Engineering Sciences
• Technology has a strong link to mathematics and the natural sciences, especially physics and chemistry.
• Technical applications have contributed to strengthening and expanding the scientific foundation of technology.
• Fields of engineering science closely related to mechanical engineering and structural engineering include dynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, thermodynamics and materials science.
• By making use of these fields of science, it is possible to design and manufacture new artefacts or develop existing ones in order to make them more competitive.
• In engineering sciences, the importance of a systemic approach, design skills and project competence must be taken into consideration.

School of Engineering
Science and engineering skills in an academic environment
Mission
The main tasks of the School of Engineering are
to renew technologies related to the technical industry
and the built environment through scientific
research, and to train broad-minded experts with a
comprehensive understanding of complex subjects.
The objectives are to create new knowledge and
information, and new solutions to serve the goals
of sustainable development.
Strengths
The strengths of the school include
application-oriented systems know-how and its
tradition of experimental research,
societal interaction and impact, and
expertise in engineering.
Strategic Aim
The strategic aim of Aalto University is
to attain world-class status as an
original unit. Following this strategy,
the School of Engineering has set
itself the goal of becoming an
international-level school of
engineering by the year 2020.
Research areas and themes• Multidisciplinary energy technologies: systems integration,
the energy use in buildings and energy issues related to transport systems.
• Making use of digitalization: applying information technology to the needs of society and industry.
• Computational modeling and systems thinking: modelling and simulation of various physical, technical and societal phenomena.
• Materials technology: applications of material technology.• Sustainable society: the economic and ecological solutions
in the built environment.
