Message fromThe President of

The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations

1

This Awards Luncheon gives theBAAA family reason to celebrate a re-markably successful 2010 Track andField season which I describe as oneof the best..if not the best...since mytenure as President. While there weremany challenges, the most pressing ofwhich was being able to keep the As-sociation financially sound in an ex-tremely difficult economy, I amthankful along with my fellow col-leagues that the organization was suc-cessful in raising the fundingnecessary to ensure the work contin-ues. All national teams travelled with-out limitations.

We are experiencing significant growth in our pro-grams. Increasing numbers of new athletes are enter-ing the program annually. We can confidently say thatin 2011, for the first time, our youth and junior ath-letes took the spotlight on the world stage.

Nine national teams travelled to various regional andinternational competitions, over one hundred andseventy athletes were named to teams achieving morethan fifty medals. While our senior athletes achievedcredible performances, a number of our youth andjunior athletes blazed a trail and in the processachieved top five world rankings and ascended thepodium at IAAF competitions. This is encouragingand gives us a sense of satisfaction that as our seniorathletes transition out of their careers, a new genera-tion of athletes are preparing to step to the forefrontat the senior\elite level keeping the Bahamas presencestrong on the world stage of our beloved sport.

Many of our coaches are gaining higher-level certifi-cation to enhance their skills becoming more profi-cient in their coaching, taking their program to ahigher standard. They are to be commended for the job they are doingproducing, top world ranking youth and junior ath-letes with great performances. If we are to continue

to hold the respect and reputation thatwe have enjoyed as a dominant ath-letic powerhouse in the world, youmust remain disciplined and focusedapplying your expertise to produceworld-class podium athletes.

This 2011 Awards Luncheon is beingheld in honor of Elite Athlete ChrisBrown an "Exceptional Athlete" in-deed. He has carried the Bahamasbanner in the men's 400 meters forover a decade with passion and pride. He is certainly a model of success foraspiring athletes to emulate and hasbeen a great ambassador for the Ba-

hamas in this global arena.

To our athletes, I wish to express my sincere appreci-ation for the desire, dedication, determination anddiscipline you display. The Association is firmly be-hind you and endeavors to support you to the best ofits ability.

I wish also to express sincere thanks to the Ministryof Youth, Sports and Culture, our corporate sponsorsnamely BTC, Scotiabank, the FML Group of Com-panies, The Petty Group of Companies and the listof additional sponsors, individual and private donorswho continued to support our program even duringthese challenging economic times.

We enter 2012 with a busy schedule that will includethe perennial Carfta Games, the World Junior Cham-pionships and the London Olympic Games where,we will see a new generation of Bahamian athletesrepresenting their country.

On behalf of the Executives and Council Members Iwish all a Merry Christmas and ask that you keep theathletes and our program in your thoughts andprayers for a Joyous and prosperous New Year.

Mike Sands, President

ATHLETICS AND A COLLEGE EDUCATION

A Coach’s ViewBy: Coach Peter Pratt

Jumpers Inc.Founding Member & Recruiter: Parents Association of Track & Field Athletes

The year two thousand (2000) was

the beginning of a new millennium

and a new decade. Track & Field

coaches rededicated themselves to

ensuring that all top performing ac-

ademically eligible student athlete

in their clubs were the recipients of

athletic scholarships to attend universities/col-

leges in the USA, thereby positively changing the

lives of many student athletes, their families,

their communities and building a strong senior

track & field program for The Bahamas.

Under the guidance of businessman Mr. Harrison

R. Petty and Mrs. Donna Nicolls, The Parents As-

sociation of Track & Field Athletes was formed as

a scholarship search unit of the BAAA to ensure

the viability and continuity of the process.

Additionally, the past ten years, hundreds of stu-

dent athletes were recipients of athletic scholar-

ships to attend universities/colleges in the USA.

