managers and staff, in June, ABA family heads identified short-term goals for their operational areas. Please visit the ABA Destination 2010 website, where you will find ABA’s revised strategy map and 2007/08 family goals and measures – www.csus.edu/aba/destination2010/d2010.htm. When you review ABA’s 2007/08 goals, you will notice a continued commitment to staff development and engagement. And, excellent service, effective communication, and transparency shape everything we do and will always be focal points for planning. This year, we’ve placed a new emphasis on process improvement. With an engaged and competent staff, this is where we can make the biggest impact. Process improvement can occur through the complex implementation of new technologies, or the simple streamlining of processes or services – whatever results in a more coherent and fluid process for our students and other constituents. Processes are best improved with input from those most intimately involved. So, the key to success here is ABA staff professionals. Whether we are defining methods for delivering service to faculty, serving students at the front-lines, streamlining technology to provide remote access to services, or simplifying processes, this is where you come in. Beginning in spring 2004 when Destination 2010 was launched, ABA set a clear vision for the future. Now, we are just over two years away from our goal. I appreciate your contributions and commitment and look forward to another productive year ahead, as we help to lay the foundation for Sac State’s future.

    Stephen Garcia October 2007

Financial Services is pleased to announce the appointment of Darlene Gillum as the ASI director of Finance & Administration effective August 1, 2007. Gillum has 16 years experience in business and financial management, previously serving as

the Comptroller/ Contracts Manager for Criminal Information Sharing Alliance, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation that serves a multi-state alliance of law enforcement agencies. Gillum holds an MBA with an emphasis in finance, and a BS/BA with a double major in Finance and Management. Gillum chose Sac State because, “The opportunity to work with students who are interested in furthering their education is something I find very rewarding.” Please join us in welcoming Darlene Gillum to the campus.

The fall season brings the University a fresh generation of students excited about their living and learning possibilities here at Sacramento State. I would like to say thank you to all ABA staff professionals for preparing the campus for our students as we look forward to another promising year. I hope that you will take the time to review the 2006/07 ABA Annual Report of Accomplishments www.csus.edu/aba/ and appreciate the scope and impact of our work over the last year. Although the report is a comprehensive summary of ABA’s major projects, it does not come close to describing the many important tasks performed by ABA’s staff professionals that influence these results. The work you perform daily is the driving factor behind all of ABA’s accomplishments. Typically, the University begins its planning process for the upcoming academic year a semester or so in advance, and this is true for ABA as well. The ABA Administrative Council met throughout the spring to refine ABA’s long-term goals and identify major focus areas for 2007/08. Collaborating with family

ABA staff professionals join S T A R T This fall, ABA is off to a good “start,” with representatives from each of ABA’s seven families appointed to ABA’s strategy team, START. The newly expanded membership of START (Strategy Team: Achieving Results Together) is hoped to strengthen the link between ABA staff and Destination 2010. START will serve as a network, spreading news about ABA activities, and gathering valuable feedback to help inform decisions. START will focus on staff programs, especially those centered on recognition. START will also be asked to report monthly on important family activities and achievements that may ultimately be featured in newsletters and other publications. As START members, staff reps will

    ABA’s balanced approach to Destination2010

How does ABA balance a diverse range of services and priorities in support of Destination 2010? The answer is – Balanced Scorecard! BSC, a simple but effective strategic framework, organizes ABA’s long-term goals into four major categories that

drive success -- People, Processes, Customers, and Stewardship & Image.

People: Focused on the workforce, this is considered the essential foundation of everything we do. ABA’s people goals promote staff development, engagement and success.

Processes: This perspective refers to simplifying, streamlining, automating and otherwise improving ABA business processes and services to meet customer needs.

Customers: ABA has a broad “customer” base that includes not only faculty, staff and students, but our Chancellor’s Office, local and regional neighbors, the citizens of the state of California and many others. ABA “customer goals focus on standards of service excellence.

Stewardship & Image: ABA serves as the primary steward of University resources, providing oversight and guidance to safeguard assets and promote public trust. ABA’s stewardship goals emphasize compliance with the highest standards of financial and operational management.

have an opportunity to learn about quality improvement tools such as ABA’s Strategy Map based on the Balanced Scorecard model (see below). With this knowledge, the team will help promote division-wide understanding of ABA’s planning process. START members will

also serve on the ABA Destination 2010 Leadership Council during their two-year terms. START representatives are: Tim Bair (Facilities Services), Michelle Bianco (Business Operations), Tom Custer (Risk Management Services), Kem Gravenberg (Office of the Vice President for Administration), Theo Povondra (Financial Services) and Greg Revelez (Public Safety). START core members are: Gina Curry, Abbi Stone and Sarah Whyte.

Please support your family S T A R T representative. Keep them informed and in the loop.

reach their academic and professional goals. For Janice too, family and travel will play a major role. Very soon, she embarks on a road-trip to visit family, then across the U.S. to visit sites yet unseen. Upcoming plans for a 60-day South Pacific cruise with stops in Australia and New Zealand should alleviate any lingering nostalgia for the working life.

