotsford

Longer days provide ‘opportunities’

George W. Bush may not have been the brightest light to shine in the White House, but he did bring one benefit to North America – the adoption of three more weeks of daylight saving time.

Now, instead of wasting daylight on the early mornings of March, we can use them in the evenings to work in the yard, play in the parks or simply enjoy the sunset at a more convenient time.

You don’t see much of “W” any more, though he was featured in a commercial this winter to pro-mote the charitable sale of his Ford pickup.

His most memorable visual to me, however, was on that fateful day in September 2001 when, sitting in a Florida classroom, the camera

closed in on him as he was informed of the attacks on the World Trade Centre.

The two guys in the Dumb and Dumber movie could not have pulled off a better expression than George did that day, nor acted any better when, instead of leaping up and running out of the room, POTUS continued to listen to a group of children read aloud.

However, this isn’t about his short-comings as much as his foresight in changing the way daylight saving time is introduced each year, and the benefits we all derive from that one act.

It, and hoped-for sunshine, even inspired me to take a few days out of the office to tackle some yard work that even with longer evenings will require time to complete before the inevitable lawn mowing begins in earnest.

The break might also provide some time for me to catch up on all the email replies I have neglected for the past month.

I’d like to be able to blame Shaw for my lack of responses, but even

its failure to deliver emails last week isn’t an excuse, because they claim only one message failed to arrive.

Apparently, in its effort to erad-icate spam, the company last Thursday killed all email messages,

regardless of content, demonstrat-ing a “Bushian” propensity for error that, considering how much they charge for Internet service, is excus-able only if a significant adjustment is made on our monthly bill.

Kind of like daylight saving time increases – do something smart and we’ll likely forget the stupid things.

And it isn’t only presidents and giant corporations attempting to

right dumb decisions.Another reason for my current

“staycation” is to try to avoid being, to use a polite word, a boor, because I am entering the second week of a stop-smoking program. According to the medication, there is the possibil-ity, though in my case it is a propen-sity, to be aggressive when using it, while at the same time eliminating the supposed “calming” effect of a cigarette.

So, in an effort to shield all those who may come in contact with me, a decision to “hermitize” for a few days is perhaps the best choice, par-ticularly when trying to end a rela-tionship that has endured for more than half a century.

Why, after so long, am I making the effort?

While it takes about $3,500 a year to maintain the habit, the true moti-vator was the thought of eventually spending my last days hooked up to an oxygen tank, the hoses leading to my nose diminishing somewhat my perception of looking sexy.

[email protected]

Wooing the ethnic vote is nothing new in the political world – espe-cially in the scrappy mud-wrestling that defines election campaigns and often politics in general in B.C.

Over the past few decades, ethnic communities – particularly South Asian – have wielded increasing political power, both in terms of individual voting, and fielding their own representatives.

Winning favour in these communi-ties can secure a mainstream candi-date’s seat, or significantly bolster a party’s fortunes.

And so it’s little surprise the beleaguered B.C. Liberals looked to the ethnic vote as partial salva-tion from the political quagmire in which they find themselves.

Except, in what has become virtu-ally predictable Liberal fashion, the initiative was fumbled.

What was conceived as an ethnic outreach effort turned into another

embarrassment, with distasteful references to “quick wins” via gov-ernment apologies to ethnic com-munities for historical wrongs.

Apparently, it never occurred to the Liberal strategists involved that they were playing catch with a live hand grenade should the NDP – and thus the media, and thus the public – were ever to hear about this ill-considered plan.

Of course, that’s what happened, and Premier Christy Clark had to do some apologizing of her own.

It seems the Liberals learned little from the last internal pratfall, when it was discovered they were break-ing the rules by using taxpayer-funded computers and facilities to launch anti-NDP websites.

Premier Christy Clark must be growing weary of having to say sorry for the mistakes of her team.

It may well be that she won’t have to for much longer.