Today, it is evident that our coaches’ efforts lo-

cally, combined with the work of Bernard New-

bold of the Parents Association of Track & Field

Athletes and Coach Dwayne Jennings of Freeport

based “Search Bahamas “has had a great impact

on our senior program; as a result, there is an in-

creased number of Bahamian student athletes

competing and winning at the NJCAA, NAIA and

NCAA Championships. Many of these student

athletes progress and compete at the World

Championships, Olympic Games;

hence today there are a greater

number of professional track and

field athletes representing The Ba-

hamas.

It is now 2011 and the process con-

tinues. The Bahamas Association of Athletic As-

sociations (BAAA) has many active persons,

stakeholders and patrons that support its various

programs to ensure the success of the athletes.

There is a network of Bahamian Coaches, coach-

ing at US Colleges and Universities that are an

active part of The BAAA scholarship search pro-

gram such as Dominic Goodman at Dickinson

State University, Henry Rolle at Auburn University,

Rolando Green at Arkansas, Dennis Darling at

TCU, Norbett Elliott at Tennessee, Sterling Moss

at Loyola Chicago, Fritz Spence at Penn State Uni-

versity, Niketo Johnson at Missouri, Edrick Poitier

at North Carolina and recently George Cleare

has been appointed Assistant Coach at the Uni-

versity of Georgia.

This year we recognized sixteen student athletes

and others that were the recipients of athletic

scholarships to attend colleges and universities

in the USA with a combined value in excess of

one million five hundred thousand dollars

($1,500,000.00) over a four year period.

We are pleased to say that many of our student athletes upon graduation became school teachers

and Track Coaches who work in The Bahamas education system; while others are in various profes-

sions making a positive contribution to our community.

Furthermore, at our annual general meeting held in December 2011, Mrs. Laura Pratt-Charlton,

Treasurer reported that it will require seven hundred thousand dollars ($700,000.00) for national

teams to travel internationally and compete during 2012. This sum is small when compared to the

value of the international recognition the Bahamas receives when our athletes compete and the

contribution our organization make to youth development both academically and athletically.

It will take the financial support of the Government, Corporate Bahamas and the general public to

keep our growing programs alive as we strive to develop more productive, well educated and disci-

plined citizens.

PROPOSED PROGRAMBy: Corrington Maycock

No Kids Left Behind

In the past we have seen potential

super stars surface in the eyes of Track

& Field at the primary and junior school

level. After the High School Champi-

onships and Primary School Champi-

onships these student athletes vanish

never to be seen or heard from again.

Very few remain in the system and later

excel to make junior international teams

or establish a scholarship to university

or college.

No Kids Left Behind was designed to recognize

and locate student athletes in Track & Field with

inner city backgrounds to help further their ca-

reer. Concentration will be placed on athletes

under the age of 16 that needs to be directed in

the hope of sustaining yearly competition and

training. We want to eliminate student athletes

not knowing their talent and how much better

they can become with such an opportunity.

We hope to enter into schools during physical ed-

ucation classes, at house meets and at champi-

onship meets to scout potential athletes. After

evaluation, names will be placed in categories for

specialty events and club placement. Only regis-

tered clubs of the Bahamas Association of Ath-

letic Association will receive names of athletes

and their specialty.

All potential student athletes will receive a certi-

fied letter from the B.A.A.A’s. This letter will be ad-

dressed to the parent(s) or guardian of the

student breaking down their child’s abil-

ity and the details of this program. We

will urge parents to make it possible no

matter what to have their student ath-

lete register and remain in the program.

We will also go into their school and

speak to teachers and guidance coun-

selors for a history on the individual. We

will then determine what needs to be

done to keep this individual in our system and

make it possible to have them succeed on the

track and in the classroom.

A program of this magnitude must be financed

by a corporate sponsor or funded through a Gov-

ernment Grant. We do not have a school system

like Jamaica or other top Caribbean countries

that develop athletes in their program. We run a

club system that does well but can do 100% bet-

ter through numbers and talent. Having numbers

will introduce a better pooling system for interna-

tional teams at the junior level and more profes-

sional athletes in the near future. We will also

better the lives of many more kids through schol-

arship opportunities.

We have a team in place who is willing to make

this happen and clubs willing to benefit through
