Introduction
MILLDEN is situated in Glen Esk, the most easterly of the various beautifulAngus Glens, and is a magnificent Scottish sporting estate, extending toapproximately 7,801.11 Ha (19,276.54 acres). It is centred on anoutstanding 8 beat driven grouse moor, low ground pheasant andpartridge shoot as well as 8 miles of double bank fishing for salmon andsea trout on the River North Esk together with 3 let farms.
The Estate has been transformed over the past seven years since beingacquired by its present owners. The grouse moor has been returned to itsformer glory and now provides some of the best sport in Scotland. Themain Estate properties have been re-built and restored to an exceptionalstandard. They are centred on MILLDEN LODGE which sits in a beautifulelevated position overlooking its own policies, river and parkland. Nosporting estate has been offered for sale in Scotland in such a goodcondition for many years.
Situation
MILLDEN is situated approximately 7 miles from the thriving village ofEdzell. Located within Glen Esk, which is perhaps the most picturesqueand unspoilt of the pretty Angus glens, the access is via a public nothrough road which offers high levels of privacy and seclusion.
The area is well served by road and air, with the airports at Dundee andAberdeen both within an hour’s drive. There are railway stations atMontrose and Laurencekirk. Local services and amenities can be foundnearby at Brechin and Laurencekirk with the cities of Aberdeen andDundee providing wider and comprehensive amenities.
Home to an array of wildlife, the surrounding countryside is a dramaticand enchanting mix of rugged hill and glen to the north, with the richfertile arable farmland of Angus and the Mearns to the south and east.A short drive to the east lies the spectacular north east coastline, awonderful combination of stunning sandy beaches and towering cliffs.The result is an excellent setting for outdoor pursuits with walking, cyclingand riding all on hand. Golfers are very well provided for with the Linksat Carnoustie and St Andrews, both regular venues for the British Open,within comfortable driving distance along with a number of highly ratedlocal courses such as Edzell, Montrose and Alyth.
historical Note
MILLDEN is recognised historically as one of the great Scottish grousemoors where a record bag of 8,159 brace was achieved in 1931. It hasbeen described as “the Holy Grail” of grouse moors, capable of shootingin excess of 10 consecutive driven days. It lies in the heart of grouseshooting country bordering the famous Scottish moors of Gannochy,Hunthill and Glen Dye. In 1935, the September 7th edition of CountryLife commented that
“Millden offers some of the best grouse shooting inScotland. Not only are the Millden drives regarded as
some of the most sporting shooting to be found,demanding a high standard from the guns, but the
consistently good bags secured over a period of 15 yearsare evidence of the skilful management of the moors”.
MILLDEN saw a gradual decline in the number of the grouse shot in the1980’s and 90’s. However the current owner, who purchased the Estatein 2004, has instigated a comprehensive restoration programme toreverse this trend and has now returned this wonderful Estate to its formerglory.
Description
The current owner’s passion for MILLDEN has created perhaps one of thefinest sporting Estates in Scotland. Focus and investment has broughtabout a complete transformation of the Estate with 20 houses and variousother estate properties being renovated, the employment of 16 staff, themanagement of deer on the moor through new fencing, together with amassive programme of road improvement, new lines of butts and otherinfrastructure works which now present an Estate at the peak of itscondition.
The grouse moor management has not only seen a dramatic increase inthe number of grouse being presented to the guns, but has also benefiteda whole host of other birds and wildlife which has helped create a hugebio-diversity within the Estate. The 90 year average is 2,352 brace withthe 2010 bag 3,033 brace. The indications are that the 2011 bag willexceed this figure.
MILLDEN extends to a little under 20,000 acres and is bisected by theupper reaches of the renowned River North Esk, on which the Estate has8 miles of double bank fishing achieving an annual average catch overthe last 10 years of 67 salmon and 3 sea trout on the 40 named pools.The river has been very lightly fished in recent years and earlier catchrecords demonstrate catches of around 100 salmon, but certainly morewould have been caught with even modest fishing intensity. The NorthEsk has an excellent late run of salmon and it is not unusual for fish to becaught off the lawn of Millden Lodge following a good day’s shooting.
The shooting beats remain unchanged from the 1930’s with Black Moss,Modlach, Glen Tennet, Glen Catt and Home Beat all lying to the northside of the River North Esk, whilst Burn of Kettle, the Flats and the famousKnocks Beat are to the south. A massive programme of restoring existingbutts, together with the creation of new lines of butts, has revitalised agrouse moor capable of in excess of 10 consecutive days driven shooting.Shooting can be effectively managed in all winds.
The low ground shooting at Millden lies at the heart of the Estate usingthe North Esk valley and its tributaries to the best topographicaladvantage, providing high quality, testing partridges and pheasants.
The main residential properties on the Estate have been comprehensivelyrestored and renovated over the past seven years, and the Estate is nowable to provide first class accommodation, not only for the guests at thevarious lodges, but also the Estate tenants and employees.Approximately half of the land at Millden has vacant possession, whilstthe other half is occupied under three agricultural tenancies. The tenantshave worked with the Estate to modify stocking densities in order toimprove the grouse shooting and this mutually beneficial arrangementhas contributed to the significant success of the restoration of the grousemoor.

MILLDEN LODGE AND STAFF ACCOMMODATION. Millden Lodge is a substantial granite built 19th century shooting lodgethat will easily accommodate large parties with a very intimate andrelaxed atmosphere. The Lodge setting is spectacular, sitting above thenorth bank of the River North Esk, in the heart of Glen Esk andsurrounded by the heather clad Angus hills.