Another mishandled plan

Kind of like daylight savings time increases – do something smart and we’ll likely forget the stupid things.

Unnecessary for animals to sufferI was absolutely appalled to read the re-

cent news regarding the coyote caught in a leg-hold trap.

This creature spent days suffering in un-imaginable pain, eventually trying to chew off his own leg in a desperate attempt to survive. He was eventually found emaciated and taken to animal control where he had to be euthanized. I am so ashamed to be part of a community that would condone this kind of needless suffering.

These cruel traps are usually intended

to trap fur-bearing animals, but they kill indiscriminately. The targeted animals are brutally killed for fashion, and the unin-tended victims, including pets, are simply discarded.

What a tragic waste of life. It is completely unnecessary for these animals to suffer like this. Leg-hold traps are cruel and should be banned immediately. If an animal needs to be removed from an area, there are several humane options available.

Retiring Communitas CEO honouredSteve Thiessen recognized for his contributions

Teamwork takes commitment. It’s a lesson Steve Thiessen has learned  – and lived – for over three decades

with Communitas Supportive Care Services.

Thiessen, the chief executive officer of Communitas, retired

on Feb. 28 after 30 years of service with the organization.

Communitas is a provincial social ser-vice agency based

in Abbotsford that provides support for people living with a disability.

Services include full-time residential care, integration of people living with a disabil-ity into community-based programs and employment, and re-spite care.

As CEO, Thiessen led Communitas into providing a wide range of services aimed at building an inclusive community and advocating for in-dividuals living with a disability.

Under Thiessen’s leadership, the agen-cy (formerly MCC Supportive Care Services) grew from 10 staff in the early 1980s to more than 400 today, many work-ing in Abbotsford.

“Steve has kept bringing people around him, to col-laborate, to bring ex-pertise,” said Eugene Klassen, Communitas chief financial officer. “He sees the best in people before drawing limits. This has al-lowed us to build and grow.”

At the celebration on Thursday, Thiessen was honored by col-leagues and commu-nity partners for the contributions made over his career.

“Steve is outstand-ing in a field of out-standing people,” said Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen.

Guests recalled how Thiessen’s teamwork philosophy of leader-ship, as well as his gentle, respectful ap-proach to the people Communitas serves, have made a differ-ence in the commu-nity.

“His open door at-tested to his readiness, willingness, and open-ness for communica-tion,” said Marlyce Friesen, chair of the Communitas board of directors.

Karyn Santiago has been named the agen-cy’s new CEO. She has experience in local and international community develop-ment. “Steve has led the way in advocat-ing for individuals liv-ing with disabilities,” Santiago said. “I am excited to contribute to Communitas and the work Steve has been a part of.”

Steve Thiessen and his wife Vange

say farewell to Communitas

Supportive Care Society after 30 years

of service.

When the people of Abbotsford spoke, Chances Playtime Gaming listened. In their quest to become more of an entertainment

facility, the doors to RED 21 Gaming Tap +Grill have recently opened. While the name may be new now, once you sample the hot food and cold beer, it might become the city’s newest dining hotspot.

“We’re Abbotsford’s best kept secret right now,” says facility manager Jim Brenner. “People voiced that they wanted to have fun, and they wanted to do it here in town.”

Located at 30835 Peardonville Road in Abbotsford, RED 21 is a part of the newly renovated Chances ca-sino. The menu offers food from simple to sophisti-cated, including sizeable appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches, atbreads and main courses, all at afford-able prices. A distinctive feature of the restaurant is the bar top slots that keep the gaming momentum going even while enjoying a meal.

The interior walls are adorned with high de nition TVs, and surrounding art that re ects the beauty of B.C with sprawling nature scenes, including Mt. Baker.

Sitting down in a plush booth with Jim and vice-pres-ident of operations, Bill Stewart, my secondary taste-tester Matt and I began with a trio of recom-mended appetizers. First came the unique coconut prawns (black tiger prawns with a sweet chili dip), and then the delightfully crispy calamari with a house-made tzatziki, followed by lollipop ribs served with a tangy mustard sauce.

