On March 12, 2019 twenty new members were inducted into the Andrews Academy, chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS), bringing the total membership to forty-one. This was the fifty-fourth annual NHS Induction Ceremony. Part of the service includes candle-lighting to representing the four pillars of the NHS Society: Scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Four members described the pillars of the NHS as they lit the can-dle. Following this there was a homily and then each inductee received a certificate of member-

ship.

Before spring break and again this Tuesday, seniors worked on important items to prepare for graduation and plan for college. Seniors did their parent tribute record-ing that will be viewed on Thursday night of graduation during class night. Seniors also individually met with An-drews University representatives to help in their applica-tion to Andrews University or to learn more about the application process for colleges in general. Also for the seniors who have already applied they learned how much scholarships they will be receiving. This ranges from $ 6000 to $ 14 000 a year they will be receiving while at AU. These scholarships are based on ACT/SAT scores and GPA. On Tuesday of this week they did more planning for graduation.

On March 8 Well over forty members of the class of 2019 enjoyed the afternoon and evening together at Ultra Camp in Niles. This was the class’ second to last class vespers and activity of their four years at AA. The afternoon began with rock climbing wall, foam pit, la-ser tag and more. After a few hours of playing every-one was ready to enjoy the pizza supper. Following supper our class pastor, Joshua, led in worship togeth-er. He divided the class into groups and had then act out a modern version of a Bible story. We thank Ultra Camp and the Ashley's for allowing our class to come and enjoy their facility for our activity and vespers together. We had a great time there. Please go to Facebook for many more photos

This week’s assembly was an important one for students as they prepare for next school year. The various diplomas and expectations were discussed, as well as a description of classes, so that students, parents, and advi-sors can start the process of making class selections for next school year. An explana-tion of what steps are needed to complete the reapplication process was also given. One important step that takes some plan-ning is for parents and students to make an appointment with our financial advisor to finalize your plan for next school year.

Improved Internet Service

A number of months ago, Andrews Academy applied for and received funding from a government program to im-prove internet services. A new fiber optic cable that will bring much better service is being installed this week. You may have noticed the many flags along the sidewalk of Garland Ave in front of AA. This is to show where other items are buried so that the new cable could be buried. Currently RMES gets their internet from AA, and AA gets its internet from Garland Apartments. There is great in-terdependency on each other. Now each building with have their own service and have much higher bandwidth. The grant paid the major portion ($76,000) for this new cable, while the school is paying the remaining portion ($3,300). We thank the AA board fi-nance committee as well as Ms. Gaytan for her careful financial planning and efforts to make this and other projects possible.

On Monday some of the students went to the commons to pray in small groups, while others stayed in the chapel to hear Pastor Glassford draw a lesson from nature… human nature. He began by showing a short video of someone who had 45 diamondback rattle snakes in the foundation of their home, at one point they had 88! This was their “giant” they were facing! Our theme for the year is, “The Lord is Greater than the Giants you face.” When we confront fear (like a snake) we either run away from or fight to kill the snake (the giant). He then retold the story of the bland man being healed at Bethsaida (Mark 8:22-26). Jesus took him by the hand and healed him and said to not go into the village but to go direct-ly home. He didn’t explain why but he gave enough evidence to trust Him and to follow His instruction. Likewise He gives us enough evidence to trust His instruction even if He doesn’t tell us why. Could it be that some of the giants we face we would not need to if we just went “home” and not to the “village”. Let’s follow God’s instruction, He has given us enough evidence to trust in Him. On Tuesday, guest speaker Gina Gordon spoke for chapel. She shared a brief testimony about how she wished someone had told her that at times, the giants in her life might seem bigger than God. High school was a smooth ride for her, but college just wasn’t the same. She was depressed in her sophomore year of college, and this caused her to cry out to God for help. God seemed silent to her, and she felt hopeless and desperate. From this experience, she learned that sometimes all we can do is wait on God. It took her 2 years to be relieved of her depression, and this was a result of just waiting on God to do His work. She stated that while we wait, we should allow God to give us strength. And when we wait, we must let God be our shield.

On Wednesday Kamaire Jones, AA freshmen, gave our devotional thought for the day. He talked about the importance of our words and actions and how it can affect us. The scripture reference was Proverbs 18:21 which states, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." which Kamaire used to illustrate how words can alter our lives. Blake Shelley helped out in a demonstration of hitting a piece of dry wall and seeing the impact the hammer (words) can do to our dry wall (lives). Social Media and Music are two things that can really be hurtful to our spiritual growth if wee do not use it to uplift God. Kamaire ended with the thought that words and actions can alter our lives, do not turn drugs or feelings to fill your void, let Jesus come into your life and fill your life with peace and meaning. For Thursday chapel Pastor Reeves shared a sledding story in which he almost lost his life to a truck that drove right above him. He reflected on this experience and he asked the students if they are glad that they don’t always get what they want? He wanted to win the sledding race but because someone was ahead of him, this person was able to stop the truck before pastor Reeves was killed. Pastor Reeves told the students that he doesn’t always let his son get what he wants. Instead, he lets him do the things that are good for him. We have a blurred perception of the difference between danger and safety. Just like the prodigal son, we don’t always know what is best for us. However, we will find reasons for the decisions that God makes and the reasons behind His ways. In the pursuit of freedom in this world you actually be-come a slave to this world! He concluded with a plea that each of us will heed the words of Proverbs 3: 5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” For more pictures from chapel please go to Facebook.
