During its meeting on Monday, Feb. 29, the AAOS Board of Directors appoint-ed the chair of the 2017 Nominating

Committee, adopted a Clinical Practice Guide-line (CPG) on the Management of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and voted to support the Choosing Wisely initiative and refer the public and patients to AAOS-prepared resources at the OrthoGuidelines website (www.orthoguidelines.org). It also presented certifi cates to several retiring Board members and one Coun-cil Chair, whose terms end with the 2016 An-nual Meeting, recognizing the efforts of those individuals on behalf of the AAOS.

The Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) is a patient-centered, team-based model of

care coordination designed to guide patients through the complete surgi-cal experience, starting with the de-cision to undergo surgery and con-cluding with discharge and return to function. In a time of increasing em-phasis on bundled payments, such as the U.S. Centers for Medicare &

Medicaid Services (CMS) Compre-hensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model, the PSH, an initiative developed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and Pre-mier Inc., may assist physicians in the transition to bundled payment systems while retaining an emphasis on value, patient satisfaction, and reduced costs.

Following a series of literature

reviews to outline and develop the process, the fi rst phase of the PSH initiative ran from July 2014 through November 2015. During Phase One, 44 healthcare organiza-tions from across the United States worked together to develop and evaluate the PSH model. Of those, 73 percent successfully launched a

The Academy on Tuesday un-veiled its 2016 public service announcement (PSA) cam-

paign, which will be distributed to more than 9,000 media outlets across the country. This year’s mul-timedia program—television, radio, and print PSAs—warns Americans on how to prevent serious injuries and promotes the following:• The dangers of distracted walking;• The importance of safe, proper

ladder use; • The signifi cance of bicycle-riders

and drivers sharing the road; and • Early intervention for spine-

related impairment

“The American Academy of Or-thopaedic Surgeons champions the interests of patients by promoting and advancing optimal musculo-skeletal health, injury prevention, and the highest quality patient treat-ment and care,” said AAOS First Vice-President Gerald R. Williams Jr, MD. “This year’s PSAs highlight four important safety topics aimed at elevating public awareness—from sprains, tears, and fractures to get-ting the proper treatment for spine-related impairment.

Governor Rick Perry Speaks at PAC Luncheon ELIZABETH FASSBENDER

On Wednesday, March 2, 2016, former governor Rick Perry spoke to supporters

of the Orthopaedic Political Ac-tion Committee (PAC) during the annual PAC luncheon at the 2016 AAOS Annual Meeting. Mr. Perry, who served as the 47th governor of Texas from 2000 to 2015, was a candidate for the Republican nomi-nation in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. He also served as chairman

of the Republican Governors As-sociation and had been outspoken on issues related to health care and tort reform. In addition to discuss-ing issues like federalism, Mr. Perry reminded PAC supporters of the importance of being involved in the political process and that their engagement in the PAC is integrally important to the future of the prac-tice of medicine.

“I promise you [that if you are not

engaged in the process], the powers that are out there on the other side are going to raise the money,” Mr. Perry stated. “And when it comes time to make decisions that are going to affect your practice of medicine, you’re not going to be at the table.”

Before starting in public service, Mr. Perry was commissioned as an

Gerald R. Williams Jr, MD, Takes the Helm JENNIE MCKEE

When Gerald R. Williams Jr, MD, delivered his incom-ing presidential address to

the fellowship during yesterday’s Ceremonial Meeting, he made it clear that sustaining and encourag-ing unity in the orthopaedic profes-sion would be a major focus in the coming year.

With a large contingent of his own family members in attendance, Dr. Williams emphasized the chal-lenges and benefi ts of maintaining a close-knit orthopaedic community, drawing inspiration from Charles A. Rockwood Jr, MD, his residency chair, fellowship director, and men-tor, who began his tenure as AAOS president in 1984.

More than 30 years ago, Dr. Rockwood spelled out six key areas involved in building and pre-serving unity in the orthopaedic pro-

fession: communication and trust, fellowship certifi cation, the resident and young orthopaedic surgeon, research funding, socioeconomic and legislative engagement, and education.

“All of these have been addressed in many ways since 1984,” noted Dr. Williams. “We have achieved a great deal and our Academy’s many parts are well integrated and strong; however, there is much left to be done if we are to remain unifi ed within our profession, which I be-lieve is more critical today than ever before.”

A history of leadershipDr. Williams, an orthopaedic sur-geon specializing in the shoulder, practices at the Rothman Institute at

Roger T. Staubach may best be known as one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of

the National Football League (NFL), but the perseverance he displayed in his career with the Dallas Cowboys extended beyond the football fi eld to his personal life and to several successful business enterprises. As the Presidential Guest Speaker at the 2016 AAOS Annual Meeting, he

spoke about leadership, trust, and teamwork, and related those themes to his various careers in the military, football, and real estate.

Like many athletes, Mr. Staubach has had many opportunities to inter-act with orthopaedic surgeons.

“It’s a pleasure to be here,” he said, “especially to thank you for your talent. I was at Purcell High School when I broke my right hand,

and that was my fi rst visit to the doctor for an injury. Later, when I was at the Naval Academy, I was chasing a fl y ball in the outfi eld and I tripped and fell and dislocated my left shoulder. That was the begin-ning of a chronic dislocation. I fi nal-ly had it operated on. I don’t have full movement, but fortunately, as
