OFAA gG Fuse-Links for Overloadand Short-Circuit ProtectionOFAA fuse-links are designed to meet all the requirements ofthe modern industrial installations and electrical power plants.Their breaking capacity is sufficient even at the highest short-circuit levels. The breaking capacity of OFAA fuses is over 100 kA, whenservice voltage is the same as rated voltage and frequency is50 Hz. This is valid for all fuse sizes.
OFAM aM Fuses for Short-CircuitProtection in Motor CircuitsOFAM aM fuse links provide reliable and fast short-circuitprotection for motor circuit equipment and cables. Breakingcapacity is 100 kA. Overload protection for motor circuit isprovided with an overload relay and a contactor. At high overload currents, the aM fuse link is faster than thegG fuse link, and at motor starting currents, the aM fuse link isslower than the gG fuse link.OFAM aM fuse link is now available even in IEC size 00 .Rated voltage is 690 V for all fuse sizes.
How a Fuse-Link Limits CurrentTo prevent danger, and damage to equipment and circuits, short circuit currents need to be intercepted extremely quickly. It is generally the quick temperature rise generated within theshort circuit current that causes equipment to breakdown.Fuse links are designed to react to this temperature rise and, therefore, their current limiting capability is very good.Fuse links contain granulated quartz which binds thetemperature generated in the arc created by short circuit. Atthe same time the pressure rises inside the fuse link and thefusing element ruptures.

Fuse Protection - Easy and Reliable
Superior Current Limiting CapabilityFuse links have an excellent current limiting capability. Withstandard cable and apparatus dimensions the protection isassured for contactors and overload relays. Short-circuit capacityremains very small.
High Safety FactorVisual inspection of a circuit clearly reveals when a fuse link hasbeen removed. Thus, service and maintenance can be safelycarried out.Fuses are tested according to IEC 947 standard requirements.IEC 947 type 2 coordination withstands up to 690 V. Type 2coordination states that all apparatus in the circuit must be in fulloperation after short circuit. Fuse protection guarantees thiswithout over dimensioning the apparatus.
Economical InstallationLife time costs of fuse systems are low. Fuse links which canwithstand a high fault level and fault current are available ateconomical prices. After tripping, only the fuse-link has to bechanged.Because the fuse links can be rapidly and easily replaced, plantdown-time and maintenance is substantially reduced with a fuselink system.
Simple SelectivityFuse links provide a simple procedure for selecting the right fusetype for your installation, without complicated calculations. Fusesprevent "blackouts". Only the fuse nearest a fault trips withoutupstream fuses (feeders or mains) beeing affected. Fuses thusprovide selective coordination.
The selectivity, see the pictures below and on previous page: Onthe feeder side the I2t
pre-arc value (in the picture fuse size 160 A)
has to be bigger than I2ttotal
on the load side(in the picture fusesize 100 A). I2t-values are on page 11 for OFAA- fuses and onpage 15 for OFAM- fuses.

Fuses Are Key Componentsto Reliable Protection
A reliable protection is cost-effectively achieved with fuselinksAcc. to IEC 947-4-1 standard regarding motorstarters, certain coordination categories are definedto protection.
Coordination type1 allows damage to contactorand thermal overload relay after a short-circuit.Operator must inspect starter afterwards andchange the apparatus. Failure to do this means thecircuit is not protected against overload which canlead to motor damage and cable fire.
Coordination type 2 guarantees that the starter isin full operation after short-circuit.
The fuse-links are protected acc. to coordinationtype 2 category even at 690 V. With breakers, toachieve coordination type 2, problems ariseparticularly at higher voltages. Generally can besaid that at higher voltages, the fuse system isstronger.
Fuse-Link OperatesIndependently of Corrosion
Because the fusing elements operate in a cylinder, they are not affected by their surroundings. Thus their protecting characteristicsremain unchanged year after year.Unlike circuit breakers, corrosioncannot damage the inside of the fuse link.
Fuse links are designed for differentenvironments:
• Universal fuses for installations under normalconditions.
• Fuse links for harsher environments, industrial fuses, provided with an extra thicksilver coating (20 µm).
