AAYT SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER NEWSLETTER AAYT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) - Saturday 18 TH November, 2017 Dear Members, Greetings! It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost a year since last year’s AGM and the election of your current committee. The six of us still have a year to go under our management position terms. All the Executive Committee roles are currently filled, but we do have nine Non-executive VACANCIES for General Committee members and we would warmly welcome NOMINATIONS to fill them. At least four more full-members on the Committee would be ideal. Whilst we have a talented and harmonious small team of six, having more people with diverse skills would certainly enhance the work of your active, effective and outcomes oriented Committee. We need people with promotional and IT skills and/or with an understanding of educational and training values to help move the AAYT forward. Your input on the AAYT Management Committee will help ensure a vibrant and responsive membership body in action: keeping members abreast of current information and maintaining a professional body recognised in its representation of an advanced therapeutic, healing practice of Yoga. Please consider nominating for an AAYT Committee position if you are willing to contribute your administrative skills, PR abilities and/or IT expertise. Most importantly, we need people with a passion for our field of Yoga Therapy - members who have ideas and practicality in helping us meet our collective and collaborative vision and goals. We NEED YOU! The Committee holds a monthly meeting via Skype, and sub-committees meet as required and mutually convenient. SVADYAYA: The AGM is a time for reflecting on the past year to examine what we’ve achieved, to consider what’s still to be done and to create opportunities for the future. The Committee has focused on: Re-establishing AAYT’s vision and strategic goals that ensure opportunities for our members Creating a series of active working parties

AAYT SEPTEMBER /OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

AAYT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) - Saturday 18TH November, 2017

Dear Members, Greetings! The Committee has focused on:

Re-establishing AAYT’s vision and strategic goals that ensure opportunities for our members

Creating a series of active working parties

Producing promotional material to be readily used by our members Establishing consultative processes with our Training Providers Developing a workable policy framework for current and future management Participating in events that highlight the role of the Association Networking with colleagues, Advisors, Training Providers and our International

affiliates Re-affirming the AAYT’s position nationally and internationally.

In summary - re-establishing the Association’s credibility and putting the AAYT (an Association for, and directed by, its members) firmly and squarely back on the MAP to represent quality and excellence in Yoga Therapy. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Saturday 18th November 18, 2017. You will soon receive formal notice and the opportunity to nominate for a vacant (non-executive) position on the AAYT Committee. We will be developing opportunities for AGM participation by SKYPE and are looking at holding pre-meeting workshops in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to create member Sanghas and to enable cluster participation in the AGM. Please email Robyn Clarke [email protected] if you would like to propose a specific workshop activity. This Newsletter edition continues to provide you with information on Continuing Education opportunities, reinvigorating retreats, promotion with Yogamate and the scope to work with the RCD Foundation in providing Yoga Therapy for children with brain cancer. Keep reading also for information about the NDIS roll-out and AAYT’s position in registering as a recognised provider. Unfortunately the post-conference seminar in Sydney with Dr. Ananda following the International Yoga Teachers’ Association’s 50 year celebration has been cancelled. Dr Ananda, a valued member of AAYT’s Board of Advisors, will nevertheless be speaking at the IYTA conference. The details are provided further down in this newsletter. Happy reading! Enjoy the new Spring season. Remember to put the afternoon of Saturday 18th November in your diary for AAYT – AGM. Namaste!

The NDIS and Yoga Therapy for people with disabilities The AAYT Committee is considering applying to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) to become a Registered Provider so as to give people with disability who are covered by the scheme access to yoga therapy. The Committee would like to hear from any members who are currently working with disabled clients or who would like to in the future. Also, if you have any experience working with the NDIS your comments and/or your assistance in pursuing this goal will be most helpful. The NDIS aims to provide “all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent or significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to achieve an ordinary life”. The scheme commenced in October 2016 and is being progressively rolled out over three years. There are separate agreements with each State Government.

The person with the disability will be able to choose their provider for the services they

would like, and use funds from their NDIS allocated budget for payment. At present,

yoga is not a recognised nor is it a registered therapy under the national scheme.

Providers of services under the NDIS are registered as either individuals or organisations. To register, providers need to demonstrate:

Their suitability to provide services to the disabled Ability to meet the Quality and Safeguards requirements Whether they have appropriate qualifications and registration with an

appropriate National Body The services they can provide and who they wish to offer them to Their understanding of client goals, preferences and objectives How to market the services to target clients

A ‘Guide to Suitability’ of Providers is available at NDIA Module 4 - Guide to Suitability 22 June 2017 (PDF 773KB).

The NDIS is still in a development stage with some teething issues and anomalies in the system already identified. For example, a disabled client can have a massage, but under the scheme this can only be provided by a physiotherapist not a massage therapist or Shiatsu practitioner.

Individual registration for yoga therapists is likely to be very difficult. The Committee is hoping to build a team of AAYT members who can work with Advisors and others to promote the efficacy of yoga therapy for a range of disabilities. The end goal will be to register AAYT and therefore support practitioner involvement. The primary work required will be to familiarise ourselves with the NDIS and its clients, as well as lobbying disability groups, NDIS officers and politicians.

Can we make this happen for AAYT? Yes we can.
