“Halloween and Superheros”The leaves are starting to turn, football season is upon us and Halloween is right around the corner. As a child, Halloween was a great time to dress up as my favorite superhero or scary monster and parade about the neighborhood collecting as many appetite ruining goodies as I could

carry. For many years and with small modifi cations my Wonder Woman costume became one of my favorite Halloween costumes. Wonder Woman was one of those unmistakable characters that as a child gave me reason to believe that superheroes could do extraordinary things all at once. Not only was Wonder Woman fabulously accessorized but she was able to singlehandedly fi ght injustice while still keeping tabs on where she had parked the invisible airplane. Amazing! As an adult Halloween becomes memorable for other reasons especially when one realizes how much revenue is generated during this one holiday. In 2013, Forbes and the National Retail Federation reported that Americans spent a total of $6.9 Billion on Halloween. If those numbers aren’t sweet enough consider that $2 Billion was spent on candy last year alone. Costumes are reported to bring in $2.6 Billion annually, which is astounding but even more so was the number for pet costumes at $330 Million. Based on these staggering revenue numbers many retailers see Halloween as the start of the holiday shopping season. For that reason 83% of holiday marketing campaigns begin during the weeks leading up to Halloween and out of that percentage, 46% will be in some form of print advertising. If your business is looking for new ways to get your message out in print, The Albany Chamber of Commerce has some great ways to kick off your holiday marketing. Opportunities are available to purchase advertising in the monthly newsletter or insert a fl yer in that same publication reaching over 1300 Chamber members. If Business to

Business is your method of marketing, months are still available for your company to host a Greeters, Business after Hours or get your “Business in the Spotlight” because you referred a new member to the Chamber. The Chamber’s Member Directory also known as the “PowerBook” is now available to help you locate additional resources to help with marketing campaigns or a local retailer to begin your holiday shopping. Our members truly are our “Superheroes” and the Chamber knows that even superheroes need a hand sometimes and that is why we have the Governmental Affairs Committee. These volunteers represent a diverse group of industries who are currently in the midst of reviewing upcoming legislation that will have an impact on business. They take their responsibility seriously as the voice of business with local, county and state government. The Chamber through this committee continues to maintain a view that government should not hinder private industry job growth through unnecessary taxes or regulation. We cannot mention jobs without thinking about the Workforce Development Task Force at the Albany Chamber. The newest addition to this task force is Josefi ne Fleetwood. Josefi ne joined the Chamber team in September as the Workforce Development’s Program Director. She along with the rest of our industry and education superheroes are diligently working towards a stronger employable workforce. If you have not met Josephine yet please stop by and say hello. She can tell you all about Workforce Development and several ways that Chamber members can contribute to this vital program. Have a happy and productive October in the meantime I must fi nd where I parked my invisible plane and Lasso of Truth in time for Halloween.

Bessie Johnson has a fi rm understanding of the issues facing Albany and brings a thoughtful, balanced and knowledgeable voice to the City Council. With a diverse business background and an understanding of the pitfalls of bureaucracy, Bessie is able to work through tough issues and speaks well for the citizens of Albany. Committed to understanding all sides of an issue before she votes and not micromanaging City Hall, Bessie is the right voice to have on the Albany City Council representing Ward III. Oregon House of Representatives:District 15: Endorsement goes to incumbent Rep. Andy Olson. Andy Olson is known as a servant leader, someone you can trust and someone who gets things done. He has worked hard for all of his constituents over the years and will continue to bring his special leadership skills, knowledge and determination to do what is right for District 15 in the legislature. During the 2014 February Session, Rep. Olson focused on creating jobs, reforming state government and maintaining a fi scally-sustainable 2013-15 budget. She will work hard to help bring family-wage jobs to Linn and Benton Counties, is a supporter for improving educational opportunities for our children and will continue to work to safeguard our neighborhoods and vulnerable citizens. Vote for Sen. Betsy Close.

Good Government Council Endorses Pro Jobs Candidates

While many of you are still getting ready for work in the morning the Governmental Affairs Committee is meeting on Thursday mornings at 7 am to review, discuss and as necessary take positions on issues that affect your business. They recently met to review and take positions on two ballot measures of particular interest to the business community. Measure 91 - Voted to Oppose: This measure would allow for the possession, manufacture, sale of marijuana by/to adults, subject to state licensing, regulation, taxations(s). Legalized marijuana presents numerous health and safety concerns to the business community and general public. With no FDA regulations or controlled delivery/use in place for this Federally illegal gateway drug the legalization of recreational marijuana opens the door for serious consequences to fellow employees, employers, businesses, governments and general public.

Governmental Affairs Committee Takes “No” Positions on Two November Ballot Measures

Measure 92 – Voted to Oppose: This measure would mandate labeling of certain foodstuffs that contain genetically modifi ed organisms (GMO’s). The decision to label should rest with the Food and Drug Administration and USDA, which are set up to assess the safety of foods, not to political campaigns. Science does not support that GMO’s are unsafe and mandatory labels would mislead consumers into thinking that engineered ingredients are not safe. Those that seek GMO free food may already purchase food with organic labels. If food providers are interested in labeling their food with a GMO label they may do that now voluntarily.

The Albany Area Chamber asks you to Vote NO on Ballot measures 91 and 92.

I am very excited to be part of the Albany Chamber team and I look forward to partnering with our business leaders and educators to create a dynamic workforce development program in our community. Albany has a very supportive business environment that is ready and willing to engage with schools and wants to help build the emerging workforce. We are getting ready to launch a comprehensive marketing campaign and have started working with schools and businesses to coordinate career learning activities for students to show them the opportunities that are available. Work-based learning strengthens our educat ional programs and better prepares all of our students for the realities of our increasingly competitive and global job market. Publishing Policy:The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce welcomes input, ideas and suggestions from our members. As with any periodical, we must adhere to strict deadlines and we reserve the right to edit all materials submitted for publication. The Chamber cannot guarantee the validity or accuracy of the contents of paid advertisements. Questions or concerns about the content of The Chamber Network can be addressed to Janet Steele, 435 W First Ave, Albany, OR 97321.

Personal Background: I moved from North Eastern Oregon in 1992 to attend Oregon State University, where I graduated with a BS degree in Graphic Design and a minor in Marketing. For 15 years I worked for a web software company until I joined the Gerding family two years ago as their Business Development Manager.

Business Marketing Niche: Gerding Builders’ focus is on people and a commitment to the long-term relationships they have cultivated over their 47-year history. I have the pleasure of fostering those relationships and deepening that commitment to our community. My marketing approach is easy. Tell the truth. Gerding Builders is a quality General Contracting company, whose values are evident at every level of the company. Whether you speak to our accounting department, administrative personnel, project managers, or Tom Gerding, himself you will see strength of character and will be treated with the utmost respect.

Biggest Issue Facing Albany: I believe that Albany is doing a lot of things right! Their biggest issue is creating a business friendly atmosphere to enrich job opportunities and invite new industries, while maintaining a quality atmosphere that attracts residents. This is a challenge among many communities today and I see Albany taking positive steps in that direction.

Chamber Involvement: Gerding Builders has been a chamber member for many years and has particularly enjoyed participating in Chamber luncheons and After-hour events. Personally I enjoy inviting new members to accompany us to meetings so that they may explore networking possibilities.