For an entree I just had to try the 12-ounce boneless rib eye steak, which comes with a choice of savoury peppercorn sauce, blue cheese butter or sautéed garlic mushrooms. The plate came fully loaded with a thick mound of garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli.

My companion opted for the cordon bleu, served with linguini noodles in a pesto cream sauce and sea-sonal vegetables. With a variety of beer on tap, he may have only stopped eating long enough to order a RED 21 pale ale, which he described as “deep and delicious with an apple-like aftertaste.”

Jim also enjoyed the cordon bleu, which includes the name “RED 21” beside it on the menu to indicate a unique twist on the classic dish by the kitchen.

Bill feasted on the seafood linguini, impressively lav-ished with black tiger prawns, cod and clams tossed in a white wine cream sauce.

The menu is stacked with choices including a Montre-al reuben on grilled rye bread, and a beef dip with the option to make it a Philly by adding grilled peppers, onions, mushrooms and Swiss cheese, all with the choice of fries, soup or salad. The main dishes range from homemade Indian yellow coconut curry chicken, beer-battered sh and chips, and baby back ribs with Tennessee Whiskey or Red Hot BBQ sauce.

Having nished his beer, my guest ordered a Caesar, and was quite pleased with its rich avor and garnish of bean and olive. He leaned over to me and whis-pered, “I’ve really liked everything so far.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Even though the RED 21 team has just started out in Abbotsford, they believe that they have a winning concept and are looking to their lead chef Amanda James to help launch another successful location.

“She promotes quality standards, and right now it’s about getting the food program off the ground and attracting the right people,” says Bill. “We want to make sure that we are providing something for ev-eryone.”

From food and games to live local entertainment, every night of the week offers something new to in-trigue every age group.

“It’s prime rib night here on Fridays where we offer three cuts of prime rib that are sterling silver quality beef, with prices that can’t be touched,” explains Jim. “That also comes with a gaming offer, so anyone who purchases the meal gets a ve-dollar gaming vouch-er.”

So whether you are looking to eat, drink, play or so-cialize, this is your RED 21, Abbotsford, and all bets are on success.

Abbotsford Senior officially opened

Kevin MILLSAbbotsford News

Guests and grads from decades past were on hand for the official opening of Abbotsford Senior Secondary on Friday.

After a $45-million partial replacement and seismic upgrade, Abby Senior at 2329 Crescent Way is now entering a new chapter in its long history.

While the new facility opened in September, most of the finishing touches are now complet-ed. The gymnasiums, music area, community theatre and some classrooms were retained from the old building.

Guest speakers at the event included Abbotsford Board of Education Chair Cindy Schafer, student speaker Elena Giuchici and Abbotsford-West MLA Mike de Jong, a former student.

Also being celebrated was the official opening of the on-site Abbotsford Community Library, funded by a $4-million contribution from the City of Abbotsford. The school also hosts the Sweeney Neighbourhood Learning Centre which will offer a range of community and city programs and services. It is named in honour of Ron Sweeney, former Abby Senior teacher, for-mer city councillor and community supporter. He was in attendance with his wife Mary to participate in the occasion.

Guests are surrounded by students watching from the rotunda at Abbotsford Senior Secondary.

Students raise $18,000Yale Secondary stu-

dents stayed up all night Friday, raising around $18,000 to help build schools in Africa.

About 300 enthusi-astic teens attended the school’s second annual all-night fund-raising event, Live to Give.

Students ro-tated through 10 rooms, in-cluding Hunger Games-themed activ-ities, glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, a candy room, a mechanical bull ride and more.

Each student had to raise at least $50 towards the con-struction of schools in Sierra Leone, via the Canadian charity organization Free the Children.

