I am the publisher for all The Works magazines, I live in Abbeydale with my baby daughter, husband and mad cocker spaniel. I enjoy walking, gardening and anything that makes me laugh!
For future issues I will be looking for local topics, your opinions (good or bad!), stories & people of interest so any suggestions would be most welcomed - please email [email protected].
As a community magazine we are always trying to extend our links with local businesses and believe that our low budget advertising offers could be the answer to promoting your business during the current “credit crunch” climate.

Dick Whittington Farm Park Spring is upon us and there is no better place to appreciate this than at the Dick Whittington Farm Park at Little London, Longhope, in west Gloucestershire.
During the long cold wet Winter the animal Mums have been carrying their babies in readiness for the Spring-time arrivals at Easter.
Lambing is now well underway at the Farm Park. With so many new mouths to feed the public are invited to assist with the bottle-feeding of the lambs which is great fun for the kids.
Chicks and ducklings are hatching from the eggs. Baby wallabies (Joeys) are beginning to peer out of their Mother's pouch.
The pygmy goat flock has been swelled by a number of newly-arrived kids (the four-legged sort) and even shoals of newborn carp have been spotted in the Carp Lake.
Enjoy the blaze of colour along the daffodil walk Nature Trail. Peer into the Bluebell Wood to enjoy the colourful carpet of bluebells and see if you can spot any activity around the buzzard's nest.
The Charolais cattle now have calves at foot and even the Shetland ponies are expecting their foals to pop out shortly.
The massive indoor Play Barn is always very popular. Outside there is the mini-digger, water blaster, giant sandpit with wooden fort and the newly-extended pedal kart course to enjoy.
Keep up to date by visiting the website www.dickwhittington.org. The Park is open every day from 1st March through until September. For further information telephone 01452 - 831000.

DAVE’S TOP TIPS
Hard to reach screws
If you find you have to get a screw into a tricky position or corner here’s a quick tip to hold the screw to the blade of the screwdriver. Take a piece of masking tape and push the screw through it with the sticky side of the tape face up.
Then insert the screwdriver blade into the screw slot and fold the masking tape up to stick the screw to the blade. The screw is then held in position on the driver and can be inserted upside down and at an angle. If possible it is much easier to start the screw off if you can make a small pilot hole somehow.
Another and better option would be to invest in a magnetic bit holder to hold the screws. This latter option will not work however with things such as brass screws.
Regards
Dave Stevens.
If in doubt call me (see main advert for number) and I will do the investigating for you.
Disclaimer. All advice above is given in goodwill with many years experience. We cannot guarantee however that your problems will be rectified so please, if in doubt call us before undertaking any works yourself.

Local Councillor and Resident, ANDREW GRAVELLS writes It’s always good to be able to welcome a new business into our area. And so I hope that ‘The Works’ is an instant success here, and goes on to generate a lot of new business for its advertisers. I live in our area, and I may be biased, but I reckon that it’s one of the best parts of Gloucestershire to live in. We have some seriously good Community facilities here. The Abbeydale Sports and Community Centre is a real hive of activity. There is always so much going on there, ranging from activities of all kinds for young people, to less energetic events for those of us who aren’t quite so young. If you’ve never visited the Centre, why don’t you just drop in and take a look inside. The Notice Boards are always full of interesting things to do. As a local Councillor I am aware of the increasing number of people who live on their own these days. And I hear about people who sometimes feel isolated in the more remote and rural parts of the County. In areas like ours though there is so much going on, that anyone who could do with a bit of company, or wish to volunteer to help in any of our voluntary organisations, will always be made to feel really welcome at the Abbeydale Sports and Community Centre or at our local pubs. The Centre by the way, is just behind Morrisons, down past the Doctors and Vets, right next to the Play Area. Our two local pubs, The Ridge and Furrow, and The Turmot- Hoer are also great meeting places for people in our area, and they serve a great range of soft drinks for anyone who wishes to avoid alcohol. Saturday July 16
th sees taking place what promises to be one of the best Community events being
held here during 2011. The local Police and I have been working with the City Council, the Abbeydale Sports and Community centre, and the Groups which meet there, to put on a ‘Police and Community’ Fun Day. The idea is that we bring the Community together , with presentations from the local Community Police officers, Dog handlers, along with Sporting events and other displays by local voluntary groups and clubs. It’ll run from 10am till about 4pm, and take place on the fields around the Centre. There’s also the possibility that the Police helicopter will make an appearance. Hope to see you there !
Andrew .
