Today, we are extended…Technology!

enables an extension of the self into the digital world.

Psychology!is the paradigm through which we can understand these extensions.

Motivation!is derived from the unconscious, and is played out through consciousness.

Online Interaction!largely appeals to the outward, performing aspects of the ego.

Our Active Online Identities!are both intrasubjective and intersubjective.

It’s the psychology, stupid.!

The internal world is comprised of relationships. How you see yourself. How you imagine others see you. This is called intrapsychic.

!!Freud’s tripartite psyche is still helpful:

id ego super-ego

!!

Online interaction is the domain of the ego… yet is dictated by unconscious relational forces

The Relational

Psyche!

The key to ego fulfilment is the recognition of the other

Page 9: Aaron Balick

Psychologically, we discover ourselves between

ourselves and others.

“To recognise is to affirm, validate, acknowledge, know, accept, understand,

empathise, take in, tolerate, appreciate, see, identify with, find familiar, love”

Persona!

“a kind of mask, designed on the one hand to make a definite impression on others, and on the other, to conceal the true nature of the individual”

C.G. Jung

When one identifies with their persona, “one no longer knows himself.”

“False Self”!

“The false self is set up to protect the true self - to respond to challenges in the environment - the false self essentially takes up the role of social compliance.”

D.W. Winnicott

“there are those who can be themselves and who also can act, whereas there are others who can only act, and who are completely at a loss when in in a role, and when not being appreciated or applauded”

Page 16: Aaron Balick

There is no single self: only presentations of aspects of self.

Egos are PerformativeIdentity!

the stories we tell ourselves & others, the links we post, our community identifications, etc.

How we show up!to others and our desired images of ourselves

We are divided!so we need to justify our conflicting urges and desires

The content of how we show up online!is based on a complex process that is synthesised and displayed by the ego

Who we are when we are online!is intrapsychic, interpersonal, and most of all, outward facing

What’s the last book you read?

Or, more accurately: Who are you, right here, right now,

in front of all these people? How do you want to see yourself, how do you want others to see you? What part of you are you raising up and what part do you keep

hidden? Where is your private self and where is your public self?