Teacher Doug Primrose said the school set a goal of about $20,000 this year, after last year’s inaugural event, billed as Dare to Care, raised nearly that amount for clean water and sanitation

projects in Kenya.The 61 stu-

dents in Yale’s senior leader-ship classes

handled the plan-ning and execution of the event, with teachers providing guidance.

Celina Knelsen, one of the student organizers, said they worked hard on the event for about a month, with Grade 11 and 12 leadership students arranging the various activities.

Have you ever taken a look in the mirror and thought to yourself, “Wow, it’s time for a change!”? Historic Downtown Abbotsford did that years ago, and the outcome of that makeover is spectacular. Have you noticed, or are you still one of the many people who hasn’t visited our downtown since before the transformation?

The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association and its membership have poured heart and soul into the revitalization and rejuvenation of your Historic Downtown. Special attention has been given to heritage buildings in the area in order to restore in a way that complements

and enhances the buildings’ historic value and maintains the heritage character of the area. New developments are encouraged to be designed in a manner that blends harmoniously with the historic elements of the streetscape. The goal of the ADBA has been to create an environment which fosters economic prosperity and a sense of community, a place Abbotsfordians can be proud of.

What have we accomplished so far? We now have a beautiful downtown that is a source of community pride and a desired destination for residents and visitors alike, attracting patrons

Hansen Secondary among winners

Three schools in the Fraser Valley are celebrating big wins in the University of the Fraser Valley’s first-ever ChatterHigh competition.

The students of Rick Hansen Secondary, Hope Secondary and Chilliwack Senior Secondary have earned their school not only bragging rights, but prize money.

Rick Hansen students took home first place and a cheque for $1,250.

UFV recently partnered with ChatterHigh, a newly created website designed with one focus – to help students learn more about the post-secondary options available in BC.

To add an element of fun and friendly competition between local schools, UFV’s recruitment team decided to put some prize money on the line.

Students in the five Fraser Valley school districts were invited to participate on the ChatterHigh website by answering quiz questions and earning points for correct answers.

The competition was open in October and November.

Poster warns of ecstasy usePolice release third in series

The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has launched its third poster in the Operation X series which is aimed at informing youths about the dangers of using street drugs.

The poster depicts the potential tragic out-come of street-drug use and challenges young people to “Be the life of the party, not the death.”

“We think that this is an important mes-sage to be shared with young people in ad-vance of spring break and before the gradu-ation season is in full swing,” said Const. Ian

MacDonald in a press release. The release of the poster coincides with

the release of the Punjabi version of the APD’s documentary film “Operation X – The Straight Goods on E.”

That film, which will be released nation-ally this year, was made following the ec-stasy-related deaths in late 2011 of Cheryl McCormack, 17, and Tyler Miller, 20, of Abbotsford.

Both the Punjabi and English versions of the film can be seen on YouTube.

Abbotsford Police have released the third in a series of posters aimed at raising youth awareness about the dan-gers of using the drug ecstasy.

NATIONAL CHAMPS!

Dan KINVIGAbbotsford News

The glow of winning a nation-al championship was still fresh for the University of the Fraser Valley women’s volleyball team when they set their sights on a new goal – one that might be even tougher to attain.

With the program’s first-ev-er Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) title se-cured, thanks to a clinical three-set win over the host Lakeland Rustlers on Saturday evening in Lloydminster, Alta., the giddy Cascades players were determined to draw some deep emotion out of head coach Dennis Bokenfohr.

Specifically, they wanted him to cry.

“I think they’re going to try to get a heartfelt speech out of me,” Bokenfohr said with a chuckle via cellphone, as the Cascades drove back to their team hotel to continue a celebration that began at the Lakeland gymna-sium.

“But I’m staying strong. They’re trying to make me cry – it’s not going to work.”

Whether or not the players ended up inducing the water-

works from their usually stoic bench boss, the night was, with-out a doubt, an unqualified suc-cess.