Additional ABA retirements this fall include: Hiram (Woody) Smallwood, Public Safety Dispatcher (12 years) and Ken Armas, Facilities Services Project Supervisor (6 years).

ABA fall 2007 retirees share milestones

“The Way We Were” topped the music charts, Sac State fees were $71 and the student union was but a dream. The year was 1974, and for three ABA staff professionals, it was a noteworthy one. That year, Liberato (Bert) Aguinaldo, Mary Jo Puthuff and Janice VanAlstyne were beginning their careers at Sacramento State. Fast forward to 2007 where 70’s tunes are old school classics, fees have multiplied 25 times over, and the Union just turned 30. This year, Bert, Mary Jo and Jan’s lives converge again at another exciting milestone – retirement. Important life changes aren’t always easy, even the good ones, but the rules for retirement have changed significantly since 1974 and these ABA professionals are ready for new challenges and opportunities awaiting them. Leaving the diverse community of Sac State will be an adjustment for Bert, who will miss the students and faculty; and even more, his close colleagues and the satisfaction of a hard day’s work. But now he will have more time to focus on important things like family and travel, with particular emphasis on quality time with his granddaughter. For Mary Jo, giving up the daily comfort of relationships cultivated over time will be hard, but she has plans in place for potential volunteer work scheduled around family, travel, jewelry-making, and go-cart racing. And that’s just to start! Janice, University alum, will miss the park-like campus setting, her long-time colleagues, and the pleasure of watching generations of students

leaders who must make the call, often with information not available to all, and considering all sides of a situation.

Leadership begins with … knowledge and ability, both of which are gained in the process of education. Great leaders must not only have an understanding of the world, but must be able to think clearly and make sound decisions based on proven principles.

Leadership is a topic of critical importance in today’s fast paced and continually changing world. This is especially true for Sacramento State, whose tag line “Leadership begins here” is significant not only for students, but for the entire University community. Leadership competency is a factor for insuring stability through patterns of change. And, already, predictions for an unprecedented generational shift in the workforce have come true. For ABA, this translates to a whole host of new and talented managers and a diverse new contingent of skilled and competent staff professionals. Together, they form the foundation for ABA’s future. This is the first in a series of articles that will explore leadership through the eyes of ABA’s managers and staff professionals. We hope the series will stimulate thought and help define those leadership qualities that are most significant to ABA’s success. ………………………………………………………………………………

Kirtland Stout, interim director of Risk Management & Business Continuity, is the first to share his thoughts on leadership. Here’s what Kirt has to say.

Leadership means … people succeeding through hard work that inspires and engenders trust. Good leaders help people see a vision and understand how important their work is to the outcome.

To be successful, a leader needs to … be passionate about what he is doing, be courteous, kind and empathetic, have the right set of ideas for the time and circumstance, and clearly communicate to move a cause forward on its own. It is important to know how to move people, gain their trust, help them understand their importance, and get them to work together.

Leaders can have an impact on the lives of others because … our jobs are a major part of our lives, so if our employment is not enjoyable, our lives are not enjoyable. One of the primary jobs of every leader is to improve the skills, abilities and confidence of subordinates, and prepare them to be leaders in their own right.

Everyone can be a leader… by speaking up and bringing up good ideas, so that ALL ideas are considered, remembering to support the

Leadership begins here means …“My duty is to perform my job to the very best of my

ability, and to improve myself and my

capabilities so that I am a better employee

tomorrow than I was yesterday. In addition, it is

important for me to stay abreast of what is

happening, consider the best interests of all

involved, and speak up when it is called for.”

Find out what staff professional Debra Deakin has to say about Sacramento State, ABA and the University’s Destination 2010 initiative. Compared to many, Debra is a relative newcomer, with just two years under her belt. But, as a budget analyst in ABA’s Budget Planning & Administration Office, she is already fully engaged in Destination 2010, contributing to the development of proformas for capital projects, such as student housing. To read the full article and previous staff perspectives, please visit the ABA website at www.csus.edu/aba/destination2010/d2010.htm.

ABA’s first Jeopardy game was launched at the fall 2007 ABA Staff Professionals meeting in November, engaging staff in a test of knowledge about ABA and University Destination 2010 strategies, goals and processes. The game was followed by reports on the current University budget status and the campaign to promote and integrate sustainability across a wide range of campus functions. Finally, staff teamed up to brainstorm ways to create a more welcoming and service-oriented environment for students. Results will be summarized and shared with University administrators. The ABA Staff Professionals meetings each semester help to keep staff informed, promote a team environment, and draw upon the knowledge, skills and creativity of every employee.

Close to 50 ABA staff professionals attended October 25’s ABA Coffee & Conversation with Vice President for Administration Steve Garcia. Discussion focused on current issues of interest, including the University and ABA’s budget and remedies for reducing potential impacts, the University’s political climate, and other topics of importance to staff, such as professional development, and possible methods for enhancing two-way communication. October’s event was the second in a series designed to encourage one-on-one dialogue with the vice president. All ABA staff members are invited to the next Coffee & Conversation scheduled for Thursday, January 17, 2008, 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Custodial Breakroom, Facilities Services. Managers are asked to grant release time for staff professionals who wish to attend.
