Of the 17.6 million undergrads enrolled in higher education:

Challenges for Non-Traditional Students

In a recent survey, the following reasons were cited for not completing educational objectives:

30% - Managing commitments (such as balancing work, family and school)

26% - Managing finances13% - Effectiveness (maintaining momentum and

seeing complex projects through to completion)

Only 28% of full-time adult students and only 5% of part-time adult students finish their college studies.

Traditional Team TeachingTwo or more teachers actively share the

instruction of the content and skills in the same classroom at the same time with the same group of students.

Collaborative Team TeachingTeam teachers work together to teach the

material not by the usual monologue, but by exchanging and discussing ideas and theories in front of the learners.

Parallel InstructionIn this setting, the class is divided into two

groups and each teacher is responsible for teaching the same material to her/his smaller group. A key feature of Parallel Instruction is that teachers can roam and give students individualized support.

Differentiated Split ClassA class with more than one teacher is divided

into smaller groups according to learning needs. Instructors provide their respective group with the instruction required to meet their learning needs.

Monitoring TeacherOne teacher assumes the responsibility for

instructing the entire class. The other teacher circulates the room and monitors student understanding and behavior.

Complementary SupportiveOne teacher is responsible for teaching the

content to the students. The other teacher takes charge of providing follow-up activities on related topics or on study skills.