Facing a sixth-seeded Lakeland squad which had rid-den the adrenaline of its home crowd all the way to the final, the top-ranked Cascades wast-ed little time draining any sus-pense from the proceedings.

UFV dominated the first two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-10, then sealed the title with a 25-20 triumph in the third.

Kayla Bruce, named the na-tional player of the year ear-lier in the week, paced the offence with 11 kills, while Krista Hogewoning and Katie Bilodeau had eight kills apiece and Jenna Evans chipped in with seven kills and three aces. Libero Brittany Stewart notched a team-high 11 digs, while setter Kira Tome picked up player of the game honours.

Evans, a fourth-year out-side hitter out of Abbotsford’s St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary, was selected MVP of the national tourney.  Bruce and Stewart were named to the first all-star team and Bilodeau to the second team.

“We came out with a pret-

ty good game plan,” noted Bokenfohr, whose team beat the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics and the Cégep Garneau Elans en route to the final. “The girls knew what to do, it was just a matter of execution.”

Bruce said it would take a while for the thrill of winning a national title to fully sink in.

“That was my last game as a fifth year (player), and we won a national championship,” she marvelled. “It’s really exciting, and I’m going to remember it for a really long time.”

The Lakeland gym was packed with over 1,000 fans cheering on the home side, and

Bokenfohr said the buzz in the building was “outstanding.”

“It was just a fun atmosphere to play in, and our girls relished it,” he said. “They had smiles on their faces right from the time they stepped into the gym, and they built off it.”n The tournament was a learn-

ing experience for the Columbia Bible College women’s volley-ballers.

The Bearcats, making their debut at nationals, lost all three games and finished eighth. They wrapped up their run with a five-set defeat (25-22, 17-25, 14-25, 25-23, 15-12) the Mount Saint Vincent in the seventh/eighth

placing game on Saturday af-ternoon.

Sadie Ball (15 kills) and April Van Wieren (14 kills) had big games offensively, while Sharaya Schulte racked up 26 digs.

“The first time you get on the big stage, you get a little bit of the deer-in-headlights going on that first day,” CBC coach Duncan Harrison noted.

“The competition was excellent, and I was really proud of our kids. I thought they played extremely well, and represented our confer-ence and our school and our city well. I’m really proud of what we’ve done, and it’s something we can build off of.”

Hawks junior girls win B.C. hoops title

Cascades dominate at CCAA tourney, beat hosts in final

Dan KINVIGAbbotsford News

At the start of the B.C. ju-nior girls basketball provin-cials, the W.J. Mouat Hawks were flipping through the tournament program and no-ticed that no Abbotsford team had ever won that particular championship.

By week's end they had rec-tified the situation, capping a memorable season with a

41-29 victory over St. Thomas More in Saturday's title game at the Langley Events Centre.

The Hawks were especially dominant at the defensive end of the floor –  none of their four opponents at provincials cracked the 30-point barrier.

"We were defensively amaz-ing all week – we just played out of our minds," said Hawks coach Paula Thompson, whose team posted a 44-1 record this

season. "And we were knocking

down shots. We probably could have shot it from the bathroom stall and it would have gone in."

Amanda Thompson, the coach's daughter, was tourney MVP after scoring 14 points in the final, and Adina Oprea (first team) and Alicia Unruh (second team) were named all-stars.

Heat find scoring touchThe Abbotsford

Heat emerged from a prolonged scoring slump to earn three of a possible four points on Saturday and Sunday.

The Heat were coming off two straight shutout losses –  2-0 to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Tuesday, and 5-0 to the Rochester Americans on Friday.

But they found their scoring touch against the Toronto Marlies on

Saturday, as Tyler Ruegsegger’s goal at 13:29 of the first pe-riod ended the team’s scoreless streak at 164 minutes and 11 seconds.

