Zeliszow

Just outside the village: a football field,

a bus stop, a few houses, fields and a

church.

More theatre than church, all in wood,

with warm colours and graceful arches.

The sun’s beams are like a sign that an

empty church is never forsaken by God.

Here once sounded the words of Martin

Luther’s German bible and Bach’s St.

Matthew Passion...

Shiraishi

The road comes to a dead end at

the Shiraishi gypsum mine: a totally

overgrown, rusty and dilapidated factory

on a steep slope.

The image emerges and is blurred again

through rain and windscreen wipers.

After waiting half an hour in vain for drier

weather, we crawl over the wall. Then the

typhoon bursts in all its violence...

Even buiten het dorp: een voetbalveld,

een bushalte, enkele huizen, akkers en

een kerkje.

Meer theater dan kerk, helemaal van hout,

met warme kleuren en zwierige bogen.

De zonnestralen zijn als een teken dat

een leegstaande kerk nooit door God

zelf verlaten wordt. Hier klonken ooit

het woord van Martin Luther en Bachs

Matthäus-Passion…

Shiraishi

De weg loopt dood aan de gipsmijn van

Shiraishi: een compleet overwoekerde,

verroeste en bouwvallige fabriek tegen

een steile helling.

Regen en ruitenwissers doen het beeld

opdoemen en vervagen. Na een half uur

tevergeefs wachten op droger weer kruipen

we over de muur. Dan barst de tyfoon in

alle hevigheid los...

Five hundred years of history, with periods of

glory, devastating fires and reconstruction.

The stock exchange was built in 1531, when

Antwerp was the commercial and cultural

centre of Western Europe.

Not till thirty years later did London build

its own exchange, followed shortly after by

Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The Antwerp

building burned down twice. What we see

today is a reconstruction from 1872.

From the balcony I imagine myself looking

down on a motley mass of merchants,

shippers, brokers and bankers. Germans,

Italians, Spaniards and Portuguese hurry

around, negotiating with each other in small

groups. But I also make out exotic figures from

distant corners of the world. The talk is of

shipments, weights, volumes, exchange rates,

delivery times and advances. Names of ships

are called with departure dates, destinations

and available space. Hands go up, deals are

closed.

In a side street off the square stand the

traders’ horses. The servants crowd together

laughing. It starts to rain. The traders take

shelter under the arcades, the servants pull

up their collars.

Today the exchange has a roof. The offices

and assembly rooms are empty. High up

in the building, in the ridge of the roof,

I find a name: ‘Sandow Piet 1899, 1901,

1900’. Who was he? A craftsman, a trader,

a vagabond or a fellow urban explorer before

the term was invented?

Als niemand kijkt, houden

de spoken wedstrijdjes

looprekrijden door de gangen

van het hospitaal. Ook de

geesten van krakers dolen hier

rond, eindeloos de rommel

opruimend die hun benevelde

alter ego’s achterlieten.

En ergens dwalen de angstige

zielen van hen die ooit op het

toilet zonder privacy moesten

zitten!

Hier overnachtte Mozart

toen hij op tournee was.

Luchtvaartpionier Louis

Blériot vond er een bed na

een noodlanding in een

nabijgelegen veld. De laatste

jaren woonde de kasteelheer

hier alleen. Hij woonde in een

slaapkamer en de bijkeuken.

Na zijn dood mijmerden de

beestenkoppen vrolijk verder

over hun roemrijke verleden.

Een kasteelheer met smaak of

een melkboer met centen?

Vijfhonderd jaar geschiedenis, met periodes

van glorie, verwoestende branden en

heropbouw. De handelsbeurs werd in 1531

gebouwd, toen Antwerpen het commerciële en

culturele centrum van West-Europa was.

Dertig jaar nadien bouwde Londen zijn beurs,

kort daarna gevolgd door Rotterdam en

Amsterdam. Het Antwerpse gebouw brandde

twee keer af. Wat we vandaag nog zien, is een

reconstructie uit 1872.

Vanaf het balkon zie ik beneden een bonte

massa kooplieden, schippers, makelaars en

bankiers. Duitsers, Italianen, Spanjaarden,

Portugezen en ook enkele exotische figuren

uit verre windstreken onderhandelen met

elkaar in kleine groepjes. Er wordt gepraat

over scheepsladingen, gewichten, volumes,

wisselkoersen, levertermijnen en voorschotten.

Namen van boten worden afgeroepen met

afvaartdatum, bestemming en nog beschikbare

ruimte. Handen gaan omhoog, deals worden

gesloten.

In een zijstraat van het plein staan de paarden

van de handelaars. De knechten troepen

lachend samen. Het begint te regenen.

De handelaars schuilen onder de overdekte

galerijen, de knechten zetten hun kraag recht.

Nu heeft de beurs een dak. De kantoortjes en

vergaderzalen staan leeg. Hoog in het gebouw,

in de nok van het dak, vind ik een naam:

‘Sandow Piet 1899, 1901, 1900’.

Wie was hij? Een ambachtsman, handelaar,

vagebond of een fellow urban explorer avant la

lettre?

round the hospital corridors.

The spirits of squatters also

wander round, constantly

cleaning up the clutter their

obscure egos left behind.

And there roam the terrified

souls of all those who ever

had to sit on the toilet with no

privacy!

Hunters Castle

Mozart spent the night

here when on tour. Aviation

pioneer Louis Blériot also

found a bed here after an

emergency landing in a

nearby field. In recent years,

the castle’s owner lived here

alone in one bedroom and the

neighbouring pantry. Now that

he is dead, the animal heads

continue to merrily muse

about their glorious past.
