Denise Watson has been a reporter for The Virginian-Pilot for 25 years and spent one muggy one at the Tampa Bay Times in Florida. She has been privileged to write about the famous celebrities, such as Alan Alda, and cultural icons like James Farmer, Maya Angelou and Betty Friedan. She’s also written about the infamous, including one of America’s most notorious spy rings led by John Walker Jr. She has won national and state honors in Virginia and Florida, including a first place honor from the Society of Feature Journalists. Her six-part series on the fight to integrate Norfolk schools won first place from the Virginia Press Association and was nominated for the Pulitzer. She is a Norfolk native, Norfolk State University graduate, and mother of two.

President’s Ponderings: February 2017

We began our year with a BANG (or maybe a thud!). January’s meeting found us caring for JoAnn after she fell in the

hallway just before our meeting. Although I have made jokes at her expense to her, I will say publically that we have all

been concerned but that she reports feeling better. This just goes to remind us that our sisters in AAUW are a great

resource for us if something untoward happens to us. Never be hesitant about asking for our help (yes, I know, we are

all independent women who HATE to ask for help—do it anyway!)

After we got JoAnn taken care of, our branch meeting was wonderful! We celebrated not only our new designation of

“Navigator Branch” but ,also, that we overshot the minimum requirement to do so! Thank you, generous sisters! Our

donations will be used to help women and girls in the best possible way! As a treat for being so good, our own Ginny

Werner led us in chair yoga. I’m glad that we switched our meeting around to feature this last on the agenda—we were

all so relaxed that I don’t think we would have made any sense!

Three of us made the trip to Lobby Day in Richmond. We joined 26 other AAUW members to talk to our delegates and

senators as well as a talk with our Lt. Governor. It was a whirlwind of activity and perhaps our visit will make our state

government more responsive to our wants.

Last, but by no means least, is all of the activity surrounding the 4th annual STEM4Girls conference to be held on March

11 at the Virginia Beach campus of TCC. I have to brag about the planning committee: these are women who get things

done! We are, of course, counting on all of our members coming together for this wonderful day! Sign up to volunteer.

You’ll be glad you did!

I’ll see you all on February 18—remember that this is the meeting that begins at 9:30am (for our informal social time),

and continues with the meeting (at 10:00). We’ll end with a salad bar, where we all bring something and we end up

with a delicious meal! We’ll be done by 12:30, with clean up ending at 1:00 pm.

The Virginia Beach Branch has become the sixth Branch Navigator of the Charting the Course

Campaign IN THE COUNTRY! And because of you, the Charting the Course Campaign exceeded its $1

million goal! Our gift bolsters programs across the country to empower women and girls. A better future is on

the horizon, and AAUW Virginia Beach is navigating the way by giving to AAUW through unrestricted gifts.

The requirement for the branch navigator status was that at least 10 members would give or pledge a total of

$25,000 or more in unrestricted funds. We more than exceeded the number of participants with 20-25

members having contributed nearly $30,000. The number of donors exceeds that of all the other branches in

AAUW. Congratulations to us!

Twenty-five participants (including a family member) from nine branches invaded Richmond on February 1 to make our voices heard to our lawmakers—and to listen to what they had to tell us. Thanks to everyone for making the trip and for bringing along boundless intelligence, commitment, and passion.

Both before and after Lobby Day I’ve heard suggestions from some members about expanding our public policy efforts and providing more opportunities for members to become involved. If any of you have any suggestions, please send them to me by March 1, 2017. We are also hoping to solicit additional ideas from the upcoming District meetings so we can discuss any suggestions at the next State Board meeting. Thanks again one and all.”

Career Day Coming Soon!

Volunteer to Inspire Middle School Students with your Career!

and work to fulfill our branch mission to educate!

Corporate Landing Middle School Guidance Department has invited AAUW Virginia Beach to their career day on April 6, 2017 from 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Victoria Lang, Career Fair Coordinator, explains, ”Through our academic and career guidance lessons in the classroom, we encourage students to prepare for their future beyond middle and high school. In order to expose students to various professional fields and potential careers, we are asking for volunteers to set up information tables and share their experiences… Thank you for your time and consideration of this worthwhile endeavor. We look forward to hearing from you.” Our volunteers arrive at Corporate Landing Middle School April 6th by 9:30 a.m. We provide students (grades 6-8) with handouts/pertinent information regarding their occupation and career experiences. We, also, enjoy our AAUW VB sister volunteers. AAUW Virginia Beach volunteers have enjoyed participating in Career Day the past two years. Talking with the middle school boys and girls is fun. Sharing our professional lives…past or present…is invigorating. Free lunch is served! Don’t miss the fun! PENNIES FOR PRESCRIPTIONS!

Put your pennies where your heart is!

Our branch has donated $72 since September to support Virginia Beach’s Beach Health Clinic. Those who are able to pay the clinic small amounts for their prescriptions are charged $3 monthly for prescribed medications. Accordingly, we have provided 24 months of patient prescriptions since September 2016. Last year by May we donated enough to provide 137 months of prescriptions. Let’s ramp up our contributions! Can you give more? Don’t pay for purchases with change, save all your change for Pennies for Prescriptions! We, also, need a member to coordinate Pennies for Prescriptions. To volunteer, please, contact our Community Outreach Chairs Dottie Holtz ([email protected]) or Marianne Stanley ([email protected])! It does not require a lot of time, answers our mandate of philanthropy and means so much to the folks who, otherwise, may not get the medicines they need. New By-laws keep us in order!