Abbotsford would go on to a 4-2 victo-ry, with A k i m Aliu and Carter Bancks register-ing a goal and an assist apiece and Blair Jones notch-ing his first goal

as a member of the Heat. Goalie Danny Taylor picked up his first win since being sent back to

the Heat by the

C a l g a r y Flames last

Wednesday.S u n d a y

brought a rematch with Rochester, and marked the return on Sven Baertschi to the Abby lineup. The highly touted rookie had been sent down by the Flames the

day before. The Amerks ended

up with a 3-2 vic-tory after an epic 10-round shootout. Alex Biega scored the winner, while Aliu and Drew MacKenzie supplied the Heat’s goals in regulation.

The Heat (28-25-9, 65 points) continue their road trip with a trio of games this week, beginning with a Wednesday tilt vs. the Texas Stars.

Kodiaks push Pilots to the brinkDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

Their backs are against the wall after two straight double-overtime losses, but the Abbotsford Pilots believe they’re capa-ble of a comeback.

The local club dropped two games in heartbreak-ing fashion in their Pacific Junior Hockey League semifinal playoff series on the weekend, as the Aldergrove Kodiaks opened a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven set.

On Friday at MSA Arena, Kodiaks for-ward Brandon Dolby jammed the puck past Abby goalie Aaron Oakley in a goalmouth scramble at 7:58 of the second OT to lift his team to a 5-4 win. On Sunday, it was Stefan

Gonzales playing the hero –  he scored at 3:33 of double-OT to give Aldergrove a 4-3 triumph.

“We’re still in pretty good shape –  you’ve got to win four games, that’s usually how it works,” insisted Pilots coach Jim Cowden, noting that his team rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the 2011

playoffs vs. the Port Moody Panthers.

“Generally, we’ve been playing pretty well, and we’re still pretty confident. We’ll

just have to keep plugging away.”

Fueling the Pilots’ confidence is the fact they built third-period leads in both weekend losses, but the flip side of that coin is, they need to finish stronger.

“We had breakdowns both games,” Cowden noted. “But we’re still upbeat and believe we can win this.”

Game 5 goes at MSA Arena at 7 p.m., with the Pilots hop-ing to force Game 6 (Wednesday, 7:15 p.m., Aldergrove Community Arena) and Game 7 (Friday, 7:30 p.m., MSA Arena).

Pilots goalie Aaron Oakley watches a shot slip past him during Game 3 vs. Aldergrove on Friday at MSA Arena.

Hawks, Eagles climb podiumThe Mouat girls basketball pro-

gram clearly has a bright future –  the Grade 9 squad won sil-ver at their provincials the pre-vious week. Victoria Jacobse of the Hawks was tournament MVP, while Sarah Spring was a tourney all-star.

n The MEI Eagles Grade 8 boys squad nearly won a provincial title of their own, but they settled for sil-ver after dropping a dramatic 54-52 decision to Kitsilano in Saturday's final at Pitt Meadows.

There were four lead changes in the final minute alone, but Kitsilano fended off the top-seeded Eagles in the dying seconds. MEI's Ty Rowell earned player of the game honours after racking up 34 points in the final, and he and Carson Bargen were named tourney all-stars.

"The boys were disappointed by the loss in the final game but with the memories of a 39-2 season, they will have lots good times to re-member," said Eagles coach Pat Johnson, whose team's terrific cam-paign included gold medals at the Abbotsford City Police tourney and the Fraser Valleys.

n At AAA senior girls provincials in Langley, Mouat and MEI both posted 1-3 records.

The Eagles won their last game, blasting Mt. Baker 88-39 on Saturday behind a big game from their post duo of Taylor Claggett (31 points, 18 rebounds) and Tessa Ratzlaff (25 points, 24 rebounds).

