Circulating Books:

To find circulating books on wide-ranging topics using your key words or ideas: Go to the Library’s homepage (http://library.kean.edu). Click Books, E-books, Video, & More to access the Kean Catalog. Scroll and type your key words in the search box underneath Find This: Click Search. Scroll down to view the search results list. Circulating titles are located in the Main

Collection on the second and third floors of the Library. Make note of the call number and status for any titles of interest.

Electronic DatabasesTo start using the Library’s electronic databases to search for articles on certain topics using your key words, go to the Kean University Library Homepage, http://library.kean.edu. Click Articles & More to access the Databases. The databases are organized in two different lists. In one list the databases are listed alphabetically, and in the other list the databases are listed by subject or format. Brief directions are provided on the next pages to help you navigate these electronic databases. [Note: When you are off-campus, you will be asked to enter your Kean Library Barcode after you click on a database name. Your Kean Library Barcode is located on the back of your Kean University photo ID card.]

ProQuest Research To search ProQuest Research Databases for scholarly articles using Databases your key terms:

Click the letter P on the Jump to menu. Click ProQuest Research Databases (ProQuest). Click the Advanced tab. Type your key terms in the boxes underneath Advanced

Search. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For example, type: registered nurse* and work* and satisf*

Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed.

Click Search. Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed. If

the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full Text link, a Text + Graphics link, a Full Text - PDF link, or a combination of theses links immediately below the item. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

E-mail the article you are viewing by clicking Email at the top left-hand side of your screen.

If full-text link options are not present and you are on-campus, click Find a copy, then click TOUR Full Text or Check for full text via Tour Resolver to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases. If off-campus, search for the journal in the Periodicals List.

EBSCOhost To search the EBSCOhost Research Databases for articles using

Research Databases your key terms: Click the letter E on the Jump to menu. Click EBSCOhost Research Databases. Click EBSCOhost Web.



Select Academic Search Premier, Alt HealthWatch, Biomedical Reference Collection: Comprehensive, CINAHL, CINAHL Select, CINAHL with Full Text, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Collection, Nursing & Allied Health Collection: Comprehensive, MEDLINE, Pre-CINAHL, PsycINFO, and/or PsycARTICLES.

Click Continue. Type your key terms in the search box labeled Find: Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, type: nursing round* and patient* and satisf*

Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals under the Limit your results heading.

Click Search. Result: The first 10 retrieved article titles will be displayed.

If the full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links immediately below the item: HTML Full Text, PDF Full Text, or Linked Full Text. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking E-mail located at the top of your screen.

If full-text link options are not present and you are on-campus, click the TOUR button to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases. If off-campus, search for the journal in the Periodicals List.

Health Sciences: A SAGE To search Health Sciences: A SAGE Full-Text Collection for scholarly

Click Full-Text PDF to view the full-text article. E-mail the article record by clicking View Record, then

clicking Save, Print, Email located on the top of your screen and proceed.

Click Search. Result: The first 200 article titles will be displayed. If the full-

text article is available online for a specific item, you will see a Full Text + Links link, a PDF link, or both immediately below the item. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

E-mail the full-text article you are viewing by clicking Abstract or Full Text + Links, then click E-mail Article located in the green box on the right-hand side of your screen.

Lastly, find full-text articles cited in the article by scrolling to the references section at the end of the article and clicking on Full Text + Links, PDF, or Full Text via CrossRef when provided.

JSTOR To search JSTOR for scholarly articles: Click the letter J on the Jump to menu. Click JSTOR. Click Search. Type your key terms in the search box. Use the “AND” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, try typing the following terms in the search box: culture shock* and nurs*

Click Search. Result: the first 25 retrieved citations will be displayed. Click

citation titles of interest to view the full-text articles. E-mail the article you are currently viewing by clicking Save

Citation located above the article image. Click View Saved Citations. Click Email citations, and from the Citation Format drop-down menu select printer-friendly instead of citation-manager. Click Export and proceed.

OmniFile Full Text Mega To search OmniFile Full Text Mega (WilsonWeb) for articles using your key terms:

Click the letter O on the Jump to menu. Click OmniFile Full Text Mega (WilsonWeb). Select General Science (GS) or Social Science (SS) instead of

If full-text link options are not present and you are on-campus, click the icon with the blue arrow to check the availability of full-text for the article in other Kean University Library databases. If off-campus, search for the journal in the Periodicals List.

Health Reference Center To search Health Reference Center Academic for scholarly articles

Academic using your key terms: Click the letter H on the Jump to menu. Click Health Reference Center Academic (Thomson GALE). The search form defaults to Subject guide search. Instead,

click Keyword search on the left-hand side of the screen to access a basic keyword search form.

Type your key terms in the search box underneath Click in the entry box and enter search term(s):

Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, type: culture shock* and nurs*

Limit your results to articles reviewed or judged by scholars in the field (in other words, scholarly or peer reviewed articles) by selecting refereed publications under the Limit the current search (optional) heading.

Click Search. Result: The retrieved article titles will be displayed. If the

full-text article is available online for a specific item, you will see one or more of the following links immediately below the item: Text or Text with graphics. Click one of these links to view the full-text article.

E-mail the full-text article you are viewing by clicking E-mail or Retrieval located on the left-hand side of your screen.

Ethnic NewsWatch To search Ethnic NewsWatch for scholarly articles using your key terms:

Click the letter E on the Jump to menu. Click Ethnic NewsWatch (ProQuest). Click English. Type your key terms in the box underneath Basic Search. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, type: african american and diabet*

Cochrane Library To search the Cochrane Library for evidence-based medical

information: Click the letter C on the Jump to menu. Click Cochrane Library (Wiley Interscience). Click Advanced Search on the right-hand side of the screen. Type your key terms in the first through fifth boxes

underneath Search For: Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For instance, type:First Search Box: cultural competenc* Second Search Box: patient*

In the scroll-down box to the right of each of the search boxes, select a field in which the database should search for your keywords. For instance, select Search All Text to search full-text documents (a very broad search) or select Title, Abstract, or Keywords for more focused searching.

Below the heading Restrict Search by Product (underneath the search boxes), either select All of The Cochrane Library or select one of the databases included within the Cochrane Library, such as The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (Cochrane Reviews), Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), or The Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews (Methodology Reviews).

Click Search. Result: Click Record to view a retrieved document record. Click PDF on the left-hand side of the screen to view the full-

text document. Select Save or Print from the Adobe Acrobat Reader toolbar to

save or print the document.

Dissertations& Theses: Full Text To search Dissertations & Theses: Full Text using your key terms:

Click the letter D on the Jump to menu. Click Dissertations & Theses: Full Text (ProQuest). Click the Advanced search tab. Type your key terms in the first, second, and/or third search

boxes. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

that contain all of the terms. Use the asterisk (*) as a truncation symbol to replace the ending of your key words and retrieve items with similar word roots. For example, type,

eHRAF To search eHRAF Collection of Ethnography for cultural information:

underneath the Exact word or phrase heading. Use the “and” operator to combine terms and retrieve items

Click Search on the top of your right-hand screen. Result: All results will be displayed on the retrieved screen.