Neola Waller, our By-Law Chair, keeps our AAUW Virginia Beach by-laws as they should be! Sometimes that

job is tedious and must feel thankless. But we are full of appreciation for Neola accomplishing this and much

more for our branch. Neola has updated our by-laws to comply with new national and state requirements.

ANNUAL

Little Theater of Virginia Beach FUNDRAISER

The annual Little Theater of Virginia Beach fundraiser will be a matinee performance of the comedy Calendar Girls. The play was adapted from the 2003 movie of the same name, starring Helen Mirren, and is based on a true story of a group of Yorkshire women who produced a nude calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research. (Aren’t you glad we are only going to ask you to purchase tickets for our fundraiser and not pose for a calendar! ;o) )

We will be going to see this play on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets at $26 each will be available at branch meetings March-April. You can pay with card or cash. These tickets always make great gifts. If you wish, you could take several and sell them to your family, friends and co-workers, as we did with the florist and car wash coupons in the past. And we will keep with the tradition of having the branch host a reception in the theater lobby after the performance where we can mingle with our guests and the cast and crew. Branch members will provide the wine and finger food snacks – you will be asked to sign up to bring something during our winter and spring month meetings.

Calendar Girls

When Annie's husband John dies of leukemia, she and best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new settee in the local hospital waiting room. They manage to persuade four fellow WI members to pose nude with them for an "alternative" calendar, with a little help from hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence. The news of the women's charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and hordes of press soon descend on the small village of Knapeley in the Yorkshire Dales. The calendar is a success, but Chris and Annie's friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame.

It’s That$$$$$$$ Taxing Time of Year

The Association publishes the following in AAUW National Dues, Fees, and Tax Deductibility online. “AAUW national membership dues are $49. Of that amount, $46 is tax deductible [emphasis added] as a charitable contribution, and $3 is not deductible because it supports the AAUW Action Fund’s section 501(c)(4) Lobby Corps and get-out-the- vote activities. Student affiliate dues are $17. Of that amount, $16 is tax deductible, and $1 is not deductible. AAUW National Life Membership is $980 and is fully tax deductible. Note: [Our] Branch/state portions of dues are not tax deductible... Remember, the tax deduction relates specifically to the member’s personal federal tax return for the amount of the dues allocated by AAUW to support the programs of our charitable 501(c) (3) organization. The IRS does not require receipts for tax-deductible dues or contributions of $250 or less.” Refer any questions to your tax advisor.

And Some More on Tax Deductions

In addition to being able to deduct a portion of AAUW national membership dues on personal federal tax returns, all contributions to AAUW Funds or to any of the specific funds that are included within AAUW Funds (Legal Advocacy Fund, Educational Opportunities, Tech Savvy, Public Policy, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Leadership Programs) are fully tax deductible as a charitable gift on your personal federal tax return Remember to refer any questions to your tax advisor.

… AAUW National News…

Dear AAUW Member, January 24, 2017

I hope you all had a restful holiday season filled with fun, family, and friends. As we settle back into our AAUW lives, I would like to update you on several items. Our search for AAUW’s new CEO is in process with several good candidates in the pipeline. Things appear to be moving smoothly to fulfill our intent of having our new CEO in place and introduced to AAUW at large at our National Convention this June. Additionally, for the past two years the AAUW Board of Directors has been conducting an organizational review and analysis regarding the long-term sustainability of AAUW programs and their alignment with our mission. Part of that process was the formation of the Resource Sustainability Task Force in February 2015, composed of current and former board members. As the result of the two-year analysis we identified the need for focusing AAUW efforts and programs. To this end the board enacted budget priorities for the next fiscal year that realign budget priorities with mission priorities. This included reorganization of some departments and positions within AAUW. Healthy organizations regularly analyze their operations, and you may rest assured that AAUW will continue to provide strong advocacy in accordance with the public policy platform adopted by members, a robust funding of fellowships and grants, and leadership development and programs for women and girls now and in the future. We are rapidly approaching the opening of AAUW’s National Election, and I remind you all how important it is that you use your voice in this process. Candidate bios and videos will be available online as of January 30 as will the call for appointed candidates to the AAUW board. Please encourage individuals you think would serve AAUW well in this role, and of course, consider yourself! If a board position is not of interest, then perhaps you’ll consider serving on a national committee this year. Either way, AAUW needs you! A by-laws amendment regarding the degree requirement for AAUW membership eligibility has once again been proposed, so we know you’ll want to engage in robust conversation around that issue in person as well as online. As always, encourage members to vote so their voice and viewpoint are heard! State conventions will occur over the next few months, and you are encouraged to attend and learn what’s happening in your state and how it impacts your work with AAUW. We also hope to see many of you at AAUW’s National Convention in Washington, D.C., June 14-17. Once again, AAUW will storm Capitol Hill to make certain our elected officials know that AAUW’s eyes are upon the work they do, and to ensure that women’s issues remain at the forefront of the national conversation. I do hope you join us for this always impressive event, and for the comradery and learning opportunities that the convention itself provides.

Once a month we get up early and hie ourselves off to a restaurant to discuss a book we have previously selected. The restaurants vary from month to month, and we are always open to finding ones we haven't visited previously. The only requirements are that the place is reasonably quiet (so we can liven it up), serves good food at a reasonable price, and we can get to it. We have selected the books to be read from now through next June. Any member who wanted to do so named one or more books and we, literally, drew the winners out of not a hat, but ... This auspicious event takes place on the 1st Thursday of every month at 7:30 a.m. September-November and 8am January-March except when it doesn't because we have to change it for some reason, such as a holiday.