Mouat's victory came by a score of 68-65 over Burnaby South on Friday. They finished the tourney with a 69-64 loss to Prince George, despite double-doubles from the M'Bikata sisters, Carmelle (25

points, 11 rebounds) and Penielle (16 points, 10 boards).

n The Howe Bulldogs finished sixth at Grade 8 girls B.C.’s, wrap-ping up the event with a 31-30 loss to Windsor in the fifth-sixth game. Gurbeen Toor was an honourable mention all-star.

n The St. John Brebeuf senior boys were eighth at Single A pro-vincials at UFV, knocking off B.C. Christian 67-51 in their finale on Saturday. Point guard E.J. Rabanes was an honourable mention all-star.

n The Abbotsford Christian se-nior girls finished 14th at AA pro-vincials in Kamloops. They posted a 1-3 record, beating J.L. Crowe 73-40 on Friday behind 17 points and 13 rebounds from Renee Bomhof.

n The Mouat Grade 9 boys dropped their provincial opener to St. George's, but won their next four games with Jas Singh earning multiple player of the game awards.

Ty Rowell played a starring role as the MEI Grade 8 boys won provincial silver.

Lions, Hawks boys in the hunt for B.C. title

Dan KINVIGAbbotsford News

The B.C. AAA high school boys basketball championship is as wide-open as it’s ever been, and the Yale Lions and W.J. Mouat Hawks are dreaming of cutting down the nets at the Langley Events Centre as the tournament tips off this week.

The Lions are among the top contenders, as one of three teams to hold the No. 1 ranking this season.

But this group has a far different makeup than Al Friesen’s title-winning teams of 2008 and 2010 –  they’re a smallish squad that fast-breaks foes to death, whereas both of Yale’s title teams dom-inated in the paint.

“We don’t have a beast waiting to be unleashed physically,” noted Friesen, whose team is led by swing-man JJ Pankratz and

point guard Jauquin Bennett-Boire. “It’s all about how tough you can become . . . and how well you can channel that as a group.”

The Hawks are tal-ented in their own right – they opened the sea-son ranked No. 5 and have been in and out of the top 10 at different points. They’re the big-gest team in the field, with 6’11” Sebastian Muermann and 6’9” Tristan Etienne, but aside from point guard Corey Hauck, they’re not overly dynamic on the perimeter.

“We’ll need to have a complete team effort –  it’s not just about relying on one or two guys,” Hawks coach Rich Ralston said.

Both teams open on Wednesday, with Mouat facing Handsworth at 10 a.m., followed by Yale vs. the Burnaby Mountain-Caledonia winner at 11:30 a.m.For more preview cover-age, visit abbynews.com.

Abbotsford News Tuesday, March 12, 2013 A27

Passed away peacefully at Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission, BC. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Margaret, in Sep-tember, 1994 and by 2 broth-ers and 1 sister in Scotland, and a brother-in-law in New Zealand.Bob is survived by his chil-dren Alice (Wendy), Ken (Marlene) and Sandy (Rod), brother David (Marjory) and sister-in-law Rosemary and many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Britain, New Zealand and Canada. Also missing him terribly are his grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Kristopher (Ange-la), Kayla (Devin), Trevor (Kristalynn) and Jeremy (Matina) and his step-grand-children Michael and Chris-topher.Dad was born in Glasgow, Scotland and during the war was sent to live with his

relatives in Vancouver. His cousins were like big sisters to him and he adored them to the end. After the war he returned to Scotland where he met Margaret. He attend-ed Glasgow University and graduated in 1951. He and Mom married July 27, 1954 and then immigrated to Canada in 1955. Dad started work with BC Electric and stayed with them through their growth and name changes until retiring from BC Hydro in 1988.Over the years Dad was in-volved in the Abbotsford Scottish Club, minor softball where he coached Alice’s and Sandy’s teams, the Gourmet Club he formed with neigh-bours and friends, and the BC Hydro Power Pioneers. He built the family home and he and Mom took great pride in the yard with the flower beds, vegetable garden and hanging baskets. They also enjoyed travelling.Dad never had a harsh or bad word to say about any-one. As Jennifer said, ‘he was the best Grandpa a grand-daughter could have’. No ser-vice at this time. Donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
