Business etiquette is one of the things that, though we all may not have been thoroughly exposed to while growing up, we are sure to practice in the future. It also has a lot to do with your appearance, specifi- cally a person’s ability to find a well- tailored suit and wear it well. One of the key factors in assuring that a business suit will turns heads is to make sure that it fits properly. Suit jackets should fit close to the body; the sleeves should stop at the wrist bone and the bottom of the jacket should hit the top of the hip. A good jacket should also allow full body motion whether it is buttoned up or left open. Additionally, adhering to body type is another important fac- tor. For instance, taller males are en- couraged to stick to double-breasted suits, which will accentuate their sil- houette, while shorter males should go for single-breasted suits. The way that a suit is worn is just as important as the fit. The way that a suit jacket is buttoned is de- pendent on the number of buttons it has. With two-button jackets, only button the top button. With three- button jackets, use the “sometimes, always, never” rule: fasten the top button sometimes, always fasten the middle button, and never fasten the third. Suits with two buttons look the most modern, while suits with more than three buttons are usually dis- couraged. There are other smaller details that are extremely important, espe- cially when suits are worn almost daily. “Wool suits are great for the win- ter, especially when considering the warmth factor. Also worsted, tweed, herringbone and reliable cotton or cotton blends are good fabrics,” Jovani Trinidad an assistant man- ager at the Men’s Warehouse store in Prince George’s Plaza Mall, said. Color is also an important detail to think about when looking for a suit. Senior physics major Nicko- las Sneed said that students should “make sure, if in a professional set- ting, the suit is either grey, navy, black or brown. Wear a tie because a bow tie is not appropriate for in- terviews. The point is to show that you are suited and booted and are professional enough for the job.” Sneed, who lives in the District suggests Zara’s, K&G and also thrift store for suitable pieces. “You can always get a nice blazer and mix- and-match!” Sneed said. “Never be afraid to be creative.” by Aleia Woods Contributing Writer For the typical Howard Univer- sity male student, going to a new barbershop can be a challenging – and rewarding - experience. It is the barbershop that decides whether a student’s going to leave looking ra- zor sharp with a taper fade, or end up with a hair line similar to rapper Flo Rida. However, for the past eleven years Best Cuts Barbershop located on 2612 Georgia Avenue, NW across from the School of Business has made the transition for many male students very pleasant. Hair clippings, wave caps, and the usual filled seats make up the surroundings of this barbershop located on Georgia Avenue and for many serves as a home away from home. Yet despite the various success, it is the traditional barber shop feel- ing, filled with laughter, commen- tary, and diversity that really makes Best Cuts special: “people look for the quality, everyone is looking for that traditional barber shop feeling, and that’s why I prefer to stay the traditional route,” says Lindo. Sophomore journalism major Kwaku Osei-Bonsu is another faith- ful Best Cuts returning client. Like many freshman males, Osei-Bonsu looked for an establishment that was accessible, yet understood the needs of the individual, especially since he was not from the DC area. “They have people that are open to the Howard University community. The reason I’m still a customer is even though it’s a haircut that cost 20 dollars, it’s the level of professionalism, and they allow you to build a relationship with their barbers. It’s a place of quality.” Service and quality, Lindo says, are the two most important qualities of a successful business and are what he owes his success to.
