Scenario As part of your preparation for Level 3, or to help you go out and set up a business after your Level 2 course, you will plan the set-up for a small business in your local area.

For this assignment you will use all the skills that you have learned through your BTEC Business work so far, including marketing, finance and legal aspects. You will also learn more about your own skills and areas for development.

Initially working in small groups, you will need to research a small business idea. Remember that a ‘small business’ is one that runs as a sole trader, partnership or private limited company. You will need to check your choice of business idea with your assessor before you start work on the assignment.

Some possible ideas that you might like to consider are:

● hairdresser/barber/nail bar

● courier/delivery service

● motor vehicle repair/improvements

● painting and decorating

● gardening.

You should try to be as original as possible. You will need to read through all the tasks before you make your final choice of business.

Although you will be working in small groups you must make sure at all times that you show how you have contributed to the tasks as an individual. Your tutor will provide individual observation records and feedback.

In this assignment you will have the opportunity to provide evidence towards the following criteria:

P1 present the initial business idea using relevant criteria

P2 explain how to identify the target market

M1 explain methods used to identify the target market for the proposed business

● What makes your business idea attractive?

● How will you balance your personal needs and the needs of the business?

● How profitable could the business be?

Task 2 Target market Prepare an information pack about your target market that can be given out at the end of the presentation to your potential investors. The ‘target market’ is the group of customers that you have decided to market your business to. Through your BTEC Business course you will have learned about the different ways that a market can be identified, for example categorising it by age, by the area people live in or by the hobbies that people have.

You must include in your pack a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis for your target market.

You must include research that you have collected about your target market, including:

● published research

● market research

● sales forecasts

● customer actions and choices

● effects on business and trends in this market

● competition

● environmental issues.

Guidance

Make sure you explain the methods that you have used to identify your chosen target market. ‘Explain’ means that you will include all the reasons why you chose your particular target market.
